The trick for this is to make sure you have Chrome version 85.0.4183.109. Then the new "Default Browswer App" setting will appear in Settings > Chrome.

Firefox Focus is my number one browser of choice when came it iOS. Disposable history cookie and everything, pages load faster because no ads by default, and many more.

Also I can use Google search without my privacy tracked. Win win solution.

Apple made a change in iOS 14 and iPadOS 14 that enables third-party browsers and email clients to be used as default apps, meaning users who don't get on with Safari or Apple's native Mail app can choose an alternative and it will be opened automatically whenever the system requires it.

The latest version of Google Chrome now supports this ability, so anyone on iOS 14 can set Google's app as their default browser and it will be used to automatically open web page links that are tapped in other apps.

Note that these steps will only work if you have iOS 14 or iPadOS 14 installed.
  1. Download the latest version of Google Chrome from the App Store [Direct Link] or update the app if you already have it.
  2. Launch the Settings app.
  3. Scroll down and select Chrome.
  4. Tap Default Browser App.
  5. Tap Chrome.

After you've completed these steps, any app that tries to open a web page will launch Chrome instead of Safari. To change this behavior, simply repeat the steps and select Safari in the Default Browser Apps screen.

As of writing, no other third-party web browser provides an option to set it as the default browser for the iOS, but give it some time and the option will surely arrive for Firefox, Opera, and others.

Apple is expected to release iOS 14 and iPadOS 14 for all users later this month, and we could even see them announced next week at Apple's "Time Flies" event on Tuesday, September 15, where it is expected to announce the Apple Watch Series 6 and new iPads.

It's nice that this is possible, but I'll stick to Safari 🤷‍♂️

Btw Chrome on iOS still uses WebKit, so it's basically Safari hooked to Google 😅

Firefox has a nice ethos behind it, but technically it starts falling behind other browsers using the Chromium engine (Safari, Edge, Chrome). A simple example is watching a high-definition video in your browser. Safari and Edge support it much better, while Firefox has buffering issues.

Great news. Now we just need Apple to allow developers to use their own engine since all browsers right now are basically safari wrappers. Maybe google should sue Apple. :p

It appears Apple is doing anything it can to say , 'what monopoly?' Good they learned from Microsoft's mistake.

Being forced to use the underlying safari engine + needing approval to use this feature + not supporting modern web technologies like PWA + not making this available for music applications say otherwise.

That said I use safari as default and wont switch because it is a good browser, has content blockers, battery friendly etc.

Just LOL. "Apple give us choices for default apps" for YEARS. They do so. Oh why would I want to use Chrome, Google sucks (while using Gmail, Youtube and other Google services anyway 🤦‍♂️ oh the hypocrisy)

So you just came here solely to bash Google because they were first to turn ths feature on? Want and demand choice, but then wouldnt use anything but stock, got it....

Well I didn't say it was the perfect solution :) but you have to admit it IS a step forward in the play nice with others concern, maybe a small step, but a step none the less.

And yep, I use safari as the default as well. tried the others. didnt really see what the big deal was.

It depends what you use on dekstop. Chrome lets you sync your bookmark and open tabs (sort of like a Safari continuity feature)

Sure you use the icloud extension on desktop, and it seems to be running ok for me, but in the past it was EXTREMELY buggy creating doubles of bookmarks. Open tabs there is no solution though.

Apple doesnt care about PC users and Safari on Windows isnt a thing anymore. Id assume there are a LOT of PC users who want their bookmarks on their phone without the icloud apps and extension hoops; considering Chome is 69.13% of the market. Even Edge is 7.23% now, Safari is way down there are 3.69%. Chrome, Firefox, and Edge are 84% of the browser market

Yes. I like that we have the choice now. I've been wanting to change my default email client for a long time.

Keen to switch my default browser to edge. Use it as the main browser on PC so the integration will be useful. Hopefully they update soon.
