Does she have multiple iCloud accounts set up on her phone?
No. Finally after 4 long hours with different Apple support people they decided to remove my wife from the family account and add her again. It first didn't change anything and they escalated my case to a supervisor and scheduled a call. After a couple hours, miraculously her phone recognized Apple Music.

We all love Craig Federighi but apart from his charisma, does he actually foster a culture where details matter? Apparently not. Apple’s software quality has never been great but it’s getting to the point of being ridiculous.
Not sure how long you've been using apple products, but certainly on the Mac things were pretty good in the past, but the attention to detail seems to be slipping recently, I'll give you that.. I think Apple is a victim of it's own success. Steve Jobs was famous for hiring 'A list' people, people at the very best of their trades/craft, but Apples frankly stupendous growth over the last decades, must have meant that not everyone currently employed is of that standard so things start to get sloppy...

You still live in the past, right? Cause your statment is about as much valid as any usp coming from apple these days.

Try harder at being funny.
I think you're the one living in the past or you're literally just not following what's going on with Microsoft. The last several big Windows updates have done some pretty epicly bad things, like wiping people's entire hard drives. That's why I made the joke ... Apple seems to be copying Microsoft's accidental deleting of things with an update. My statement is completely valid, it isn't my fault you have no idea what's going on with Windows these days.

This could be a classic case of the phenomenon: "Rosy retrospection." However, I'm leaning towards the camp of "worst iOS release ever."
Is this that your assessment of things or a rebuttal to my statement? I’m quite sure I wasn’t that hyperbolic.

Νotability also has a persistent bug related to iCloud. Some users have their notes deleted if they enable iCloud sync. The problem never happened if you backup the data manually, though.

Yes, but they weren’t this bad. I don’t recall a time when people discovered multiple bugs every day for 10 days straight and counting.
Yes it’s literally that bad when a macOS is so buggy it absolutely cannot be used. Plus. I’m having zero issues and neither is all my family on iOS 15.

So, this is very interesting. I just tried to reproduce this bug again. I'm still on iOS 15.1 beta 2, which exhibited the bug on Wednesday.

I was not able to reproduce the bug; the photo stayed in my library upon doing the iCloud Backup. It DID however lose the name of the person who sent it to me!

I think this bug has been fixed, SERVER side. After all, the photo would be deleted from iCloud, so that's where the deletion was likely happening.

In other words, this bug is probably now fixed, for everyone. It would be good for a few other people on other iOS 15 versions to test before declaring it certain though.

I tested. Seems to be fixed for me as well. Maybe a few more tests?

Glad I didn't "upgrade".

I mean, this bug wouldn't affect me anyway, because I virtually never delete messages threads and I would absolutely NEVER back up my phone to iCloud, but it's still inexcusably sloppy and indicative of Apple's general software quality these days.

(Typing this message on my 2012 MacBook Pro running 10.14, because I still use 32-bit software and I'm probably keeping this Mac on 10.14 forever even though I could easily install 11 on it despite it being 'unsupported'.)

A serious bug in the iOS 15 Messages app can cause some saved photos to be deleted, according to multiple complaints we've heard from MacRumors readers and Twitter users.

iOs-15-Photos-Feature.jpg

If you save a photo from a Messages thread and then go on to delete that thread, the next time an iCloud Backup is performed, the photo will disappear.

Even though the image is saved to your personal iCloud Photo Library, it appears to still be linked to the Messages app in iOS 15, and saving it does not persist through the deletion of the thread and an iCloud backup.

To replicate this bug, the following steps must be taken:
  1. Save a photo from a Messages conversation to your Camera Roll.
  2. Check to see that the photo has been saved.
  3. Delete the Messages conversation the photo came from. The photo will still be in your iCloud Photo Library at this point.
  4. Perform an iCloud Backup, and the photo disappears.
This is a concern because most users keep the iCloud Backup feature enabled and it's something that happens automatically. If you're someone who regularly deletes message threads, if there's a photo that you want to keep, you won't be able to keep it with iCloud Backup turned on. We tested this bug on an iPhone running iOS 15.1 beta 2 and had our photo deleted after deleting the Messages thread and performing an iCloud Backup, so the issue has not been addressed in the current beta as of yet.

Until this bug is fixed, if you've downloaded photos from the Messages app, you'll want to make sure to keep those Messages conversations and not delete them to prevent them from being automatically removed from your devices.

(Thanks, Chad!)

Q please: once the photos have been imported into the Mac Photos app, will they remain there despite this bug, or will they disappear from there also?
Thanks!

Note - not deleting message threads isn't enough safeguard - I never delete a thread, but I have had several key ones disappear on their own over the past 18 months with no explanation. (If anyone knows the why and how to avoid that happening again, I'd be grateful for that answer too!)

This relative neophyte thanks y'all!

Without reverse engineering, I would guess the new “Shared with you” feature was implemented by storing received message photos in the photo library rather than in the message database. What is probably broken is save to photo library (it is already in the photos library). So when deleting a message thread all the photos are marked for deletion without excluding ones that the user manually chose to save to library. They’ll need to make the save to photos create a duplicate that is not connected to the messages thread. Or maybe they already make a duplicate but forgot to remove the message meta data.

Whoa. I just noticed that now that you pointed it out. I literally was using less than half of my 256gb on my 12 pro max, to the point where I almost downgraded but then decided to keep it at 256gb. According to my iPhone right now, I only have 25gb of free space. What??? How is that even remotely possible. Something is screwy somewhere.
I have been dealing with a weird upgrade from my 12 Pro 256 to my 13 Pro 256 (iUP).
I did the device-to-device transfer, my 13 has ~229/256 GB remaining. On the 12, I had about ~185/256. So that 50 GB delta ha due curious. In digging, it appeared the Messages data on my 12 was ~15GB. On the 13, it was ~44 GB. WTF?
Several calls with Apple support yielded my next step: Reset and restore from my last 12 backup (something I look to get to tomorrow. ANYWAY...
Yesterday, I was saving some images from Messages on my 13, and they were no showing up in my Photos. So I ended up sending them to myself via email. Which is to say, I am seeing some issue with Messages and images, for sure.

Edit: meant to add... One Apple support rep told me "that's just how the 13 allocates memory now." Ummm, what???
Also, had I known, I would have preordered a 512. On my 12 Pro, 256 was just fine.

Edit #2: this camera bump is HUGE! The lenses protrude shockingly far. My Apple silicon case helps, a lot. But naked... Insane.
As an update...
I did NOT Reset to factory then Restore from my last 12 Pro Backup. I've simply let it ride a few days to see if there was any change. As I watched it climb to a usage high of ~232/256 GB, it has started to reduce. Currently, I'm at 202/256 - which is the lowest I have seen on my 13 Pro. I'm going to give it a few more days to see where it settles, hoping to get as close to that original 185/256 as possible - knowing I have added new photos, Messages and other data since upgrading.

I forget who, but one forum member said to keep my 13 Pro plugged in and locked as much as possible. That in about 2 weeks, it would regulate - aka: get back down to closer to where I was expecting. Looks like he may be correct. Regardless, what a weird experience. I do think next cycle, I'm moving from 256 to 512 - at least.

Onedrive is a syncing system, not really billed as backup. If one or more photos are deleted or damaged locally, aren't they deleted in Onedrive, too?
nope, oneDrive will backup photos. So if you delete the photo from your phone it still on OneDrive ... you can also restore all your photos back to your iOS device if needed. The only sync'ing that happens is when OneDrive checks your photo folder to make sure all the latest photos have been copied over.
