new update did not fix problem. just turned on phone, immediately asked if I wanted to sign in--and I am already signed in.

Yeah delayed
VERY annoying that the update is currently only available OTA. Never allow Apple to do delta updates... the chance of it screwing up is exponentially higher. But I made two different backups I trust (with iMazing), and one I don't (with iCloud), so we'll see whether it fscks up.

Never done it any other way since OTA became a thing. No issues ever.

Getting annoyed that they keep not releasing the IPSW update with the OTA update. I try to do Finder/iTunes IPSW updates for every update, or at the very least for the bigger updates (16.1 vs 16.0.3). I never really get bugs that some people seem to frequently get.

Apple is barely capable of spinning an OS that installs correctly. The idea of allowing them to do delta updates before the SSV was bad enough, but now...

iOS 16 was the buggiest iOS I've used so far, I'm not crying to switch to Android any time soon but I really think they need to like chill and slow down. I'm only on the 16 because it came with my new phone, had I not upgraded I would definitely not upgrade, I don't even know what's supposed to be new other than the much more complicated and not very useful Lock Screen.

Maybe just like go back to how it was before, big change every other year, for hardware and software. While you could say yes you can choose not to upgrade, but I didn't have a choice because it came on the new phone. Where as if they just took more time with the big updates, maybe the phone wouldn't be so buggy on launch?

I mean can't make calls during CarPlay are you serious? This is what the iPhone has come to? I get the iPhone for reliability and I couldn't even make my call the other day because the other end couldn't hear me. Other than that I can't even count how many times NATIVE apps have crashed on me. The maps on CarPlay crashes all the time as soon as I touch the phone, and it won't even connect properly half the time. And Airdrop, my god has it been a dumpster fire, before it worked like 90% of the time where the 10% was still annoying because it's a blackbox with no buttons or settings. Now it only works like 20% of the time, the other 80% it's just "waiting" forever, no diagnostics, no buttons to flip, so bad...

Why do so many people in this thread think there’s a difference between an OTA and an iTunes install? You think the software on your device at the end of the day would be any different?

Would love to hand them a mystery iPhone and have them guess how the last 6 updates were applied, all OTA or all iTunes.

I think you nailed it. To be honest I think it would be great if Apple just did smaller releases throughout the year, adding new features bit by bit as they’re ready.

Every year we have to ditch our stable old OS for a new buggy version which simply sucks. Oh well.

I regret upgrading it on my Se2. I wish I could go back.

Except you don't.

I made the choice to upgrade my phone this year (12 to 14), so I'm stuck with running iOS 16, even though I certainly know better than to *ever* run a .0 of *anything*. But otherwise, iOS 15 would be the order of the day.

I shouldn't have bothered with upgrading, I should have just replaced the battery in the existing phone like I originally indended. Seduced by the shiny.

There's no reason to trust that there wouldn't be and no reason to not just do a full install. I'll just wait until Apple gets their act together.

There is no difference, of course :) The OS is kept on a separate partition and whether you OTA or do a full replacement, you end up with exactly the same content on that partition. But hey, if it gives people a warm, fuzzy feeling, then fine!

Can someone check settings/iPhone storage and system data at the bottom of the list - mine is circling till infinity and this happened after 16.0.3 on 14 Pro?

There is difference. The ”Other“ Storage will increase dramatically when you do OTA. I think a lot of people don’t know that. OTA updates uses Other Storage to temporary backup your important settings and create temp file. iOS should have purge those temp files after update, but most of the time, it does not and it just accumulates. The bigger your number of files, the higher the Other storage accumulation.

when you do full iOS update, the backup goes to your mac. the temp files are created in your mac and not in the iOS memory. It decompresses the ios file in your macbook then transfer it to your ios partition. So the Other Storage will not dramatically increase.

it’s one of the reason i prefer doing full ios update. Also, i had bad experience updating my ipad pro 1Tb with OTA. so never doing OTA again if full update is available.

What about after an OTA you do afull reset from your device? Does the other storage go away?

Just had a weird bug on iMessage. I went into a conversion > details to delete some attachments and suddenly the complete conversion was deleted (just gone). I went to my Mac to write the same person again and thankfully the whole conversation re-appeared on my iPhone as well.

Very different experience for me. The only issues with an OS installation was back in the dark ages when you had to use iTunes. Once that was no longer necessary I’ve had no issues on any device - almost every iPhone since the original, multiple iPads, Apple TV, multiple watches. And since watchOS can only be installed OTA you don’t have a choice but the only issues I’ve seen that aren’t common to most everyone are those on beta software.

Mine loads up straight away.
