What version is your phone running? If you were running beta RC2 then you are up to date. RC2 and final were the same.

Didn’t install any of the 16.5 betas. I never even installed any versions of 16.3 or 16.4 so I’m pretty far behind. iTunes insists my software is up to date though.

Is Screen Time still not syncing properly for anyone else in 16.5?

I had turned off Screen Time entirely back in March as it was horribly broken. I turned it back on after upgrading to 16.5 yesterday. Not only is the time not syncing between the devices, but the settings aren’t either and that was something that was explicitly listed as fixed in 16.5.

So I decided to call “Apple Support” and an advisor told me he talked to a senior advisory and was told that ScreenTime settings don’t sync between devices as Apple hasn’t added that feature.

Really.
  • Fixes an issue where Screen Time settings may reset or not sync across all devices

Apple Support are idiots.

Go to Settings>General>About, what does IOS Version say?

Still not working correctly for me. My iPhone sees my iMac, but the iMac doesn't show my iPhone as a separate device even though it does with my iPad. But then it does show the cumulative data. It's just completely half-arsed as is Apple's style these days #toApple

Did anyone say battery life?

It seems like, according the battery test made by the great iAppleBytes, there are improvements, but it doesn’t get as good results as iOS 16.3 (for the A15).

Here is the video:

When I turned things off back in March, my phone could see my iPad but not vice-versa. Now it’s not syncing at all. I don’t even see my other devices listed under ScreenTime.

Worse now, the settings don’t sync. If I turn downtime on one device it doesn’t turn on anywhere else. That used to work a few months ago.

Did the Iphone 14PM notification bug get fixed ? You know the one whereby notification tones are extremely loud when on a phone call using the phones earpiece.

You can always ignore what iTunes is telling you, and download the 16.5 IPSW itself. then you can tell what iTunes is telling you to get stuffed by holding down the Option key (Mac) or Shift key (Windows) while clicking on update, and selecting the IPSW file. I've been doing that since iOS 3.x and works every time.

What button do you press on iTunes? Update or restore?

When you download the IPSW file, you should hit Update, if you plan on keeping your phone in its current state and update the OS. If you want to restore to the new OS, you could do that by hitting restore The caveat here is that if you hit restore to restore to the new OS, to get your data back, you would need a backup of your phone to do that.

Short story: play it safe, and hit update in iTunes.

I’m still on 16.2, so definitely not the latest version!

Yeah, I figured a manual shift-update with the IPSW should do the trick just fine… my point is though that I shouldn’t have to resort to such tricks. Whatever happened to “It just works”?

It’s experiences like these that remind me the apple magic of yore is very much absent from whatever they’re offering customers in 2023

It does work; however, not every device needs to phone home immediately, unless we all want to DOS Apple's update servers. That's what happens when everyone jumps immediately to update, causing longer download speeds. Even with their servers being distributed, customers outnumber the servers, and all of us hitting them at once will cause longer updates due to slower transfer speeds.

So the more staggered, the faster.

I haven’t seen anything to suggest that Apple staggers the release of iOS updates up to this point. While it’s possible I missed something or this is a new policy, it seems more probable to me that this is just their software not functioning as it’s intended to. At the very least, even if this is intentional by design, stating that my phone is up to date or running the latest software is patently false, when there have been at least 3 public iOS releases since my previous update.

I keep getting an exclamation mark on the Messages icon since updating to iOS 16.5.

Opening the app clears it. There are no unsent messages or errors as far as I can see.

Found a new bug in 16.5 - when viewing a video in the camera roll and you press the blue button at the bottom of the screen to unmute the sound, this resets when switching to a different video and the audio is muted again. This behavior is unlike previous versions of iOS 16 where it would remain un-muted from one video to the next. This makes browsing my spank bank significantly more inconvenient, I can’t imagine this was a deliberate change
