It's funny how many people have missed the point of this update - it's a bug fix update, not a feature update. The wallpapers are just another addition, and because people complain if the release notes don't have enough detail in them.

I think people get the point of the update, they just get annoyed that Apple is adding wallpapers like its some hard to come by item that they can't get unless Apple releases them to us.

They didn't list the new bugs. Those are features. Festures to make you want to upgrade to iOS 17. And, if you need a new phone to do that, Apple offers it's sincerest apology.

The Weather Widget is still not fixed.
  • The widget is reporting: Thunderstorm ⛈️
  • When you open the weather app, it’s reporting: Mostly Sunny. 🌤️
Which one is correct? Frustrating and unreliable! At least iOS 16.5 got the temperature right. 🤦🏻‍♀️

This why it is best to get the report by, for example, looking out the window …😀

I still don't think I understand how to use the Wallpapers on IOS. I want to change the wallpaper and it gives me an entirely new home screen where I have to place the widgets again. I'm kinda getting frustrated by it.

Long press and select customize, then when it splits into lock and home screen select which one you want to change. You can then hit the little picture icon in the lower left to select a new background.

If you scroll to the right and hit +, that’s why it’s creating a new lock screen. Apple is thinking of them like watch faces on the watch where you would have several set up with different widgets and activate them with a focus mode.

As usual with Siri, Apple giveth and then Apple taketh away.
So they’re not even there? That’s the entire reason I wanted this update in the first place. Why the f would they remove this? What’s the last 16.5 beta that still has this feature?

I'm pretty sure there are small improvements that were not listed. For example, previously when you have a Live photo and you tap-hold the subject it will lift it from the background and not play the Live photo. Now it actually plays the Live photo as longs as you don't drag it.

Where I live, you can have a half mile wide tornado with 300+ MPH winds and have it be a bright sunshiny day, both at the same time. My hometown got big swaths erased by such on more than one occasion.

Sorry, I don’t know. But it’s the one I wanted, too.

HomeKit just improved for me after I started installing the iOS 16.4 betas and was promoted to update our underlying Home infrastructure.

HomeKit compatible Meross smart plugs that never worked reliably in the Home app but worked well in the Meross app suddenly started working perfectly without delay in both.

Previously I’d have to delete and re-add them to the Home app every couple of weeks, they’d start responding slowly and not properly updating their status in the Home app then they’d stop responding to it at all and only function in the Meross app.

Since the update they work every time and I’ve moved my automations from the Meross app back into the Home app with the automations for my other lights and things work without a hitch. I’ll hang onto the app just for firmware updates since I’m not sure if they self update when using them through the Home app or not.

I also just got a Nest thermostat free from our local power company. I had it installed two days ago and now that the device supports Matter and the Google Home iOS app has been updated to allow you to generate a code to add the thermostat to Home via Matter I’ve been able to generate the code in the Google Home app and add the device to the Apple Home app allowing my wife and I to finally control every smart item we have except for the garage door opener from within the Home app.

Being able to open the garage door with an app was a nice surprise. The garage door that came with the home failed so they put in a new one and it just happens to support WiFi with an app that lets you open or close the door from it. So it was a nice plus but not why I bought it and not something I really use once the novelty wore off since opening the door from the pad only takes a few seconds. It’s open by the time I hop in the car and get buckled up.
Just a small point, but I don't trust internet enabled locks or doors. It's a dangerous technology, even if the programmers know what they are doing and in reality, much of the code is rubbish. Even if the programmers are good, they can be using compromised libraries. If the code is found to have a serious exploit two years later, there is no expectation that it will be fixed. You will be lucky if you find out about it.

This is what’s new… Spotlight search failed on me after updating.

The keyboard disappeared, spotlight search bar moved to the middle. iPhone froze.

I'll never understand why they made the default for wallpaper pair, the home screen, to be blurred. I hate them blurred.

The default should be normal, and you should have to tap on Blur if you want it blurred.

It’s me or the AOD turns off randomly (don’t stay on)? Never happened with the past updates!

More like they get annoyed for the sake of being annoyed. Apple supporting social causes does nothing to change the experience of using their device or services.

Try doing it from the lock screen.

Long press on the lock screen > scroll left > Add New

so…. Wallpaper and a tab on an app?
Remember we are on the long tail of the feature-curve. The Age of Innovation is behind us.
That low hanging fruits allowing us grown-ups to position icons and widget freely on the Home Screen? - meh, humbug!
