This must be a new thing?
I used to install IPSWs on my iPod touch all the time in my Windows XP/Windows 7 days. Lots of jail breaks too.
The issue is that in order to install beta software via IPSW, you need components from Xcode. Xcode is the development environment required to create iOS apps, and it only runs on macOS. Since there is no equivalent component for the Windows environment, and the iOS 16 Xcode itself is beta software, the current version of iTunes does not yet support beta iOS releases.

I can't say it's "a new thing", as it's been the case for several years, at least. Once iOS 16 is released (in September), iTunes will be updated to support iOS 16, and Bob's your uncle.

I don't think we have to wait until September, because there is not only iTunes to install iOS on windows. 3utools for example does not let me install iOS 16, but not because it is incompatible, but because Apple is not signing this version and does not allow the update. That's why I think that with the public beta, apple will start to sign this version and I suppose that itunes will also be updated soon, because ordinary users enter this beta and it doesn't make sense for itunes to be updated in September. But hey, even if it's not updated, having 3utools or imazing, it's not really a drama haha

There may be other ways (3utools or imazing, etc), but the official Apple-supported process will not happen until iTunes is updated. I don't recall whether Apple releases a beta version of iTunes some time during the beta cycle...

As far as Apple is concerned, to run the developer beta, you most likely have a Mac, because as a developer for iOS, you must use Mac-only Xcode... and then you can install the beta versions of iOS via OTA or IPSW (with the beta Xcode).

To run the public beta software, either Mac or Windows, you are expected to use the OTA because there is no official way to install the IPSW version without developer tools on a Mac.

I did a calculation via spotlight a week ago and it’s stuck there now. Even after swipe removing it. Just a random little bug 🙂

Apple does not pay almost any attention to itunes. They spent almost a month with a version that did not start on operating systems that were not in English. recently with a version that if you had an unlock code the update failed, and so on continuously. Apple I think is aware that most people on windows don't use itunes for anything other than installing drivers, because in operation it's light years away from finder on Mac or any of the other tools. And it doesn't seem like Apple has any interest in changing this anytime soon.
Regarding the public betas, as far as I remember I think they post the IPSW file, so there has to be some installation method accessible to everyone, both for Mac and Windows. The good thing about this is that shortly, in two or three weeks, the public beta will be launched and there we will be able to see if Windows users can open up a possibility or not hehe
With Apple signing the beta, for me it would be more than enough, but we'll see what happens.

I'm curious about the FaceTime Handoff feature.

I like the idea of being able to move calls back and forth between devices, but I'm wondering if that includes regular phone calls (ie continuity phone calls). I often take phone calls on my iPad and Mac and would love to be able to transfer them between devices, but the description they gave isn't clear as to whether regular phone calls would work with this - it just says "FaceTime calls" or something like that on the website. Although, I don't see why regular phone calls wouldn't work any differently than any old FaceTime call.
They’ve been there for years. On an iPhone, open the multitasking/app switcher view and look at the bottom for the call in progress from another device, on others, it’s often at the end of the dock for handoff. Make sure you have handoff and Bluetooth turned on, you may need Wifi calling on as well. I live with Wifi calling on, as I’ve lived in weak cell areas most of my life.

I don't usually have bluetooth on, so this could be a bug from before iOS 16, but ...

Continuity tells me on my phone "Safari: From macbook" and when I open it, it goes to the page I'm looking at on my laptop. No surprises there, right? Except I never, really never, use Safari on my laptop (it's in private browsing mode and no tabs are open) and the tab Safari mobile then opens to is the one I'm using here, in Firefox. ♫ Twighlight Zone ♫
I believe it shares the protocol. I use Firefox on my Mac (need containers) and Safari on my iPad. They seemlessly open each other when I share a page, using Safari on iPad with Firefox views and Firefox on Mac for iPad views.

Kind of like the reinstall "paves over" the problem areas?
It‘s probably upgrade script errors failing on the first run (OTA or IPSW) and not failing on the second (IPSW). These scripts already likely upgrading preference files and other settings and may have *bugs* in them that are exposed on the first run, or needed to be done in a different order, and are partially done after the first run and completely done after the second.

I‘m guessing more people do OTA than IPSW, skewing the perception that OTA is somehow flawed, when it’s likely the bug is more exposed by more people hitting it. I’ve been doing OTA with little ill effects for years, but YMMV.

I think it’s asking a bit much to expect the upgrade from previous OS to new OS to be buttery smoot in DB1. This is the crowd sourcing of fixing upgrade bugs. This is what the betas are for.

Interesting read, thanks for this. Certainly could be. This is what we've found though. 👍🏼

for me, Safari is the biggest battery hog despite being used the least amount of time.
I’m a dev, but dont have a sacrificial device at the moment.

  1. Does the barometric pressure also give a past/future graph?
yes, seven day estimate

I just noticed Halide raw is broken at least with my 13 PM on iOS 16 beta 1. The images do not capture correctly at all, completely unusable. Anyone else encounter this?

Can you do that between, say, an iMac and an iPad? So if I take a continuity phone call on my iPad, can I transfer it around to other devices?

Big pet peeve: This isn't as much of a problem on this forum as it used to be, but I still see it on Twitter. When someone posts a bug and people respond "iTs A bEtA". Yeah no kidding. The whole point is to bring awareness to the bugs. Yeah I report it myself, but if I post it to a public forum, maybe others will as well and it'll get fixed quicker.
