They may be focused on the VR headset but we're still waiting for the Apple savings account, Apple Pay Later and Apple Music Classical app. I'd expect at least one of those in 16.4.
I believe VR headset is gonna be a spectacular failure. It will be drummed up by your regular youtube fairy influencers as “the next best thing”. In the end, it will be a colossal wastage of resources and manpower which would have otherwise helped to better build iOS and iPadOS.

Agreed! The biggest factor will be the overly expensive price. Niche Market!

I wish Apple really hard worked on bettering the current software iOS, Watch OS, Mac OS & iPad OS instead. All the research time could have been used as a re-designed factor. iOS has virtually had the same design since iOS 7. The macOS app icons don't really match up with the current iOS either.

You both probably also chalked up the iPad as a “Big iPhone”.

I am a bit skeptical, but I have learned over the years that Apple’s deliberative approach to product development has yielded devices that others have attempted but did not succeed. Both iPad and Apple Watch are good examples. Time will tell but it is best not to bet against Apple.

Apple has a pretty good track record of making niche categories popular.

MP3 Players were available before iPod, but Apple changed the game despite their pricier entry
iPhone flipped the entire cellphone industry on its head.
iPad was "just a big iPhone" until it became the icon of an entire category.
Airpods were laughed at for their design and price, but today wireless earbuds are everywhere and Airpods still is one of the best options.

But... then there's
AirPods Max
HomePod Gen 1
Trashcan Mac Pro
Apple Watch Edition

Apple is really good at expensive products for the masses, but really bad at luxury products for the 1%. It all depends on where Apple's rumored headset falls on that spectrum I think.

Oh, I agree it’s not a slam dunk. However, their track record is largely positive, and I have heard numerous times about how they can’t possibly make a product category work, and then they end up dominating.

The key here is making an affordable product with a compelling use case. I don’t think that they are just going to try to replicate the oculus rift. I have no idea what that compelling use case will be, but I don’t get paid for that, they do! From Tim Cook’s statements over the years. It appears they are betting the farm on this line of business, so I find it hard to believe that they would mess it up entirely. But weirder things have happened.

Good morning! Happy Thursday,

A New Day means a New Opportunity. 95% sure iOS 16.4 Beta 1 is heading toward us today. My fingers will be crossed. Positive vibes only today! Let's get it! 🔥🚀

It's 10:00 AM PST in Cupertino California. Fire up the beta servers Apple! Let's go! :p:p:p

Still have 20 more minutes left. I hope we get something today. Don't really feel like waiting till next week. Come on Apple!

You poor thing… 😆

The thing about every build released in a beta is that it is deemed acceptable for release by Apple’s QC reviewers. A “Q” released beta should be just as fine to the public as an “A” build: they both passed QC, presumably with the same requirements to do so.

The difference is how they got there, i.e., how many times it took to get a passing grade. That’s more a problem, I would think, for the developers, who need to refine their code so it performs as intended the first (or first few) compile(s).

Masterfully explained. Thank you.

I might go to the dark side of samsung because these beta are getting slack

Added to my list of “users that will be back”.

I strongly disagree with everything you’ve said. AR/VR is the future of gaming and personal computing and Apple’s going to blow it wide open. Bet.

iOS is refined and looks perfectly modern IMO. Yeah it’s got its quirks but I’m sure Apple has enough cheddar to form a whole new team of developers specifically for this market/product/software. It’s been said many times over the years but them developing a new product isn’t going to detract from their iOS/iPad OS development.

I think they are starting to scrape the bottom of the barrel, emoji-wise. Can’t say that I’ve been craving a goose emoji for any good reason.

Yep, really disappointed it's a headset but not glasses.

You can't integrate a headset into your normal routine that much, AR glasses on the other hand....

At the moment, it’s not anything. For my part, I am not going to lament what it isn’t until I know what it is.

Regarding iOS 16.4 b1: I’d say there’s a 35-40% chance it drops today but most likely tomorrow (Tuesday).

Do you think we are getting iOS 16.3.1 and WatchOS today? I am sure Apple is going to release an update before the public 16.4.

Since today is a holiday I think Apple may need until next week for 16.4 beta 1.
