Pretty substantive list of improvements for an x.1 update. Maybe one of the biggest ever? Really enjoying the Favorites and Playlists changes in Music.
I changed the album cover for a playlist to check out the new feature related to colors and the cover for the playlist, but now I can’t see a way to go back to the original (a mix of the actual album covers from the playlist). It is no longer a selection. I only get the new colors/covers or choose a photo option. What am I missing? Am I stuck with only the new stuff now and can’t go back?

I decided to favorite songs in my library and anything I like that I stream from a playlist or radio station, I'm adding to another playlist. I still find it amusing that people ask why would you not add a song to your library if you like it. My response still is think about the Holiday time. You are listening to holiday music and you favorite songs you might enjoy. Do you want them in your library in July of next year or do you want to just like the song to tell Apple Music you like the song and recommend more songs like it during the holiday season.

The love feature to me was not about adding it to my library. It was about telling the algorithm to suggest more songs like it and lead me to albums I may want to put in my library. In order for it to be in my library, I ask, is this a song or album I would buy. If yes, then I would download the song. If no, but I like it anyway, it should go into a playlist so I can keep it for future listening. That's what I thought apple would do. Now they just made favorites and "add to library" repetitive.

Also, my main playlist every year is songs not played in current year. I don't need hundreds of single songs in that playlist. A lot of my library use revolves around play count and last played. Adding hundreds of single songs because I may passingly like them screws up that system.

7 photos. Yay. Try backing up 100GB+ of photos/videos from an iphone over usb 2, then have it fail too and have to baby sit it while retrying. Until now, there wasn't even an option for anything else. I think that is his point. In this day/age, there is no reason for apple to have usb 2 on a premium device regardless if people use it or not. It should be default when you pay that much for the device. iPhone SE with USB 2, sure have it.
Do I understand correctly that you make no backups until the point where you have 100GB+ of photos/videos to backup? Or are you switching backup provider so frequently that you need USB3 for it?

Any love for iOS 15 or older devices? :rolleyes:
Given that the last iPhone not supporting ios 15 was discontinued 5+ years ago ( specifically the iPhone 6), would you mind explaining what the issue is? Because I can't see it, and noI don't change phone every year ( usually every 3-4 years), I allso tend to get the latest model ( within a few mounths afret release) to maximise the usable support window on the latest os, this might somewhat influence my way of thinking

Any news about custom ringtones fix?
What about dismissing notifications outside of notification window?
I've had no issues with custom ringtones on 17. All of them have worked. Have you tried clicking on restore purchases under the ringtone settings, if you are missing them?

Because transferring data.

Which brings me to another thing that drives me mental about iPhones. The lack of a decent file system. And considering that iOS, just like macOS, is based on unix, it does actually have a proper file system, but it is locked down so that the user can't use it. I don't know if that is to stop us simple iPhone users from being confused by it, or from hurting themselves with it, or just purely for Apple control freakiness, but whatever it is, it drives me insane.
Do you mean that you want a more feature rich file manager or that you want apps to be able to read each other’s data?

It is true that Files is not as robust as Finder but I’m not sure that there are a lot of people who would use that. Most app data on the phone isn’t stored as files but in databases. Some apps like VLC keep their videos in files and you can move files in and out of that app directory. Others like Notes are not files but entries in a SQLlite database.

Somewhat off topic, but on a semi-related note, I was planning on buying an iPhone 15 Pro, but something finally snapped in me, and I spat the dummy at Apple, and am about to jump ship from iPhone after nothing but iPhones since the iPhone 4, and am about to buy a Google Pixel 8. I can't honestly say whether or not I will prefer it, or hate it, but I am going to find out.

As a software engineer who most definitely makes full use of the wonderful power features of macOS, for example, the underlying unix system and terminal, I am really looking forward to the power and freedom of Android. I'm also intrigued by the many AI features of the Pixel which leave iPhones for dead.

And no, I have zero desire to leave macOS and my MBP. Nothing comes close.

But iPhones, I've had a fence sitting love/hate relationship with them for a long time.

The somewhat hilarious thing is that the one final nail that broke the camel's coffin, was the slow, and 20+ year old, USB 2.0 standard being foisted onto the base iPhone 15. Hilarious because I was going to get the iPhone 15 Pro, with the faster USB 3. However, it slapped me super hard in the face just how much Apple deliberately hold back their phones, just the right amount to push as many people as possible into forking out for the more expensive models. The absolute audacity to put the 23 year old USB 2.0 standard, instead of the 13 year old USB 3.0 standard, even though the wholesale price difference Apple themselves would pay to put USB 3 instead of USB 2 in the iPhone 15 would be somewhere in the ballpark of $0.01 per phone. It's pure madness, and pure greed. I am sick of it, and am jumping ship to give the Pixel a go.

Wish me luck! I'll be sporadically updating these forums with my extremely honest and blunt experiences with it, the good and the bad.

Conversely, I have just bought the 15 Pro, upgrading from the 11 Pro. Alongside that, I also have a Pixel, currently the 7 Pro. I have owned every iteration since the Pixel 1 and still have that, for the unlimited photo uploads. I agree with everything you say and have had to run both due to my frustrations with the iOS ecosystem (e.g. poor file system, chromecast integration, app 2 app and & system settings seggregation, garmin watch notification setting limitations etc..) but have stopped at the 7 as frankly, Google is now really annoying me with their "get what you are given" attitude.

I feel that the quality of the Pixels is now not commensurate with the price. Little things that add up, like the opening the camera and setting to 5x zoom, it takes a good second for the focus to adjust. The curved edges might look pretty, but I find it finiky when using some apps. On several occassions it too has run very warm and since Google in their infinite wisdom removed the CPU usage setting from the developer options, I cannot see why. Things like that were the clear differentiator, and they are blowing it. Couple that with how dumb the assistant is becoming (my nest hubs are becoming much more siri like, potentially due to Google losing a lot of copyright infringment lawsuits) and now they are even removing functionality from them by taking away Meets and Zoom calling (https://9to5google.com/2023/09/18/nest-hub-max-google-meet-zoom/).

This is exactly why we need more competition in the marketplace, not less, as so many on here seem to wish for.

You are right, it's off topic. For this thread for sure. For the general forum, perhaps.

I am wishing you luck with the Google/Android experience, but keep in mind this is an Apple centric forum, so a lot of people around here will not be interested in the cool stuff or frustrating experiences you encounter with an Android phone.
I certainly am not.

lmao they improved the look of Reachability, but the gesture is now even harder to do than before, it works almost never! They should just change the gesture to double-tap of the home bar…

just installed 17.1 flawlessly.

found no obvious fixing of the following:

widget not updating;
find my App reported previous location of the tracked item;
grocery list sorted wrongly;
contact photo not updated (google contact sync)

could anyone report any hidden fixing of bugs?

Have you/Will you/Can you start a thread, (which will probably devolve into a flame war admittedly), with what you find?
I feel I'm in the same position as you.
I work on site and regularly come across all manner of operating systems and devices and to date not a single one makes me want to leave MacOS.
As far as phones however, my reasons are slightly different. The Android devices I see always look better, (as in screen and interface - not hardware), but I'v been uneasy about all the annoyance that goes with switching.
The foldable devices look really interesting if somewhat fragile.

So here’s something I have run into. Since the 17.1 update, when I create playlists in Apple Music, it used to default to album artwork as the cover photo for the playlist, but now it doesn’t. I don’t even see an option for adding album art like it used to be. The art is still there on my older playlists, but on any new ones that I create, It’s not. I am attaching a screenshot of what I see when I edit the new playlists. as you can see, there’s no option for album art as a cover photo.

"Apple added a new "Display" section to the StandBy section of the Settings app, which houses some new customization options. The display can be set to turn off automatically, after 20 seconds, or never."

As a software engineer, I am constantly frustrated at the lack of control afforded to the user by iOS. It is trivially easy to change the "after 20 seconds" option to an "after [user entered value] seconds" option, where the [user entered value] might default to 20, but the user can merely enter any number from 0 to virtually infinity, including with decimal point. Trivially easy. So unbelievably, trivially, easy. Why Apply, why? Why are you such humungous control freaks?
This is just one example of how they are control freaks.

We get a slider to control brightness on the Apple Watch Ultra 2. However, that slider only has three settings, low, medium, and high.

And to make matters even worse, it doesn't really matter which brightness level you choose. Screen brightness on the AWU2 is controlled by an ambient light sensor, so regardless which of these three brightness levels you pick, actual screen brightness will ultimately be controlled by the ambient light sensor; the brightness you select on the slider will factor into the brightness you get on the screen, so you do have some input into the brightness you'll get, but ultimately, the ambient light sensor has the authority to overrule you.

Still can’t make phone calls with the contacts app or Siri when using assistive access. Tried five phones. Not being able to make phone calls with an iPhone is silly indeed. What a terrible bug.

If nothing else, Apple are responsive to people’s requests. Fixing the Action button to not activate in certain circumstances, such as with the camera or torch. Many people on this forum were talking about this being the cause for the end of days.
Bad UX = "Apple are responsive to people's requests"? 🤣

I have to say, iOS 17 is a very impressive release, so many great features. AirDrop over the webs is fantastic, letting me know if I accidentally put the flashlight on by having it on dynamic island is nice, instead of someone pointing at my leg and saying "hey your flashlight is on" because they can see it through my pocket!

I think maybe I'm so blown away by it as I got the iPhone 15 Pro to replace my 13 Mini so the difference in hardware made a huge impact too.

The whole favourite thing is awesome. However, what I dont see which would be a good upgrade is that it creates a favourites playlist. You can filter favourites and create a smart list but an automatic option would be better

Standby is the best feature for me in recent iOS updates. The night mode is really good but would love a colour option, the red is horrible

Same here...just moving from 14pro to 15 pro for me is a massive difference in the whole phone experience. This might be the year I dont upgrade again next sept
