So far I’m not seeing that. I keep getting generic prompts like “what nice thing have I done recently?” and “what’s the best story I’ve heard this month?” Are you getting specific prompts about you? Or are you basing your comment on the keynote demo?
I base my comment on the fact that you can turn on that feature and that you can tweak it in the preferences. But I suppose that API in the background doesn’t work yet and will come to life in future betas.

Makes sense. Just wanted to make sure I wasn’t missing something.

I didn’t think I would have use for it, but I end up enjoying using this app. Adding context or some thoughts to a picture or video feels nice.

I hope they add a Search bar at the top (like in most other iOS apps when you scroll all the way to the top).

And now my own stuff is starting to populate the prompts. Fire example, I took some photos of my dogs at the dog park today and it gave me a prompt to write about that trip. Much better this way.

Mine has suggested writing about pictures of the Paint the Night Parade that I took at DisneyLand and a couple of pictures I took yesterday evening. It attached the pictures, and a map with the location flagged to my entry.

Have you gone into settings and given the Journal app permission to look at your photos and locations information?
Yes, I do have these turned on. Maybe it has something to do region settings. I have the phone language set to English but region is Slovakia🤷‍♂️..

One thing that may have turned this on finally for me was taking a bunch of photos.

But I also went into the settings, toggled off all the prompt settings and then toggled them on again. Or perhaps none of that did it and it’s simply when Apple decides to turn it on for you.

I went today for a longer walk with my dog, took a bunch of photos, like you did and also turned off and then back on all the toggles, but with no effect. Never mind, luckily I do have much to write about and thus have no need for the suggestions 😄.
Anyway, I decided to let it like that for now and tomorrow (I have busy day planned) I revisit the app and file a report. I have suggestions for the app anyway, as it would benefit of a font format shortcuts directly through the interface and not by tapping empty space to bring up the menu where you can change the font to Bold, Italic, Underlined and so on.

Well I think it's been about a week since the Journal app became available, and I thought I'd share my thoughts so far. Let me premise this by saying I've never kept a diary or journal in my life. I recently heard someone on the radio say that 40 years ago people who kept a diary were furious if anyone else read it. These days, social media is some people's idea of a diary, and they get furious if nobody reads it. Go figure.

Anyway, I digress. Recently moving to the country, I'm interested in documenting daily stuff such as plants, bushfires, and other events, so I thought I'd give this app a try.

I like that the app is offering a rudimentary design; it hasn't been over-complicated. I'm not interested in sharing, collaborating, or getting 'likes'. The only feature I'd like to see added at some point is a flexible export option so I may print the journal, perhaps on a yearly basis, to have a tangible document of a given year.

The suggestions are interesting too because they plant the seeds to think about something I may not have given a second thought to, and I guess this is one benefit of an adaptive digital journal.

So long as it is included with iPhone's as a free stock app and retains its clean and simple interface as it evolves, it's a thumbs up from me.

This Journal app is intriguing, but I also ask, "Why"? Why is Apple making this app? What's their interest?

I'm a little wary of Apple going into apps like this for a number of reason. Many years ago (I think more than 15 years ago), the two major post-photo editing tools for Macs were either Adobe Lightroom or Apple Aperture. I spend several hundred dollars and went with Aperture because I thought having a tool that is well-integrated into Apple's ecosystem would be a plus. Well, it was a plus for a while until some years later Apple stopped developing Aperture then eventually gave it up. That was several hundred dollars down the drain, but worse is migrating things over to Apple iPhotos which then became Apple Photos.

After that experience, I didn't fully trust Apple to make apps in which usually you would think third-parties would be the one to do them instead.

So why is Apple venturing into journaling apps?
Perhaps the question is, why not?

Hmm. Then that could be asked about all apps. Why shouldn’t Apple make this app or that app, etc. it’s not a very insightful line of query.

Yes, Apple can make this app or that app, but given their history, usually there’s a specific reason and I’m curious about that.

I would think it fairly reasonable to assume that any app, or reason, which gets you staring even more at an Apple device, fits in with their risk appetite.

Aaaaand suggestions are here!! 🎆 Tadaaaa.. so it took couple days but is there and not just one. There are suggestions from locations I visited, pictures I took, workouts, music, etc. etc.
Idk why I am so happy, no drams today, I swear😃😃😃

Yup, anything interesting is really up for Sherlocking it seems.

Value-adding I think they prefer to call it

Sure they do. And it’s achieved by sherlocking ideas and taking the value from elsewhere. Run out of ideas, just go after the successful third party developers on your platform and cut into their margins.

I don’t think Day One is exactly shaking in their boots at this relatively austere app. Also, Apple has made the API available to all developers, which will enrich their products tremendously.

To take your analogy to an extreme: Should Apple have not developed iOS? After all, others had developed mobile operating systems first, including Microsoft (which is an Apple developer, too).

I don’t think Day One is too afraid at this time as the customers they have retained by now will be paying for the service. However offering a competitor 13 or 14 years later IS sherlocking to the finest and one will have to wonder why the worlds richest company didn’t invest in this area earlier if they had so noble motives. It’s one of the current features to be hyped, and will address those who haven’t use a journal before more than anyone else, in my opinion.

You nailed it with your last sentence. And those people were not likely to start using Day One and pay money for the privilege. I’m one of those people.

This is like so many other Apple apps, Notes and Reminders in particular. They are ok (and have gotten better), but you’re never going to move a dedicated Omnifocus or Obsidian user to Reminders or Notes. They have already moved past that level.

Will this cost Day One some future users? Perhaps. But it may also spur them to add additional features, making their product better in the process. And people who start out on Journal, may actually move up to Date One once they hit the “feature ceiling” in Journal.

The long tap paste feature of iOS does not seem to be working in the new Journal app. Any idea if this is a feature or bug?
