WOW! Amazing to know that Aperture can still work on current Macs! That’s amazing. It been like I think at least 5 years since Aperture stopped working, no?

Yeah the only issue is RAW Files from newer Cameras won't work however if you convert them to DNG's for example Apertue will recognize them and they can be imported as usual!

After loving on DayOne for years and years as one of the premier apps, Apple is finally sending it off to pasture and giving it the Sherlock treatment.
Been playing around this afternoon with the app and Day One is going to be around for a long time. This new app is pretty basic, no importing, no Tagging. Apple took years to get Notes and Reminders to be anywhere useful, this could take as long as well. No iPad app nothing for Mac.

We are about 4 hours from when this dropped. Let’s see what happens overnight. It may pull stuff in in the evening. I don’t think this is it.
Maybe, but seeing as that was the selling feature I am not holding my breath.

If you care about reading your journals far in the future, you’re going to have to buy a new iPhone every few years for the rest of your life.
By “every few years”, you must mean every 7 years, to tie in with Apple “only” supporting iOS updates for that length of time?

Absolutely agree with you regarding the soft keyboard.

Sometimes at night when I'm awake, a friend several timezones away and I text for an hour. AT some point I get so frustrated with the soft keyboard I say I'm done for the day and go back to sleep. You're so right that the constant need to correct typos is a major barrier to having a steady train of thought. In those cases, the interface becomes the roadblock, a true writer's block, if you will.
I'm one of those people (?) who eschews the software keyboard on the iPad and actually uses the Apple Pencil to handwrite journal entries, meaning handwriting converted to text.

It isn't always fun. I end up correcting quite a few things. Still, iPadOS/iOS handwriting to text recognition is all we have.

Actually, the Samsung tablet with S Pen + Gboard combination did a far better job at recognizing handwriting than Apple's iOS/iPadOS ever has. I'm sad that Apple won't step up their game in the area of handwriting recognition and conversion to text. That technology is a prerequisite for "idiots" like me who enjoy journaling with a pen, yet still want to enjoy the benefits of searching text-based journals, copying and exporting the text and so on.

I’m sure there is or will be an export function. Can someone verify? I’m sure Apple knows it’s possible they may someday sunset the app, so I don’t think they would not give users that option. But I suppose they could not add the export function until they plan to discontinue the app, in which case then yeah it will glue those users to iPhones. But I’m inclined to think there will be an export function sooner rather than at the end, if not now then maybe when there is a Mac version.
I don’t know if it’s certain though that one will be required to update the phone every few years (3 years?) to use the journal app as opposed to updating at the end of the life of the phone due to other reasons (6+ years). Even if the phone doesn’t support the newest iOS, the journal app should continue working. There may be some feature fragmentation between your other Apple devices if those are updated though. But I don’t know if that’s too different from third party apps. Maybe some third party apps don’t even support older versions on older OSes.
I would wait for the import/export function and see how reliable it is, before switching platforms or even attempting to use this new Journals app.

I hope you were just making a joke with your post. The journal data will be stored in the Cloud.
I think the point of the OP's comment was that the user will be tied to Apple products, if they want to access their journal data. It's the same for any digital journaling platform, really. You're ultimately tied to the technology, the software and hardware that underpins it.

I use a private blog in Wordpress. I'm unsure how Apple Journal could benefit people like me.

It probably won’t benefit you.

You need to look at this from the perspective of Journal being an app for people who don’t journal now. It’s a “training wheels” approach. If people use it and like it but want more, it’s more likely that they will move to more advanced apps like Day 1 and Word Press blogs. That’s the Apple way of doing things. Provide an app that does the basics but leave room for more advanced apps to handle more advanced needs.

It’s also beta 1. They may have other features in the can ready to deploy in future betas of 17.2 or even after that. But they may just want 𝘣𝘦𝘵𝘢 𝘵𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴 (remember that’s who are supposed to be using this now) to 𝘵𝘦𝘴𝘵 the basics now.

Well, there goes my Journal app that I made for iOS. I have a feeling that Apple is secretly going around on the App Store, stealing ideas, and incorporating them into the OS so we, 3rd party developers, will eventually be left out in the cold and not be able to compete with Apple.

You're right. We should just pay for a product forever. That's much better.

No problem to pay for my tools for as long as I use them. That, quite cleverly, also makes sure that the developers stick around for constant updates and support. 21st century stuff really, I know.

The big difference for me is that the Apple app is suggesting things to write about based on what you did that day. I'm very much looking forward to this!

Journal seems simple now, but I believe it will evolve in time. How much it will depends how people will use it. I am sure, Apple have means to measure popularity with his apps so, the wider the fanbase, the higher the likeliness they will add more and more features.
We'll see how it will behave in couple days when more and more entries will be added.

As for the therapeutic feature, it is sufficient as it is now. Writing your thoughts to a paper or app helps to find a new perspective on the topic/problem and IMHO it doesn't take much for an app to offer you just this.
It's the extra functionality like suggestions, design, cross app features (photos, camera, dictation...) which will make this app more favourable to use.

So far I’m not seeing that. I keep getting generic prompts like “what nice thing have I done recently?” and “what’s the best story I’ve heard this month?” Are you getting specific prompts about you? Or are you basing your comment on the keynote demo?

I am not seeing that either. This gets tuned probably during 17.2 beta releases. At least I hope. Maybe I go to cinema today, just to encourage it :D
