The fourth beta of iOS 17.4 that Apple released today adds a new CarPlay feature, according to the notes that Apple provided to developers.

In supported CarPlay vehicles, there's now an Apple Maps option to show information about upcoming maneuvers in the instrument cluster. CarPlay users will be able to swap the display type between the main and instrument cluster by tapping on the map configuration button located in the upper right of the main Maps screen.

Apple this year introduced a new next-generation CarPlay experience that will show up in high-end vehicles starting in 2024, but this feature addition is separate from that.

It appears this new experience will be available in vehicles that support a dual-screen Apple Maps CarPlay experience, with a supplementary Apple Maps view that's located in the driver display or head-up display. CarPlay began supporting this functionality several years ago, but manufacturers have been slow to adopt it with BMW, Volvo, and Polestar being among the first on select vehicles.

While those vehicles have supported an Apple Maps view in the driver display, they have not shown text prompts such as upcoming turns or lane guidance, so it appears today's addition will give users some control about what information appears where.

With the iOS 17.4 update, the driver display will optionally display turn-by-turn directions so that CarPlay users can navigate without having to look away from the display directly in front of them.

iOS 17.4 is limited to developers and public beta testers at this time, but it will see a public release in March.

I’d love to have this but I have an older 2020 Mercedes and I doubt Mercedes is going to implement this.
I have a 2020 Nissan. I'm curious though, will it actually require the car manufacturer to provide an update for it? I guess it all comes down to whether or not screen-swapping was built into the firmware running in the car.
Nice way to force use of Apple Maps app to get the latest ‘feature’. No thanks
Apple Maps recently started showing "Waze-esque" information, which I like a lot. I would rather use Apple Maps, only because I don't have to do anything special to get it when I press the "maps" button on my center console.

I guess you have to spin out some of that expensive R&D automated car driving experience somehow...

Wonder if this will work in my Škoda, it already does show the turn by turn in the left corner
The new CarPlay functionality won't be supported on any existing vehicles. I believe some new ones have been announced, but they essentially require an OS re-write for deep integration.

Well, my vehicles are from 1998 and 2000 so I have to do everything by iPhone. I do have a bluetooth to FM transmitter so at least I hear the directions over the radio.

NICE! When they finally added Apple Maps to the instrument cluster in my Polestar 2, I never used it because it didn't indicate the distance to next turn (or the street name!) like it does on the phone itself or in the infotainment system. Not sure how/why this was even left out in the first place.

On the Honda Accord Touring (2023+), the navigation cluster when using the built in google maps shows the actual map in the dashboard. When Apple Maps is running, it shows turn by turn directions with an arrow. I am wondering if Honda will allow for this in this model. Seems the technology is there, just needs to be enabled.

Works well on my car so far, although sometimes the prompt for upcoming maneuvers is in an annoying spot, but I'm not sure how much that can be remedied on smaller screens.

I drive a 2021 Volvo XC-40 Recharge, fwiw.

Same on my 2023 Lexus, I see the turn by turn directions with an arrow on my driver screen and heads-up display. Hoping this update includes these vehicles 🙏

My '23 VW GTI shows next turns/directions in the driver-facing instrument screen if I'm using Apple Maps via Carplay, including a nice little "countdown" bar that indicates how close I'm getting to the turn/direction. Doesn't work for Waze unfortunately, and I'm not sure about Google Maps.

Same for me on my 2023 Ram. Hoping they can further extend this to the digital cluster.

Got a 2024 Pathfinder Platinum to try on shortly :) —- welp, darn.. no change but i will say 17.4 fixed My issue of being able to change the wallpaper in CarPlay … aaaaand yes, i know my Nissan is not high end lol

My VW id.3 Already shows turn by turn in the HUD.
My 2022 Volkswagen Taos SEL only shows next turn in the instrument cluster and VW isn't known for doing software feature updates so I can probably safely assume I will not be impacted by this change. You most likely won't be either unfortunately.

This is good, but what I have now lost on my Polestar 2 is the ability to have the detailed map show in both the dashboard display and the main display. Now one shows the detailed display (i.e. the view you navigate from) and the other shows a large scale full-route overview which is so zoomed out it's of limited value, especially on long trips. You can swap them around, but you have to have one on each view, they can't both show the detailed view at the same time which was supported previously.

When you are all saying that you can see turn by turn in your instrument panel and HUD, you mean the OEM satnav, or do you mean carplay Maps?

my Santa Fe already has turn by turn in the instrument panel and the HUD, but it isn’t CarPlay, but the satnav that came with the car. We don’t use the built in satnav, just CarPlay Apple Maps, but that is only displayed on the large infotainment screen, not the instrument panel and HUD, which this update seems to make possible.
the question is, is CarPlay going to be able to take over the navigation entirely in the instrument panel and the HUD just by being enabled in software by Hyundai, or even if it is possible in cars that already do this with their OEM navigation.
