When you are all saying that you can see turn by turn in your instrument panel and HUD, you mean the OEM satnav, or do you mean carplay Maps?

my Santa Fe already has turn by turn in the instrument panel and the HUD, but it isn’t CarPlay, but the satnav that came with the car. We don’t use the built in satnav, just CarPlay Apple Maps, but that is only displayed on the large infotainment screen, not the instrument panel and HUD, which this update seems to make possible.
the question is, is CarPlay going to be able to take over the navigation entirely in the instrument panel and the HUD just by being enabled in software by Hyundai, or even if it is possible in cars that already do this with their OEM navigation.

On my VW Taos I see the CarPlay map on my main display, and in the virtual cockpit i see just how long i need to stay on this road. Looks like this (Tiguan pictured)

This has always been present. I think people are confusing this update. If you look at the image for the article, that is a Volvo digital dash and it is showing Apple Maps on the dash. I have a 2023 Volvo XC90 and an Audi. Last year Volvo updated their system to show  Maps on the dash when you use  Maps for navigation. I’ve also owned a Tiguan and an Atlas. The Audi, Tiguan, the Taos referenced in my reply, and my Atlas would only show the upcoming directions on the dash, it does not and will not show the Apple Map. Audi should be able to in upcoming models since they stated to support the next Gen  CarPlay. Volkswagen was not shown on the initial screen during the unveiling of Next Gen CarPlay at that particular WWDC years ago. The 17.4 update is supposed to include direction information on the dash for vehicle makers that support the ability to show  Maps on the dash. I tested last night and it’s not working as of yet even if 17.4 has that capability. I suspect vehicle makers like Volvo and others that support  Maps being displayed on the digital dash will need to update their systems.

I was hoping for this because Volvo runs Android Auto OS, not to be confused with Android Auto on Android devices. On my dash it’s Google Maps by default and it will show turn directions & its distance to turn above the navigation map but not the ETA.  Maps on the digital dash shows the ETA, but not directional information.

I was just replying to a question, which was "When you are all saying that you can see turn by turn in your instrument panel and HUD, you mean the OEM satnav, or do you mean carplay Maps?" with "i see the turn by turn for carplay but no map." I don't think anyone here was claiming that this was a new feature.

I'm more likely to win the lottery I don't even play than for automakers to retroactively add this new feature.

I know you were, I liked your photo that’s why I said the referenced Taos post in my post. As some have said in no uncertain terms they have upcoming maneuvers on their dash already, just not what this upcoming update hopes to provide.

As a former VW owner, I was surprised they didn’t announce support yet Audi did years ago at the WWDC unveiling.

I gotcha. Yeah i'm really surprised VW hasn't announced support for this or car key feature by now. Especially since they're so proud of their digital cockpit.

Same here! Especially since Audi and Porsche was on the list. I’ve always loved their digital dash and loved when I had the Tig and Atlas I could get into coding and make changes. So fun! Miss that to make it your own or turn on features that are present but not turned on due to trim level. Enjoy your Taos!

What -- they're catching up to my 2018 Audi Q5 Prestige?! Gotta admit it looks slightly nicer, but it's still lacking until they can do a heads-up display.

Here’s how to switch to get upcoming maneuvers on the digital dash. After seeing this is makes sense, but not initially intuitive since prior to the update the dash and infotainment matched. Going to test after work.

Sir I’ll keep my 2020 AMG, with the built-in speedometer/tachometer.

Nice!
And the other poster was pretty condescending! My “real” Mercedes doesn’t show directions in the cluster. Of course it’s a 1988 560SL…

This upgrade will be nice however. Good to see CarPlay is reaching feature parity with automotive OEMs - my 2011 BMW shows turn directions in the cluster.
Anyone running 17.4 - does this work with heads-up displays as well?

To get upcoming maneuvers on the dash with 17.4 Beta 4 you need to tap this button on the main infotainment screen.

This will move the overview from the dash to the main infotainment screen. Your dash (if your vehicle supports the ability to show  Maps on your dash) will show the following:

Prior to this update it would only show the ETA. Nice to have both the ETA and now upcoming maneuvers. I can only imagine for those on Android Auto OS, default Google Maps in the dash will add ETA. Currently the default Google Maps app within AAOS will show upcoming maneuvers across the top of the map, but no ETA.

Did anyone get this to work in a BMW? The article mentions them specifically. I have a 2023 X3, which has the dual screens. I just finished the 11/2023.50 update for iDrive 7, but it doesn't seem to work.

If you're talking to me, then yes. But it only shows the turn-by-turn directions as before. Nothing from Apple Maps shows up in the instrument cluster.

Did you ever have  Maps show on your digital dash?

It sounds like if you only have turn directions and no map ever being displayed on your digital dash from your iPhone you will not see it until BMW decides to update their software to make that function work.

If your dash looks like this below and your infotainment screen shows  Maps there is no benefit to you in this upgrade. Your vehicle does not support dual screens for  Maps (infotainment & digital dash at the same time). Sure the turn information from the infotainment system that is showing on the main screen is just relaying that information from  Maps and using your vehicles built in graphical user interface (GUI) to show the turns.

In this example from VW for their Taos, I would not expect VW, and knowing the version of the MIB used, there will not be a software update to the media controller to show  maps on the digital dash.

Some car manufacturers may have software updates planned to show  Maps on both screens at the same time. So you may want to reach out to your car manufacturer.

I will use Volvo as an example, they moved from their in-house Sensus platform to Android Auto OS (AAOS). Initially AAOS did not allow dual screens, it would show arrows on the dash as above. An update in October of last year brought  Maps to the digital dash. Now at that time the screens were mirrored and  Maps only showed on the digital dash when using  Maps for navigation. With iOS 17.4 Beta 4 bringing upcoming maneuvers to the dual screen capabilities of some cars. Instead of mirroring you can alternate what is displayed on each screen. Default appears to be routing on the main screen and a “10K” foot view on the digital dash. If you’re not using  Maps for navigation, you can have  Maps on your main screen only with Volvo and AAOS shows Google Maps on the digital dash.

Pressing the above button on the main infotainment screen will swap what is displayed between the screens. iOS 17.4 Beta 4 remembers your last selection.

This is a sample of an  Maps view on digital dashes for those that have a dual screen capability from their car manufacturer. This is from my dash yesterday on a 2023 Volvo with AAOS running iOS 17.4 Beta 4.

The circled portion is new in iOS 17.4 Beta 4.

Yea I thought the fact that BMW just released a big software update meant that it would enable Apple maps in the display. The article specifically mentioned BMW, and the functionality would have to apply to iDrive 7 cars since iDrive 8 is running in the cars with the one giant screen (🤢), it should work in my car. The display can definitely do it, it shows 3D navigation for with the built-in Nav. Perhaps, like you said, it requires another update from BMW or perhaps it'll just work in the final 17.4. I was curious so I got the beta. I'll just wait for the final 17.4 update and see what happens.

BMW will need to update their end. Hopefully they do it and don’t charge a subscription fee for it
