We defend Apple because we don't want most of what the DMA brings. Everything Apple can do to keep iOS and the App Store the way it was before is a good thing.
hey, I totally hear you. I was making a more global statement, an aphorism . the way you get people defending price increase with perf decrease (m2 ssd being a blatant example)

I’m probably the minority (or the only person, actually) who would like to have the iPhone ship with core apps and services, then offload everything else in the App Store. Now that would be an update I’d be excited for!

If I send a mushroom emoji to someone who doesn't have 17.4, what would happen?
As promised 👇

No, my friend did not send a red mushroom, even if it does appear like she sent both. But yes, iOS 17.4 does have both options (brown, and red).

I'm on 17.3 ... she's on 17.4

thanks to @Mac Fly (film) and @Janichsan for getting to the bottom of this! Interesting that 17.3 somehow knows to substitute the new shiitake mushroom with the original mushroom along with a brown square! This has to be the most impressive example of Apple's AI tech in action!

Nah, the most impressive example of Apple's AI efforts was Siri sending me to the other side of the Earth for a café.

Apple were going to include a shitake as a third option, but they didn't have mush-room.

This is what I think operating systems used to be, and should be. I want the OS to be minimal and just an environment to run the programs I want. Not some bloated 20+GB behemoth chalk full of so-called "features" and countless pre installed junk.
Feature creep is real. And they just keep piling on the nonsense to drum up excitement for the next release. What a joke.

That's not Apple's doing but simply how emoji work in Unicode: many are encoded as combinations of simpler emoji linked with an invisible so-called "zero width joiner" character.

For example, the original "family" emoji is encoded as "man" emoji + "woman" emoji + "child" emoji with the zero width joiners inbetween.

Anybody else notice they got rid of some emojis? All the family ones have been reduced to just four options, ...
Technically, all options are still there (shown below in SwiftKey). But yeah, the redesign is puzzling, especially as all other gendered emoji still are unchanged.

"Forced to choose"
My goodness...The oppression

Have you ever set up a new iPhone or Mac?
The "choices" you are "forced" to deal with (From Apple) go on for many minutes and can be 10+ pages.

😄 What was special for me was that I didn't have a choice of not doing it or doing it later, and Safari wasn't even visible at first.

Boy Apple not steering to Safari. That will make the EU whiners happy ;)

Love that! same as chinese compound characters (albeit in chinese chars, woman+child = good)

Took the plunge with 17.4.0

One feature I have noticed is while I’m listening to podcasts while driving if a sound occurs it used to play over the podcast so I would have to rewind it back to hear what was said, well now it automatically does that for you, Nice. :p

I don’t have all those options, I just see four in my keyboard. But regardless, I find it really weird that they went through the trouble of adding extra genders for so many other emojis over the past few years, but in this case they’re taking away the normal genders. I can’t imagine what justification they had for this change internally, if for no other reason than “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it”

I guess it depends on the keyboard you use. As I mentioned, I'm using the third-party SwiftKey keyboard which hasn't been updated yet after the release of iOS 17.4.
