Also, next step with this multi language approach is the ability for maps to use the local language, so it knows how to pronounce street names and cities.
Exactly. It's completely useless here in Japan when Maps tries to combine Japanese place names with English directions. It seems like it should be an easy thing to do.

Anybody else notice they got rid of some emojis? All the family ones have been reduced to just four options, and they boring blue boxes with white genderless outlines showing one or two adults and one or two children, rather than single dad or single mom with sons/daughters, mom and dad, mom and mom, dad and dad, two sons, two daughters, one of each, etc.

If I send a mushroom emoji to someone who doesn't have 17.4, what would happen?

You’re correct. Apple”s support document says: “The country or region of your Apple ID must be set to one of the countries or regions of the European Union, and you must be physically located in the European Union.” and “If you leave the European Union for short-term travel, you'll continue to have access to alternative app marketplaces for a grace period. If you're gone for too long, you'll lose access to some features, including installing new alternative app marketplaces. Apps you installed from alternative app marketplaces will continue to function, but they can't be updated by the marketplace you downloaded them from.” (https://support.apple.com/en-gb/118110).
Also, appd are not disabled when you change storefronts (what Apple calls counties and regions) or use a different Apple ID (but updates will need the correct Apple ID password).
That's incredibly heavy-handed and petty. There's something about the App Store monopoly that really seems to bring out Apple's dark side 👎🏻

I read somewhere that the ability to access the alternative app stores is location based - i.e. if you have an EU account, but go outside the EU it will be disabled. Is this true?

If it is, it potentially creates a significant problem for my daughter. She's in college in the UK, and bounces back and forth between Ireland and the UK. She has an Irish Apple ID, so if she does use the alternative stores, will they, and more importantly the apps she downloads, be disabled whenever she goes back to college?
Hopefully Apple will stop being so heavy-handed and petty about this. In the meantime, she'll either have to avoid the alternative app stores or use a VPN when at college

that is so petty. then again, i'd expect people to defend apple , showing the deepness of their stockholm syndrom and the way the chose to solve their cognitive dissonance . fabulous, truly.
If you look at how much money Apple make on the AppStore then you'll realize that they will do what ever it takes to defend the lock-in.

I personally had looked forward to a firefox which was not a re-branded safari on iPadOS, but I guess it will take sometime before that happens.

Is Apple now going to bother you to enable stolen device protection after every update?

Apparently it won’t work with VPNs. The user needs to be physically located in an EU country. From Apple’s support document: “The country or region of your Apple ID must be set to one of the countries or regions of the European Union, and you must be physically located in the European Union.” and “If you leave the European Union for short-term travel, you'll continue to have access to alternative app marketplaces for a grace period. Isn't the whole point of a VPN that it can simulate physical presence in another country? How would Apple's systems be able to tell?

I'm in EU, updating right now. Is there a switch I can flip to keep all the stuff as it was until this release? Not interested in alternative anything wanna stay in the walled garden.

There is no reason to limit those charge cycle count things to iPhone 15 series.
The phone shall have that data because if the genius bar can see them, then it shall be available to us as well.
Or are the batteries as bad in the 14 as I think they are. After 500 days and a less then daily charge cycle mine was below 80% I had a crappy speaker so get a new phone under apple care anyways.

Can't wait for emulators to be available in alternative app stores! They should just allow side-loading.
How does one in the Americas access EU alternative app stores?
I have a japanese app store account from when I lived there.... So I imagine just using a VPN I can access EU alt app stores?
No, it will determine your location based on your carrier information.
Also, if you live or happen to be in the EU and leave for a prolonged time, some features will be disabled and existing apps from alternative marketplaces will not be updated.

Your physical location will be checked.

We defend Apple because we don't want most of what the DMA brings. Everything Apple can do to keep iOS and the App Store the way it was before is a good thing.
