Apple is expected to announce iOS 17 during its WWDC 2023 keynote on June 5, which is just over a month away. Ahead of time, rumors suggest the update will include at least eight new features and changes for iPhones, as outlined below.

The first iOS 17 beta should be made available to members of Apple's Developer Program moments after the keynote, while a public beta will likely be available in July for members of Apple's Beta Software Program. As usual, the update should be widely released in September, around the time that new iPhones launch.

Some of the features and changes listed below might not be added until later iOS 17 versions, such as iOS 17.1 or iOS 17.2.

iMessage Contact Key Verification

In December, Apple previewed a new iMessage Contact Key Verification security feature and said it would launch globally in 2023. This timeframe means the feature would be available in iOS 17, although it could launch earlier.

iMessage Contact Key Verification allows users who face "extraordinary digital threats," such as journalists, human rights activists, and government officials, to further verify that they are messaging only with the people they intend. In conversations between users who have enabled iMessage Contact Key Verification, users are alerted if a state-sponsored attacker or other malicious actor were ever to succeed breaching cloud servers and inserting their own device to eavesdrop on the conversation.

As an additional layer of security, iMessage Contact Key Verification users can compare a Contact Verification Code in person, on FaceTime, or through another secure call to further verify they are communicating only with whom they intend.

Control Center Revamp

iOS 17 will feature a revamped Control Center, according to @analyst941, a source who accurately leaked some details about the iPhone 14 Pro's Dynamic Island before the device launched last year. The source said Control Center will be more customizable, and the flashlight brightness slider might become freely adjustable up or down, whereas it is currently limited to four preset brightness levels.

Wallet App Revamp

iOS 17 will include improvements to the Wallet app, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. The leaker @analyst941 claimed the Wallet app will be redesigned with tabs and search functionality, as shown in the mockup above.

A revamp for Wallet could make sense as new features continue to be added to the app, including Apple Pay Later and Apple Card Savings.

Next-Generation CarPlay

At WWDC 2022, Apple previewed the next generation of CarPlay, which will feature support for multiple displays, widgets, and integration with vehicle functions like the instrument cluster, climate controls, and FM radio.

Apple said the first vehicles with support for the next-generation CarPlay experience would be announced in late 2023, with committed automakers including Acura, Audi, Ford, Honda, Jaguar, Land Rover, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Porsche, Volvo, and others. Apple said it would share additional details about the next generation of CarPlay later this year, and this... Click here to read rest of article

I just wish BEFORE Apple rolled out something like "iMessage Contact Key Verification" that their iOS would properly get the following done right:

1. Known vs Unknown contacts.
If a contact is NOT saved in my Contact list then they are NOT known to me! Doesn't matter if I've replied to an SMS/iMessage they're still UNKNOW until I save them or I share my Memoji/contact picture to them.

2. Blocking contacts:
Blocking contacts from Phone calls or messages (SMS/MMS/iMessage) I want them PERMANENTLY BLOCKED from contacting me via these methods! Not sending to my voicemail overloading prevent VALID contacts from leaving me a message!

Blocking Contacts from Email should also assign them to Junk Mail folder automatically.

Use iCloud+ 's email relay and IP tech to identify future potential sources matching whom I've blocked and continue to do so - maybe with a prompt.

MacRumors, this is disingenuous (and a bit clickbait-ey) – iOS 17 is not coming soon for iPhone, really.

Its introduction is very likely soon, but that's different to it becoming available to "the rest of us" as the latest OS (a beta programme doesn't count). September isn't soon.

At 73 September of this year is `soon’.

Who does it ruin anything for? If you don’t want it, don’t enable it. Folks like you are acting like you wip would be forced to side load. Millions of Android users with the option to side load never have sideloaded and never will.
Don’t tell him every time you download something outside of Mac App Store or Windows Store, you "sideload".

no new emojis?
Consider the excitement cancelled..... :D
That is upto the folks over at The Unicode Consortium. Apple just stick to whatever standard they pu, whish js the right way to go to enshure interoperability. Oh.. it sas a joke sorry

What does "only in the EU mean"? Does the user physically have to be in the EU? Does it have to be an iPhone that is sold in the EU? Does it have to be activated the first time in the EU? How would Apple enforce those restrictions?
Probably by the address on the appleid associated with the phone

To be honest, I'm sick and tired of watching Apple essentially killing businesses one by one as they eventually come after their products.

And that'd be perfectly fine if they gave everyone a fair chance by using the same public APIs these companies do.

But since they don't, it's just infuriating to watch. Maybe I'm compassionate as I'm a developer myself. 🤷🏻‍♂️
Apple developing their own journal app is fine. If it competes with third party journal apps like DayOne, all the better as that will force innovation and better service and pricing or the third party companies will slowly die off. And that is how it should be.

Start lobbying your elected representative if you want it in the U.S. Otherwise, yes, EU only.
The optimist in me says that this will be rolled out worldwide in a few years, onve apple has enough stats showing it won't creat to many problems and/or to much rev loss. If for no other reason than to tell regulators, look no need to regulate ve 've already done it.

hope sideloading is absolutely nerfed and completely unusable just to screw with EU and the sideloading minority
Why would you begrudge people thst want to sidliad the opportunity to do so ehen it does not affect you, if you don't want to side-load don't. Ok you might miss out on a app or tow, but unless you are thinking about epic exclusive or browsers using other engines than webkit, must developers probably wont to stay on the app stote in spite of the higher fees becaus rhey would probably earn more anyway due to tha larger customer base.

It‘s already defined they are not allowed to do this, you probably didn’t read the DMA. :D
1. 100 popups is an exaggeration.
2. nope. apparently you have no idea what you're talking about.

Until Microsoft/Adobe/Activision/gameloft other big names pull their games and apps and force you to sideload because it was so easy to do.

Make it difficult and they won't pull their apps/games. Sideloaders get to sideload, non-sideloaders get to keep their apps without sideloading. Sideloaders will have no problem jumping through hoops to sideload, as long as they can do it. Win-win.

Of what's currently rumored, nothing really screams out at me. Aside from the journaling app.

Sadly, journaling on my phone is a terrible idea, and I'd prefer it to be made available cross device, notably for macOS, but we shall see if it's even a thing in the first place.
Not unlike Notes' start-on-iPhone, finish-on-Mac experience (and vice versa), I see no reason the rumored journaling app couldn't similarly function across all OSes. At least, I am hoping it will function that way.

Also like seeing Wallet get some much-needed love. The rumored screen shots are promising, when compared to the current version.

While I'm also not yet seeing any big show-stoppers rumored, maybe it's one of those iOS updates where the sum is greater than its parts. Where the whole experience, overall, feels more polished as opposed to any one (or three) app(s) or experience(s) being so overly reimagined. We see soon.

Mostly it works like this: it depends on the location of your Appstore in appstore settings, this you can only set to the location of your payment option, if you have a European bank account and / or creditcard you are allowed to set your location that country.

Why not consult „Obligations for gatekeepers“ of the DMA directly?
Read carefully and pay attention to keywords like „easily“,„not prevent“.

Or to things like „…or software application stores from prompting end users to decide…“ (which means, not Apple prompting to decide)
Or to „The gatekeeper shall technically enable end users who decide to set that downloaded software application or software application store as their default to carry out that change easily.“
Or to „The gatekeeper shall not treat more favourably, in ranking and related indexing and crawling, services and products offered by the gatekeeper itself than similar services or products of a third party.“

"The requested document does not exist."

lol you don't even read your own links...?

"The gatekeeper shall technically enable end users who decide to set that downloaded software application or software application store as their default to carry out that change easily."

keyword "downloaded". then apple should make the download process hard. this isn't rocket science, it's very easy to hinder the process and comply with the law.

tell me again how Apple can't make this painful. this is the exact reason why ITIF is still asking for clarification on the exact process.

Was on the sucky iPad, here the permalink: https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/?uri=uriserv:OJ.L_.2022.265.01.0001.01.ENG

Furthermore the DMA wasn’t written on stones, the EU clearly stated that they will adapt it to the current market situation if Gatekeepers try to circumvent their obligations. I hope Apple tries it, it would just push the DMA to become more strict and hit even harder.

read the last part of my reply. still applies.

also: "The gatekeeper shall not be prevented from taking, to the extent that they are strictly necessary and proportionate, measures to ensure that third-party software applications or software application stores do not endanger the integrity of the hardware or operating system provided by the gatekeeper, provided that such measures are duly justified by the gatekeeper." is largely subjective. Apple could absolutely make it painful for the sake of keeping the integrity of the OS safe.

Guess that password manager is just *never* gonna happen. Not that I wish third-party devs to be sherlocked - and I really enjoy 1Password myself.
