It must be an age thing because I just don’t get excited by any of these features. The name drop is cool but I probably would use that once or twice a year at best..

iPad is more exciting if the stage manager is improved like they say.

Other than that it’s all incremental updates which will be unnoticeable in my day to day.

To me the big game changers for iOS was iMessage, FaceTime, Apple Pay and thr files app. I can’t think what’s been big since then?

Never that eager to upgrade on day 1, as I've usually got a new iPhone upgrade following on later the same week. I think it's nicer to experience the new iOS on the new hardware – but typically update the old iPhone as I'm never sure if the restore will not work as well if it was bringing over a backup made on an older iOS…
I have been setting up as new for the past few years on the new iPhone so that I can really get the full experience of new software + new hardware.

it’s a pain redownloading and signing into apps, but worth it I think for me.

I also don’t bother updating the old phone unless the person I sell it to requests it.

Can’t seem to get standby to work. Got it turned on and connected to charger at an angle and it won’t seem to turn on. I randomly got it working when I installed the RC on day 1 and now it just refuses to activate.

Functions, functions, functions. Apple's iOS was once known for its tremendous simplicity. There was a golden rule: focus on 80% of the features, but make those features solid and easy to use.

But Tim never got that, and needed new features every year to sell more and more, while scrapping the simplicity of iOS.

The features Apple wants to sell should be outsourced to apps without touching the core functionality.

But Tim never understood that.
yep, and unfortunately watchOS seems to be going the same way ...

I’m not updating my iPhone until the night before in time for setting up my iPhone, which I will not restore my iCloud back up to. I always start off fresh, and enter everything in manually. I usually delete apps that I don’t use anymore.

When I've had to /decided do it, it is so nice when setting up fresh. Everything 'feels' as though you're not carrying old cached data and obsolete elements (but that's probably more imagined than tangible).

I agree that the re-downloading of apps is a pain – although perhaps equalled by the way I've had to nudge loads of apps into actually downloading/installing after a restore (the icons appear greyed out, even though they should be automatically downloading).

I like that with the 'set up as new' method, you see all the smaller tweaks and 'onboarding' Apple have implemented to help introduce new features – some of this seems to be missed with an upgrade and I wonder if that contributes to confusion for less detail obsessed users.

Keeping the old phone in it's current state could one day allow you to charge a premium, if there's a controversial iOS change in a new release, or in an app (thinking Twitter > X), and someone wants a preserved version!

Google maps has had them for years. Apple Maps is improving, but for me personally, they are still not even close to being as good as Google.
The only thing I prefer Apple to is the GUI- the animations look amazing, but Google is more precise and reliable day to day still.
I've already posted more than once - Google maps don't even have my road on them! Despite being at least ten years old. Major errors.

We get delivery drivers almost every day wondering where the hell they are because Google maps are so wrong. (I exaggerate - it has calmed down a bit, but a year or so ago, that was literally true.)

Of course, these things vary. For you, Google might be better than Apple.

Standby Mode has me thinking about buying a Magsafe stand again...

For those who have and use one, do you like it? Was it worth the high cost they seem to have? What kind did you buy? And does anyone know what stand Apple is showing in their promotional material for Standby Mode?

I'm getting a bit overwhelmed with all this feature stuff. I guess its good to keep up but wow. I need manual. I know of the user guide online at apple, but that's not really a full guide. Is there one that I can find?

XS had the A12 chip and 8-plus the same year release had the A11 - which was about 20% better. You tell me that made such a difference for this iOS version?

I purchased this MagSafe charger on Amazon.

I can’t wait to try it out when I receive my 15PM on Friday. I’m more excited to use iPadOS 17 for the Health App. I use my iPad minI 6 99% of the time at home, and it’ll be nice to have a larger screen when viewing the Health app.
I totally agree. having the health app on the iPad is very helpful

I don’t know how old you are, but I’m in my 70s and am liking several of iOS 17’s new features. It’s more a matter of how you use your phone than age.

For example, Live Voicemail will be very helpful. (I’ve used it a few times already.) I get a ton of calls from numbers I don’t recognize and usually don’t answer them, so I may miss an important call. Yes, I can just wait for their voicemail and call back, but this will be more convenient.

Improved autocorrect will save time and lessen frustration. Improvements to the Weather and Reminders apps are also good.

Most “new features” with new iOS leave me completely unmoved. I make phone calls, text, email, sometimes use camera, airdrop, access internet, sometimes play solitaire. The rest is essentially pointless gibberish.

I often say these phones do a million things you will never use, but as long as they do the half dozen or so things you need then you’re good.

The one in the promo picture is the Twelve South Forté for MagSafe Charger
I've had this 3 in 1 charger unit on my nightstand the last few years and love it.
It was $30 but no fast charging. I charge everything overnight anyways.

Will the new Apple TV OS also be released tomorrow?
Hopefully so. I want to try out FaceTime on the Apple TV.

Speaking of that, is the little stand they used during the TVOS presentation at the WWDC the MagSafe Belkin one they sell for monitors? I want to get a little stand like the one they showed in the presentation.
