This is a buggy one folks. Been on public beta and it’s the little things. Swipe to type requires extensive babysitting still. Wallpapers get washed it colors. Dynamic island timers don’t update. Not trying to whine just a heads up. Might want to wait unless you’re devastated for that full screen Memoji caller.

Am I misremembering something, or wasn't there a time when we could use an iPod as a bootable drive for a Mac? By this point, we should realistically be able to drive an external display with our iPhones and use them as our primary computer in such an environment, right? Is that possible at all?

the only feature from that list that I am looking forward to is the better auto correct, everything else, I don't care about.

And I wouldn't upgrade for some time if I hadn't order the AW Ultra2 which will have watchOS 10 installed which in turn requires iOS 17 ...

I'll also be waiting til like mid/late afternoon to avoid the "don't see it here ..."
What iOS were you on?

Looking forward to the iPhone 15, non-pro, to try out with night sky photography. Yes, the pro could do better - but I am looking forward to seeing what the 'regular' iPhone 15 can do with a 48MP camera. Downloadable maps in iOS 17 is a welcome addition too.

That said..

"Hey Siri" vs "Siri". Does it really matter? As a joe average English speaker, every interaction I have with Siri generally follows this chain:
"Hey Siri"
"Mmhmm"
"Are there any X in Y?"
"Okay. Here's what I found on the web." [insert useless links here]

Unless I want to do very simple calculations, or very basic knowledge questions, Siri is the most infuriatingly useless voice assistant I have ever come across. Sometimes it can be so infuriating that I really begin to question if anyone at Apple even uses Siri for more than trying to impress someone who has no experience of other voice assistants or GPT, or to do simple addition or conversion of kilo to lbs.

Yes, okay, Alexa is not great, and neither is Google - but it's 2023 not 2003 and Siri is somehow stuck in the dark ages. Dropping "Hey" from the conversation doesn't endear me to my half-baked voice assistant any further.

I've seen the rumors of Apple developing AI, and I'm sure we will see how wonderful that pans out with autocomplete (/s). The "proof is in the pudding," (another phrase that baffles Siri) as they say, but for now - Siri is still a dead product taking up space that I'd rather not give to it.

Come on Apple, impress me like you used to do.

Do we know for sure what is being released today? Is it going to be everything IOS, IPadOS, WatchOS, and MacOS?

It must be an age thing because I just don’t get excited by any of these features. The name drop is cool but I probably would use that once or twice a year at best..

iPad is more exciting if the stage manager is improved like they say.

Other than that it’s all incremental updates which will be unnoticeable in my day to day.

To me the big game changers for iOS was iMessage, FaceTime, Apple Pay and thr files app. I can’t think what’s been big since then?
Not even the autocorrect (if it works as described?)

I'm going back to Android after my one trial of iOS on a new PM13 2 yes ago. Tried hard to like something in it (camera) but the keyboards and horrible speech reco are pushing me back within the next few months. Will give iOS17 a try to see if it can get to within 50% as accurate as Android.

So, ummm how long before someone add a pornographic image to their contact poster and starts random dialling?

I'm assuming contact posters will only work for people already in your contacts?
Is their some AI to prevent nudity in photos being used?

Yeah, the much worse battery life is the one that will have me hitting pause on this one. I thought iOS 17 was mostly supposed to be a stability update, but it's not looking good.

I'm getting a bit overwhelmed with all this feature stuff. I guess its good to keep up but wow. I need manual. I know of the user guide online at apple, but that's not really a full guide. Is there one that I can find?
Here is a PDF from Apples website breaking down all of the new features in distinct categories. It's just text only, but I think it's pretty detailed and puts all the info in one place! :)

same here. There's going to be even more accidental Siri requests happening without the "Hey" now.
I think that you will be able to choose if you want to activate it with "Hey" or not... at least I am pretty positive that I read somewhere you will be able to choose. 😅 I use "Hey Siri" all the time so its going to be hard for me to get used to it if that's not actually an option to change it back.

It's the twelvesouth stand in the magsafe section
That price is crazy given the lack of the charger. I hadn't looked it up before. I printed a stand for standby that integrates a magsafe puck for pennies and a few hours of patience, maybe I need to get into selling phone accessories...

Glad to know I wasn’t the only one thinking that. Going to have to check Printables.com and Thingiverse.com and see what I like.

Anyone else feel the "+" in iMessage for apps is atrocious? Seems now I have two taps instead of one tap? Let's keep the icons where they were folks.

Live voicemail sounds cool. Can we add programmable filters?

IF text contains "We are trying to contact you about your car's warranty"
THEN Decline and Block Contact

YES SIR, brought the screenshots!! Love to see it.

On a 2022 SE myself, 15.7. Absolutely solid, stable, with killer battery life. Gonna ride this bad boy out until apps aren’t being updated for iOS 15 anymore!
I’m the same way. iOS 15 will receive app updates for a while since they cut off so many devices with iOS 16. Look at what happened with iOS 12, Apple occasionally still releases an update and many apps still support it. As long as you’ve downloaded the app in the past, or on a newer device, you’ll have access to it from “Purchased Apps” on older iOS.

Depending how many iPhone 8 and iPhone X are still in the wild, iOS 16 could be supported with updates for a while as well.
