El oh el. The EU deserves every bit of this. You wanted Nanny Vestager to go after Apple for bogus violations & cries of "monopoly!!!" , now reap the consequences. People in the EU are going to be dead last when it comes to getting new iOS-iPadOS-MacOS features (if they get them at all) and it's going to be amusing to see.

But alt App Stores hooray right?
Like we give a crap 😂

The revenge from Apple !!

More likely it is because Apple doesn't want to give the EU more targets to fine.

Now that Apple has given the EU its own regional version of iOS, I can see this happening more and more.

If Apple hadn't promised users in the EU that they would get Apple Intelligence, I could see Apple not releasing Apple Intelligence in the EU due to the future danger of compliance lawsuits.

Apple needs an iPhone without a port... EU will cry

I’ve always had an US Apple Account (back in the day, iTunes offered free US TV show pilots). It seems to be the only thing they check. For instance, I have my iPhone and Mac in German, and iPhone Mirroring works fine. Although I hardly ever use it. I think I would use it more if I could force it to stay in the foreground at all times, but I don’t think that’s possible for some reason.

This is the problem: EU regulation has not any problem with iPhone mirroring on macOS...
The EU regulation says that for "integration" features such as this one, if Apple offers it to itself it must allow competitors access to the same/similar APIs so competitors can build a competing feature. Given the security and privacy concerns with letting a third-party having complete and total access and control of a user's iPhone, it's understandable that Apple would rather not release that feature than give that sort of access to third-parties.

I wish they'd make switching between different accounts easier! I've got Apple accounts in the UK (where I'm from), Germany and France (where I live), Switzerland (where I often work), and US (where I almost moved to). It's a pain to have to log out / in to a different one (and it ****s up Apple Music library for some reason).

Yes, they love to use privacy to prop up their anti-competitive practices. Except that screen sharing API is already available in the EU - so this whole argument is just an example of Apple being a capricious monopoly - and it only strengthens the case for it being regulated.

not a huge loss. iphone mirroring sucks. the whole point is to use it when your phone is not near you or you are too lazy to pick it up....

and they make you PICK IT UP and unlock it before you can use it most of the time. Stupid.

While to some extent I agree that it's stupid, it's a security feature to make sure some one using a Mac can't just start mirroring a random phone. Or how about law enforcement having access to your Mac and being able to automatically get access to your phone without your consent? Scenarios not likely but could potentially happen.

With all that said, I do like screen mirroring as it lets me use apps that aren't available on macOS or iPadOS for that matter. I had the notifications mirror to my computer for a while but that got too annoying so I turned off the vast majority of them.

For a future feature, I'd like to be able to group notifications on my Mac by _device_ and be able to clear by device. because ideally the iPhone mirroring feature also comes to iPadOS too.

Anyway, just my $0.02

Apple is not a monopoly in the EU. It has 30% marketshare, so pretty much the opposite of being a monopoly.

Do you have a source for your claim that there is an iOS API "already in the EU" that allows control of a user's iPhone?

And do you disagree that allowing a third-party, say Google for example, the ability to see and control everything on a user's iPhone has security or privacy implications?

It’s unfortunate, but that’s what happens when governments have strict regulations to “protect” consumers. I’m sure Apple has to meet with regulators and discuss if it is allowed in its current form or needs to be modified.
Another American thinking the entire world needs to adhere to American values and standards. Narcissistic behavior.

You don't need to log out of your device completely. Changing the account in "media & purchases" is enough but yes, it does wipe your library. Another reason I use Spotify

"which brings Apple Intelligence to the European Union for the first time"

It's been on macOS in the EU since launch.

I'm a EU citizen and I'm not annoyed, except with all the typical apple fanboy bs here.

You want to do business in a market, comply with its rules.
Simple as that.

And if apple starts to cut too many things, they will have fewer customers here. Up to them to decide if they're ok with that.
Except that the EU makes up rules as they go and retroactively dish out fines. Great business environment.
