I hope it’s not just put icons anywhere and a huge list of ai features I want a complete redesign with new functions
I will be happy with functional autocorrect in my language a getting type prediction finally. And powerfull, easy to use and fast to use scripting environment. Plus million little things :D Other is cherry on cake.

This does not sound good. Seriously. Apple have proven over the past decade that they don’t do big changes well. In fact I foresee them doing an Apple Car turnaround on this release weeks later and scrapping it. As an ardent practitioner of not upgrading my OS this could be an interesting watch from the sidelines.

Isnt it about time macrumours stops with the endless "what to expect" series. If the past 5 years one thing was proven its that 75-80% of your predictions where nothing else then bull.

Give me a toggle so I can turn genAI OfF.
That’s all I’m asking for
Every time they announce "X has gotten better thanks to our neural engine" I find feature "X" has usually gotten worse. I'm to the point now where I wish I had iOS 4 or 5's spellcheck because the current one is a hot mess. Can't wait to see how bad things get with this new "Generative AI". 🙄

Amen brother. This is now a home for dumb predictions and ”huge” discount links. Real news has taken a place at the back of the queue. Meanwhile it took 5 corrections to the autocorrect to make this paragraph readable. Apple really is going backwards. So this biggest update ever is something I will be avoiding.

Next thing we know it will grammarize our posts and emails.

I wonder will iOS 18.0 essentially be a later iOS 17.x version but with better integration of:

1. Third-party app stores.
2. Sideloading of apps.
3. GSMA-compliant RCS messaging support.
4. Third-party access to the NFC chip functionality.
5. Possibly a true dedicated Headphones app with far better support for non-Apple/Beats branded headphones.

Due to legal issues, this may have to be done before the other rumored changes originally planned for iOS 18 are done.

Two things I would like to see in Messages.

I used to use an Android texting app called Textra it had two features I liked.

1. delayed send of a message I could select up to a 6-second delay (or so) after I hit send to change my mind about what I texted and cancel the message. It is very helpful when you are in a text spat with the spouse.

2. Scheduled send of a text. So if I think of something at 5:15 pm af that I need a team member to do the next morning. I could schedule a send time for example 9:05 am the next morning after they have clocked back in but probably have not gotten too deep into anything.. That way it respects their private time. But, I don't have to worry about forgetting to ask them to take care of it.

Now I know there is a shortcut for #2 but I find it to be a bit clunky and would like the features baked into messages.

Remember when Apple called last years watchOS the biggest update ever and all we got was a new (annoying) way to open control center?
Gosh, and sometimes I still have moments where I do that swipe up from the bottom

That gesture is just so engrained into my muscle memory, and when they changed it to a single press of the side button it drove me batty (and it still sometimes does!)

That gesture is just so engrained into my muscle memory, and when they changed it to a single press of the side button it drove me batty (and it still sometimes does!)

Exactly and there is still the other thing … a bug that occasionally does not register my swipe down to open missed notifications unless I completely restart the watch 🫠

This is what I’m afraid as well… if iOS 17 was a minor refresh, and it has been plagued with bugs, a big revamp of the operating system will be a hot mess like you said, unless…

…there’s the possibility that they have been working on this redesign for several years in parallel, especially optimizing the low level code, and now they’re just adding the AI stuff on top.

But no, I’m not very optimistic if I’m honest.
Yeah, and that's probably what it'll be

The design will probably by and large be the same; the only thing I hope they don't do is pull the whole thing on us like they did in early releases of 17 where they changed the position of the end call button

Two things. First, I think adding the texting features with Android will be great, and FINALLY being able to move icons around is LONG overdue.

Secondly, I wonder if the iMessage changes coming have anything to do with Apple being sued by the US Government.

Apple would need to do something seriously dramatic to entice me to even consider buying on a yearly basis.
Especially as I wouldn’t need to do this for other OEM’s or AI apps.

With more capable inference we might experience feeling of having GPT4 in your pocket vs 3.5 on the last years phone. Relatively speaking.

(I do not impose GPT4-side model could fit in phone yet, but that we might have that quality delta for years between latest and last year).

This might get the same people who pay for GPT4/Claude to upgrade.

M-chips are beyond most computing needs. AI inference is an exception.

Reason I paid 4k vs 2k for MBP was for having enough resources for local LLMs. If this would become more common, Apple might again hold a reason for upgrading.

Same applies to A-chips.

It's kinda sad that instead of being excited, I'm just wary. Wary about all the bugs and glitches and wary of AI features

how about a shortcuts app that allows true automations that include system level changes ala Tasker and macrodroid?
