I feel like this article should be pinned in any discussion on "why does Apple have so many bugs?" and "why is Apple late on delivering stuff?".
Exactly my point above....things are going to get much worse. Android will be infinitely better. It already is better. Only reason I prefer iOS is due to the ecosystem and it being locked down.

It left because there is a lot of bigotry in the UK, and the owners of most of the media were worried they might have to start paying taxes. It certainly wasn't to protect Apple.

maybe Apple could up their 25% by making stuff more compatible with non-apple stuff, maybe you are onto something.

BIGOTRY! 😂 Please. Looks like ARM is actually still based in the UK so the point is moot anyway.

And maybe they could, but they’re doing quite well making high-end devices with excellent software and services. Apple doesn’t want to make commodity smartphones and its outrageous that the EU thinks it can force it to do so.

I have to agree with Apple on this. Apple has invested millions of hours of software development time, and billions of dollars of R&D. Now some freeloading company can come along, create an app and make millions without having invested anything in the original platform. If they want, they can build their own platform to put their app on, or go to a competing platform.

I think it would be hilarious if Apple just stopped selling their phones in the EU. See how the people revolt over that.

It's incredibly unfair to give away Apple's hard work and innovations to its competitors for free. It's wrong, and the EU should be embarrassed and ashamed.
But competitors do that all the time to Apple. I hear on Macrumors that Apple is potentially bringing out a folding phone. I wonder where they got that innovative idea from.

Apple’s argument that this is stifling innovation is just BS. They will be forced to make their products more attractive so people still buy them instead of competing brands.

As always this last decade… Apple wants to rule out competition because that would hurt their sales 💰💰💰

No one is forced to use other brands, but at least you will be able to choose out of free will.

👍🏻
Strangely I tend to think apple doing these things will bring a lot of people over from android. This stuff will make Apple far more attractive business will boom and then Apple might actually become a monopoly 😀

It would, indeed, be hilarious to watch Apple's share price tank faster than Tesla's. I think the shareholders will be getting their pitchforks ready for sure. Go on, Tim. We could all do with a laugh.

I think a lot of people are supporting this because they misinterpret the demand from the way it is written.

(Or maybe I am, and it’s written correctly, but I don’t think that’s the case.)

My understanding is they have to allow the iPhone to interoperate with 3rd party devices - NOT that they have to offload their software ONTO third party devices.

So it’s not sharing IP. It’s still very much closed-source and belonging to Apple. But they can not just… block out your google watch, or your Samsung headphones, for instance.

If my interpretation is correct, this is a big, big win for consumers.

Apple is already a monopoly in quite a few key markets. The iPhone holds 45% of the UK phone market, for example. The overall market share of 25% is split across countries where Apple is an also-ran. 25% would be the threshold to be considered a key player in the market in the UK in terms of monopoly regulations. Apple is well over that.

They have to allow AirDrop to function on Android devices, so yes it’s stealing IP

45% of the market makes you a monopoly? A minority share? No wonder the Europe isn’t competitive - they don’t understand how math works 🤣

This is not a free market. Apple should not be forrced to support a clock they didn't develop. Ridiculous!

All this complaining about the EU. If it wasn’t for the EU Apple would never have switched to USB-C.

Have people forgotten about that?
We haven’t forgotten. We just don’t care. But we also remember that stupid warning that forces us to choose cookies on Every… Single… Website that we visit. All courtesy of the EU.

Apple must make changes to iOS that allow for third parties to offer equivalent AirDrop alternatives by June 1, 2026.
Would Apple implementing the Bluetooth OBEX profile be sufficient? That is the default way of sending files between phones before iPhones existed, and Android supports that method too.

  • Apple must make changes to iOS that allow for third parties to offer equivalent AirPlay alternatives by iOS 20, or the end of 2026. iOS 20 is expected to be released to the general public in September 2026.
  • Third-party smartwatches must be able to display and interact with iOS notifications by the end of 2025, which likely means iOS 19.2 or earlier.
Reasonable - provide an API to access sound output or notification data

No they will have to allow an Airdrop function to work with other platforms. That’s quite different.
How is taking a feature that Apple likely spent millions of dollars to develop, and uses to differentiate its products, and giving it to the competition, completely negating the competitive advantage that it expected when it invested said millions, not theft?

I don’t want to hear anyone in the EU ever complain about Apple not innovating anymore, because you’ve completely taken away any incentive they have to do so.

I would get this if Apple were the only choice, but from what I know most people in the EU use Android phones, so I don't really understand why they think this is necessary.

You clearly have no idea what constitutes a monopoly. Perhaps a bit of reading would be in order.

Again, the idea that a firm with 25% of a market constitutes a “monopoly” is laughable and those who wrote that into law should be mocked for not understanding how math and language work, even if it’s the law.
