My XS Max is still running just fine. The battery is a bit degraded but still gets me through the day. Personally I wouldn't upgrade just for the OS but have been thinking of upgrading for the satellite communications as I do a fair amount of backpacking in areas with no cell signal.

Well that sucks, as an owner of a XS Max I got in 2020. I was hoping the original rumor was true to get another year, but I guess I'll be getting a new iPhone this year.
Not to be funny but even if you got your phone in 2020, you couldn’t reasonably have expected that many updates for a phone released in 2018 initially. It got 6 major iOS updates since 2018. That’s amazing.

Do like my boyfriend roommates does. He buys the older model iPhones (he’s on a new 13) because he doesn’t care about the top of the line hardware and he got his iPhone 13 this January through metro by Tmobile for free(he upgraded from an 11 this past January.

So in about 2 years he will likely be jumping to a 15/16e when the rest of us see on the iPhone 19.

I have another friend who literally used his iPhone 8 right up until the other week and he got the iPhone 16e only because he doesn’t plan to probably another iPhone for another almost 10 years lmao. Before that he had been using an iPhone 3GS

Earlier rumors said the opposite. I don’t think this is going to end up true considering the chips/ram, like others have commented it doesn’t make sense to drop support for an iPhone with the A12/4GB but maintain support for an iPad with A12/3GB.
This is pretty normal though as iOS 16 dropped the iPhone 6s & SE 1 (A9) and the iPhone 7 (A10), while the 5th gen iPad with the A9 got iPadOS 16. The 6th gen iPad (A10/2 GB) got iPadOS 17 but not iPadOS 18, while the 7th gen iPad (A10/3 GB) did receive iPadOS 18 even though the 2nd gen iPad Pros (A10X/4 GB) did not. Ultimately it just comes down to Apple making sure that base iPads are still getting 6 years of software updates, even though they are typically released with 2 year old chips.

iOS 19 will not be available on the iPhone XR, iPhone XS, or the iPhone XS Max, according a private account on social media site X that has accurately provided information on device compatibility in the past.

The iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and iPhone XS Max all have an A12 Bionic chip, so it looks like iOS 19 will discontinue support for that chip. All other iPhones that run iOS 18 are expected to support iOS 19, with a full compatibility list below.
  • iPhone 16e
  • iPhone 16
  • iPhone 16 Plus
  • iPhone 16 Pro
  • iPhone 16 Pro Max
  • iPhone 15
  • iPhone 15 Plus
  • iPhone 15 Pro
  • iPhone 15 Pro Max
  • iPhone 14
  • iPhone 14 Plus
  • iPhone 14 Pro
  • iPhone 14 Pro Max
  • iPhone 13
  • iPhone 13 mini
  • iPhone 13 Pro
  • iPhone 13 Pro Max
  • iPhone 12
  • iPhone 12 mini
  • iPhone 12 Pro
  • iPhone 12 Pro Max
  • iPhone 11
  • iPhone 11 Pro
  • iPhone 11 Pro Max
  • iPhone SE (2nd generation or later)
While these iPhones will support iOS 19, advanced features may be limited to newer iPhones with faster processors. Apple Intelligence in iOS 18, for example, only runs on the iPhone 15 Pro and the iPhone 16 models.

As for iPadOS 19, it is expected to drop support for the seventh-generation low-cost iPad with A10 Fusion chip. It sounds like iPads that are equipped with the A12 Bionic such as the iPad mini 5 will be compatible with iPadOS 19.

The source that shared the information also provided details on the devices that would be compatible with iOS 18 ahead of when iOS 18 was unveiled.

Apple is planning to introduce iOS 19 and iPadOS 19 at the Worldwide Developers Conference that is set to begin on Monday, June 9.

No XR or the XS range?? Wow.. It’s been an era.. :’( .. we need our smartphones to last longer somehow.

I just activated an old 11 for my kid to use since we get a free line for a year with Spectrum. Guess I'll just upgrade her to our regular T-Mobile line when 20 comes out.
Hello, I am about to do the same with SE2020. The iphone 8 form factor allows me to use same phone cases between 3 generations. Thumbs up for Apple for doing this back then.
Still not missing Apple AI as long as Chat GPT apps can run on this device. Have a nice day.

Apple really shafted the A10 Fusion with iOS support. iPhone 7 only got 5 years of updates, while the 6S got 6 years of updates. Meanwhile, Apple should be aiming (if anything, aspirationally) to support iPhones like they did the iPad Air 2.

They cut off support for iPhones with the A10 with iOS 15, but still support an iPad with an A10/3GB to this day. iOS and iPadOS just aren't as closely tied support wise as you might think anymore.

My 11 Pro is starting to show its age but I’ll still hold on to it one more year until it totally craps out on me.

My own phone is at the very bottom of that "supported" list, so I guess I'm good for awhile. And since I have no desire for Apple AI, nor do I bank/surf on my phone, I'll probably be good for a little while longer than that.
I only bought my SE v2 when I got a letter from the TracFone people, telling me I had to upgrade because they weren't supporting "2G" anymore. :D
So I might have to upgrade my phone when "4G" is no longer supported; hopefully I'll be dead by then and won't have to spend the money. 🤣
What were you using prior? iPhone 2G?

The 6s received 7 years of iOS updates and the 7 received 6 years starting out with iOS 10 in September 2016 and ending with the release of iOS 16 in September 2022 (and it just received a security update today). 6-7 years from release date seems to the standard now for iPhones and base iPads. The iPad Air 2 received 8 versions of iOS/iPadOS and that seems like what they will be doing for the iPad Pros with at least the 1st and 2nd gen iPad Pros each got 8 versions of iPadOS so far.

When they no longer support your phone then the apps gradually stop working.
Even if you don't use many, you will still have a problem with Safari, Chrome etc. You won't get the latest version.
You will then find it's broken on a lot of websites or works very badly. It'll gradually get worse.
Government forms, banking etc can be a problem anyway but they will almost certainly stop working fairly soon after.
If you use a VPN for work then good luck with that too.
I thought I'd get another year out of the XS max as it works perfectly and I don't need any new features.
Yes, it's a good run for an old phone but on the other hand it's still working perfectly electrically and I don't really need to recycle it yet.

Long list of devices. Will be very nice if the 11 series gets it. Of course many of the new features and Apple Intelligence will be restricted to newer devices. But will be good if the older devices get the update. Great to have long software support.

A14 Bionic - iPhone 12 series as minimum for iOS 19

A13 Bionic - iPad 9 as minimum for iPadOS 19

Did I miss something? User titles are now breeds of dogs.

I don’t feel like I’m losing out on much by not having AI on my 13 Mini. :)
Same, my iPad and Mac both support AI. I deactivated them on both. It's a bloatware at this point. I don't see any use for it. Unless they make it more interesting, it's not worth it.
As for the iPhone, I'm planning on running my 13 mini to the ground before I am forced to use a gigantic screen phone due to lack of anything else on offer.
