This. Im tired of the updates. Im tired of the new releases. This absurd, we don't need to constantly push new code, we don't need new features, new releases. We need stability, security and bug fixes. These are mature products, and they are critical for people's lives. It's not a joke, we don't need them to constantly be breaking things just for the sake of being able to say "we have X now" at WWDC.

Technology should improve peoples lives not over take it.

And don't even get me started on them dropping support for the XR and XS. Perfectly functioning devices, and I know Apple provides security updates for a limited time after dropping support, but we're essentially relying on their good will. I wish they'd be consistent or something. At least say "We guarantee security patches for 2 years and then 1 year of critical security fixes only". Like back in the good old days, companies used to provide EOL notices and timeframes so that if you bought something for your business, you'd know how long the vendor supports it.
How many years do you want the XS line to be supported for?

iOS 18 is great on the iPhone XS/R and 11, so I'm optimistic about 19 running well on my iPhone 11. I haven't felt any version of iOS struggle on older hardware since the iPhone 6 era.
The reason why iOS 18 is running great on the XS/R is because it’s missing features from iOS 18 because the chip & the ram can’t handle it

Should be a mandatory 10 years for current OS, and another 10 for security updates. As in, it should be illegal to sell a phone without AT LEAST a decade of current OS support, and another decade of current OS updates or security patches. Failure to maintain support means the company buys back the phone at original release price or the CEO goes to prison for the rest of the time it should have been supported.

7 years is NOT reasonable.

XS was my previous phone, and the run it had is pretty impressive.
Had mine not succumbed to battery exhaustion on top of a few other issues (screen cracking, problems with the Lightning port), I might have foregone the upgrade to the 13 that I wound up purchasing on discount after the 14s were released. Loved my XS, and it literally took a licking and kept on ticking for a long time.

Sorry, I try not to use the laugh reaction, but... you cannot be serious!

Such as? It’s honestly the same experience minus the camera and screen.
Apple’s own website tells you on the iOS 18 page at the very bottom that iPhones under the iPhone 12 that these phones are missing features
That is what they do as your iPhone gets older like the bottom tier ones on the list they don’t get every feature so the iPhone still runs well

My 13 mini is creeping down that list though…. 🙁
No worries the coming 2 yrs at least - then Tim has left.
More hope for something small, after that. The flip might come earlier though.
Something that can replace my mini will come - hopefully with joy or at least with acceptance.

My own phone is at the very bottom of that "supported" list, so I guess I'm good for awhile. And since I have no desire for Apple AI, nor do I bank/surf on my phone, I'll probably be good for a little while longer than that.
I only bought my SE v2 when I got a letter from the TracFone people, telling me I had to upgrade because they weren't supporting "2G" anymore. :D
So I might have to upgrade my phone when "4G" is no longer supported; hopefully I'll be dead by then and won't have to spend the money. 🤣

Curious about the "don't bank" perspective. Do you view that as a security issue? It's up to the banking apps to ensure security.

Dropping devices……meaning that IOS 19 will cost a lot of performance and battery drain

I don’t get excited about iOS updates. It always looks the same as the previous version and I don’t use 90% of the features anyway. I only use my iPhone for internet, email and a few apps.
Well, the problem sounds it’s you lol

It’s always been the case that older iPhones missed out on som newer features, but they didn’t always perform well after several major iOS updates like they do these days. iOS 18 came with a lot of quality of life updates even for the oldest hardware it supports.

That’s because now a days the operating system actually has more than 1gb that’s why it runs better & coupled with them chopping off iOS 18 features for older iPhones then it makes it a pleasant experience

Yup, the XS is what I’m still using. For my use case, it’s been a great phone. I’ve only been waiting for the time when it would no longer be getting Security Updates and it looks like that time has come. Well. 16e is next then.

More interested in the MacOS support. Apple is certainly eyeing dropping support for our late model Intel Macs, but since the Intel Mac Pro was replaced only a couple years ago and some Intel Macs were released less than 7 years ago we should get at least one more release.

I'm guessing that if you have a Coffee Lake (8th gen core) Intel chip you probably won't be getting MacOS 16, whereas Macs with Xeon and 9th and 10th gen Intel Core chips will get MacOS 16, but that will probably be the end of the line. We'll see in June though.

I hope not as that would cut out Macs not yet 6 years old at the time of the MacOS release. It used to be 7 was the magic cutoff number (with some getting more) but it seems like Apple more recently has been dropping newer machines than that which is really unfortunate. Even 7 wasn't long enough.

Yes but there are different factors involved in the software updates for android

Like why would a lot of android OEM’s offer 7 years of software updates how are they going to make money unless it’s Samsung or pixel

That’s because when Apple releases an update it’s one company pushing that out to everyone unless it’s the pixel line
Still my point still stands. Not only do they launch with outdated android versions but they at best may get one major update.

Someone earlier asked why we still use Apple if the quality of the OS is slipping (it’s not) and this is a prime example.

I rather have one central being creating my hardware and curating the software to have a phone that I know from the iPhone XS to the iPhone 16 family, can run the current OS well and I’m supported both security and Os vs android where there are way too many factors and a bad choice can lead to a bad phone.

There’s no “bad iPhone”. There’s just better iPhones than others.

Does pixel phones not get software updates for years now?

Does the flagship Samsung phones not get updates for years now?

I think your a bit confused about only getting one software update from android if you buy a cheap android then of course that will be the case

Of course it is. But I was originally referring to the post joking about how iOS 19 would run poorly on the iPhone 11, which I don’t expect it to do.

RCS was the only interesting thing about iOS 18.
Agreed. Even then, it still breaks frequently. Not sure if it's the carriers, end user or something else. A conversation that is RCS sometimes falls back to SMS and then back to RCS. Makes no sense.

That has changed fairly recently though. The Pixel 7 series is only getting 3 years of new OS support followed by an additional couple of years with security updates. Compare this to the iPhone XS that has already receive 6 years with major iOS updates (7 if it supports iOS 19, which other rumors have suggested it will) and should get at least two more years of security updates after that. It is only with the recent Pixel 8 and 9 series that they are guaranteed 7 years of support.
