I'm sure I've heard this before and it's never materialised. They seem to prefer iterative refinements now and they've brought the colour tinting and dark mode to icons with iOS 18, I would like to see things freshened up properly though. iOS 7 was well over a decade ago and 18 still looks very similar on the home screen by default!

Cool, can’t wait til Sep/oct for the actual release…
Apple should FIX IOS/iPADOS first. I am tired of having to quit applications to restore functionality. It used to be the frontmost application would work even with many others running. Now you need to quit the background apps.

Considering iOS has really only had one* major redesign (iOS 7), it's not exactly saying much that the next iOS will have some of "the biggest design changes in iOS history"

*two major redesigns if you count the 2017 transition from TouchID to FaceID with iPhone X and iOS 11 (which I personally don't)

IMHO they should try to focus on consistency and stability, more than UI gimmicks. Apple has been criticized for overpromising and underdelivering on the software side.

I dunno man, iPhones have had the same UI since 2013 and WE STILL DON'T KNOW WHICH TEXT IS CLICKABLE AND WHICH IS NOT because Apple decided that UI buttons are too damn ugly and just got rid of all of them

There's so much that can be done and improved on the UI front that could greatly enhance the usability of iPhones, why anyone would think redesigning a UI is a gimmick is beyond me

If you struggle to innovate, I suppose you can always make cosmetic changes. And no doubt some more emoji.
Who is innovating in mobile os today ?
Truthfully ( please ) new design changes is not what the goal should be? May I kindly suggest :

1) Battery efficiency excellence ---> Battery lasting one week
2) Storage efficiency excellence-----> Programs taking less space for the same function.
3) Processing efficiency excellence----> Apps running leaner & faster vs faster chips repeatedly.
4) Security efficiency excellence .

With much appreciation and incredible respect for the people who write code & engineers out there !!!!!
Speaking about unrealistic expectations… one week battery life ? Seriously ?
Probably one more reason to not upgrade my phone just yet. My 14 pro max works fine for now
What does it mean ? We are speaking about iOS here, not a new iPhone. iOS 19 will run on iPhone 14 Pro Max…

“We trained hard—but it seemed that every time we were beginning to form up into teams we were reorganized. I was to learn later in life that we tend to meet any new situation by reorganizing, and what a wonderful method it can be for creating the illusion of progress while actually producing confusion, inefficiency, and demoralization.” Petronius Arbiter

Yeah, Vista was so ahead of its time… Cupertino, start your photocopiers! /s

At this rate, we might even see the original iPhoneOS-like skeumorphism return in ~2030.

Personally, skeuomorphism cannot return soon enough. Not because it looks pretty, but because at least you knew what was a button and what was not.

Now it's just all text and you don't know what text is clickable and what is not because of "aesthetic reasons".

Man this **** is said before every new iOS release

And all we get is a buggy unstable release

Just look at how poor iOS 18 is
Where is the polish which iOS carried for all these years??
Did they say the SAME thing about IOS 18 and Apple Intelligence? "Built from the group up with Apple Intelligence"
Then none of it was available at launch and most is still to come later.....

Can't fix Siri. Can't innovate the iPhone anymore … Well, we can do UIs. Here's a new UI to distract you.

It's so obvious that it's sad.

Plz since the iPhone X let us just hide the annoying home bar and make the keyboard layout better take the . Away as I always use it when typing
I would sacrifice.the "smarter Siri" or any of the Apple.Intelligence if they would just let me.type without the.random period in.the middle of my.search terms!

I don’t dread change itself, but I dread any major changes made to tools I have to use daily by an industry that has lately been demonstrating a pattern of making broken, clunky functionality.

I can’t think of a single Apple design or feature in at least the last 5 years that has added some indispensable new functionality. or more alarmingly, every time they’ve modified or replaced existing functionality, it somehow becomes subtly or substantially worse.

Like people can claim everything is roses all they want, but the simple truth for me is that I’m a techy person, and somehow the people making tech these days are increasingly making me disillusioned with technology.

I don't really care about the cosmetic changes, but I do think both iOS and iPadOS could use some fresh ideas.

The iPhone, despite growing bigger in size over time, still doesn't feel like it has any ideas how to actually use the additional real estate.

The iPad could be a revolutionary device and just isn't. I have your regular desk job with spreadsheets, documents and presentations, with lots of in-person and virtual meetings. I could frankly use a new way of working that combines the power of my computer and second or third screens with the simplicity of a paper-based notebook for notes and sketching ideas etc. This whole segment could use a traditional Apple shakeup of taking what is there (eg Surface tablets) and actually making it work.

You don't need skumorphism to see button shapes.

Bear in mind that iOS6 didn't have button shapes for everything (view an email message or new email in the footer for example)

OMG, can you please be a bit rational?

1) Battery efficiency excellence ---> Battery lasting one week. NO, the iPhone battery is already excellente when considering size and performance vs duration.
2) Storage efficiency excellence-----> Programs taking less space for the same function. NO, apps use more space because there are more features than ever, like it or not, this will not change, Apple should implement an option to clear an app's cache like Android.
3) Processing efficiency excellence----> Apps running leaner & faster vs faster chips repeatedly. Apps already run smoothly.
4) Security efficiency excellence . System is already very secure, there have been some malware apps on the app store, but besides that, almost every other security incident often requires physical access to the device or some randome iMessage bug.

The new interfaces will adopt the design principles introduced in visionOS, the software for Apple's Vision Pro headset. That includes greater transparency and new types of windows and buttons — and that should make all Apple devices feel more consistent and familiar.

Pretty cool. But what I cannot stand is the incorrect use of the term "transparent" interface elements. Small class session children:

Transparent is defined as being able to see through an object (such as glass) clearly. Meaning it's clear and unscattered, you can see what's on the other side without struggle.

Translucent is defined as allowing light through but scattered also known as: BLURRY.

The design elements throughout ios and other UI interfaces in various software elements such as Windows 11 as well, and various Android UI elements where it's blurred but allowing the images or objects underneath to somewhat appear through the interface but in a blurred manner is what is called TRANSLUCENT.

It is so annoying to me that the terms are being incorrectly used. LOL I know, I'm a freak, but so what.

Just let me turn off the stupid App Library screen. I have organized everything just the way I want it...
Yes please. It has been requested a lot that we be given the option to at least show the app library as an alphabetical list only which for me at least would be some solace.
