They’re always hyping iOS “revamps” and it always looks the same. Not falling for it again.

Apple is planning for a major design overhaul of the iPhone, iPad, and Mac interfaces with the introduction of iOS 19, iPadOS 19, and macOS 16 later this year, reports Bloomberg. The update will "fundamentally change" the look of Apple's operating system, introducing a more consistent cross-platform experience.

Apple plans to update the style of icons, menus, apps, windows, and system buttons, and the company will simplify the way that users navigate and control their devices. The changes "go well beyond a new design language and aesthetic tweaks."

While specific details are scarce, it's supposedly the biggest update to iOS since iOS 7, and the biggest update to macOS since Big Sur.

There are design elements taken from visionOS, but the update is only "loosely based" on the Vision Pro interface. visionOS features round app icons with a lot of translucency, plus a simple navigation system and more use of 3D elements.

It is Apple's hope that a revamped interface will renew interest in its latest iPhones, iPads, and Macs and distract from the delayed rollout of Apple Intelligence Siri features.

We'll get our first look at the new design in iOS 19, iPadOS 19, and macOS 16 at the 2025 Worldwide Developers Conference, which will take place sometime in June. After that, the updates will be tested for several months before seeing a public launch in the fall.

Fantastic! Looking forward to it. To those who think just because new bugs are introduced with new features, that we should just “fix the bugs and leave it at that”, what uncompetitive, stagnant world are you living in? Go over to any Google Android forum and you’ll see many complaints of bugs and issues after every release. This is the reality of software development by humans. It will not stop. AI will help in the future, but there is no such thing as perfection or complete lack of bugs. And, there are always those vocal ones who claim “this was the buggiest release ever”! I’m so glad this big redesign happening. Two thumbs up, Apple.

its clear that the intent is to make the interconnectedness of the operating systems more intuitive and apparent.
in order to do this and for usabiility sake, the design language needs to be consistent between the operating systems.

the result will be able to make it less apparent (less important) that there are indeed separate operating systems on each device.

this is great news.

and yes, if the general direction it takes is the visionOS-ification of organisation and icons, the result should be beautiful.

iOS is incredibly inconsistent in UI, buttons in Notes.app for example are misleading or Phhotos.app complete trash and really bad design choices like search button in top of the interface, really bad to reach, camera app took simplicity over functionality, Phone.app and Contacts.app should be merged into one, Safari.app on the other hands hides useful tools like closing all tabs by holding a tabs button longer which most people don't know exist. Tips app should actively be integrated whitin system giving users tips trought app expirience etc

And it will still have bugs and iPad iOS will still lack functionality. But meh it is what’s it is and we all use it day in day out.

I think macOS 17 will contain the redesign, Apple seems to have a pattern of making major UI changes like these every 6 years or so. macOS 17 will probably also drop support for all remaining Intel machines.

iOS 19 needs to have some kind of Stage Manager that runs at least two apps side by side. Something lie running the camera to film and having the Notes app up, the same time. When plugged into an external display or TV, there needs to be a way to use the full screen resolution of the display to display things other than screen mirroring. iPads can do it. iPhones are strong enough now. No excuses!

Got a great idea, let users decide if they want a new UI or to use the existing UI. It's my device, why should I be forced to learn a new UI just to check my damn voicemails.

Introduce a back gesture by swiping from rh side of screen, swipe awayable notifications, notifications that work with garmin watches (I have apple watches, but Garmins fit my needs better) and full gboard, or a gboard like keyboard, and I'll be happy.

I’m sure I saw very similar articles about how iOS 18 was going to be the most radical redesign of iOS yet and be based on the new Vision Pro design language
