The IPSW method is considered to be more “thorough”, so it is used by geeks when things do not work smoothly after installing OTA. It does not always resolve the issue at hand, but gives it a good chance.

The OP’s issue with Apple Devices makes it a bit more complicated, as either Apple or Windows or both might be responsible for numerous glitches.
He routinely has issues upgrading using the Apple Devices tool and then loudly proclaims that the update is horrible/flawed but continues to use it even though it is garbage.

I’m still not convinced he isn’t trolling us.. :D

And him calling upgrading via OTA as “niche” is crazy seeing as how I’d bet over 90% of users upgrade that way… (I use IPSW myself since I have a MacBook)

He probably use that POS Apple Devices software that everyone but him knows is crap and causes issues. Certainly 26.1 RC installed fine and is working great for most it seems.

Obviously it is an issue if the software behavior is inconsistent/unpredictable, right?
More victim blaming behavior

I’ve got an issue new to this RC. Spotlight search only results in installed apps, none of the other functionality like dictionary search, metric/imperial conversions etc works. Restarting fixed it for an unknown amount of time before breaking again.

Another issue in prior 26.1 betas not fixed in RC is I have a Control Centre page dedicated to Home controls (lights, scenes) but after each OS update the buttons return to an unconfigured state. If I long-press and tap to configure them, they’re already set to what they should be but backing out again they’re still unconfigured. They only way to fix is to either delete and set up from scratch or change each button to another accessory/scene and then back to what I want.

The small number of Home controls on my favourites (heart) Control Centre page are unaffected by this.

Curious… have you updated the devices in your home acting as hubs?

It ceases to be “victim blaming” when you routinely have major issues with that software but continue to use it.

If you keep getting mugged walking down a dark alley in the middle of the night, at some point you have to stop walking down that alley. Take an Uber (OTA).

We're blaming Apple for making Apple Devices a PoS.

We're blaming you for continuing to use it despite the fact we, and you, know it's a PoS.

If it was fixed and working in recent history, how am I to know it’s (once again) broken and no longer usable? Should I blame MacRumors for that one?
If you know-it-alls were aware of the current state of the software, maybe you should’ve said something.
Unfortunately once again I am being used as the test guinea pig without any prior warning.

Yes it’s been a bug for years but I’ve always used a workaround. Plug in your phone and turn on messages in the cloud and wait awhile. This always triggers the indexing for me. If you have a ton of photos within threads this could take some time maybe an overnight or 2. If you don’t have too many it could take 10-15 minutes. Give it a try. After it’s all done then I turn the switch off and it’s good to go.

On my son’s 17 pro it took 2 weeks for his photos to show back up within messages threads without turning on messages in the cloud but they eventually did. But if you are impatient like me try turning on the messages in the cloud to force it to do its thing.
I always have messages synced with iCloud. I have toggled that switch and forced a full sync and rendexing multiple times and it doesn’t work for me. I’ve tried to turn off iCloud sync and download and disable and that doesn’t work either. I’ve turned off search and iMessage and signed out of Apple account and then signed back in, turned on iMessage and search/ Siri and still doesn’t work. All things being considered, it’s an annoyance vs other functions. My work around is to set up albums in photos for those contacts I want the photos and download and save to that contacts album in photos app.

It seems to be a widespread but random bug.

I work in It and legit heard a boomer in IT the other week when asked why they still use on-prem vs the cloud and his answer was “the cloud is less secure”.

Tech is always going to be flooded people who don’t know what they’re talking g about or think their antidote is universal

Unfortunately, it does seem so. I don't know anyone else who uses it.

You have to just keep logging Feedbacks, and maybe start a thread specifically about Apple Devices so that others who use it can band together. The more Feedbacks, the more chance of someone at Apple actually caring.

Why am I still swing white icons inside some folders when using Clear Icons?

Another thing, twice on 26.1 b4 I got apps frozen when installing from App Store. Wouldn’t re-install wouldn’t finish install could not pause or use app. Grayed out. Had to restart to resolve (and then re-update those apps).
Anyone else seen this? Never had an issue with App Store installs in all my years with an iPhone (since 3G before App Store)! Astonishing that “restart” is now the solution for iOS issues.
I had this twice on b4 where apps got stuck updating on the iPhone but not iPad and a reboot solved it both times. But don't forget AWS had 2 major outages and the App Store uses AWS, among others so it may not be an issue with the beta itself. Let's see if anyone runs into this issue on the RC.

UPDATE: AWS again and Azure now are having outage issues.

My Home app is still broken. All my smart accessories say "no response" and I can't even remove them from Home so I can reinstall them. I submitted a bug report via Feedback with the last beta.

I asked about the bug. I never said I hadn't experienced it - I do everyday.

I'm in the UK on a 16e. Perhaps it's the new modem. Perhaps it's issues with elements of my cellular network.

Although I've anecdotally heard that people with pro phones - Qualcomm modems - have experienced the problem too.

It only seems to have started in the last few weeks with the last patch. So fingers crossed the issue has been resolved in the forthcoming update.

I updated to 26.1 RC because I was having this issue on beta 4. Couldn't download new apps or update old ones. All fixed on RC.
