I used to type MUCH faster with earlier iPhones. Not sure if the larger screen is a factor. I was a keyboard ninja on my first few iPhones with 3.5" and 4" screens. Now, on my iPhone 13 Pro, I'm constantly correcting my typing. I wonder how long this keyboard bug has existed, and maybe it's a factor in my keyboard woes?

The iOS keyboard is a disgrace. I'm forced to use Microsoft's SwiftKey even though it hasn't been updated in like 10 years but it still performs better. It lets me choose any two languages to use at the same time, and you can swipe using any language, not just a handful. The autocorrect is also acceptable.

Meanwhile, with iOS:
  • Still no Multilingual support for any two languages of your choosing
  • Still no swipe support for every supported language, only a select handful
  • Sill unusable autocorrect that insists on "correcting" words that are already correct, and insists on making huge changes to words with minor typos when all that's needed is to swap a single letter or to add a single accent. If I typed a 3 letter word, I probably didn't mean to type a 9 letter word, for f sake.
  • Has absolutely no understanding of suffixes and prefixes in Hungarian, it does not realize that these words even exist and insists on separating them or modifying them.
  • ChatGPT deals with this flawlessly, why can't they just use AI to solve this problem? Instead of stupid, useless gimmicks, this would actually be useful.

Update: An earlier version of this article mentioned a viral video that highlighted an issue where a letter would be replaced with another when typing, but it turns out the user was using QuickPath and did not have autocorrect enabled.
This is untrue, in the video I showed the keyboard settings of the device and at the 1:12 mark you can clearly see that autocorrect is enabled contrary to what this article states.

so is 26.4 RC not even worth the test? it sounds like the keyboard bugs remain. curious how many are using slide-to-type with autocorrect and predictive disabled. it's the only way i can maintain some sanity when using the ios keyboard right now.

The overall typing experience on iOS has been getting worse for several years now. It often feels like the keyboard is actively working against the user. And I find myself having to proofread everything because autocorrect will randomly change words in nonsensical ways like a mischievous gremlin.
Lost count of the times I’ve sent a message not noticing Apple ‘autocorrected’ me with word that is out of context and my intended word was spelt correctly the first time 😩

I hope this is true and not Apple saying things for the sake of saying them.

I’ve almost switched ecosystems due to this. I can no longer type as I am required to, I’ve even disabled “character preview” in keyboard settings because it seems to *somewhat* improve the accuracy.

It’s horrible. To add insult to injury there are almost 0 apps using the new stylized keyboard in iOS 26. Apple apps are still the only apps — many months after release — that have changed their keyboard.

No other developers really care, so depending on which app you’re in your keyboard looks different and jumps all over the place.

Awful, horrible design. No excuses for it and people really should be fired.

Yeah, that person is Craig Federighi. He's been telling us basically every WWDC that both typing and Siri are better. Both are in a worse state than ever, and he's responsible for ALL operating systems.

Installed the 26.4 RC build and gave it a quick test, I'm no longer able to replicate the "thjmbs" typing issue. Will test further.
Would love to hear if you’re able to reproduce any other typing bugs/issues which we can crowd source getting fixed 🤣

iOS does have multilingual keyboards now. I use a combined English and Italian one all the time. It’s really nice.

Awesome! And hopefully the upcoming Google AI brain transplant can fix spellcheck and autocorrect.

Good to see improvements to keyboard. As of now I use SwiftKey and not the default one. Will try it out after updating.

too late, this started happening around iPhone 12, its taken them almost 5 years to acknowledge and resolve this

I already preordered Oppo Find N6 due for delivery tomorrow.

I just figured I was finally getting old. While that’s also true, it’s good to know that it’s probably not the reason I suddenly can’t type very well anymore.

What about the spellcheck that comes on the ar on top of the keyboard on iPhone and iPad. sometimes when I select it if I have a misspelled word, it only picks up half of the word, that’s been a bug for three months now?
