Everyone is wondering why the kids are all sending only voice memos instead of typing text. And also complaining no one can write properly anymore, nor even spell a simple word correctly.

The keyboard was a solved problem. I don't know by which magic but Apple managed to break it so badly that it became completely useless. No matter which method I tried to reset the keyboard, try alternative keyboards, reset dictionaries, nothing works. It's even worse after each new release.

Whatever method you use to enter a text, it's a nightmare. And if you're speaking another language than English, it's worse than a nightmare. And God forbid you to try to edit anything you have typed.

Every time I want to write something, I have to prevent myself from cursing.
How can this experience be so bad?

I haven't tried recent Android phones, but can someone tell me if it's better on the other side? This keyboard situation is so bad it's becoming a compelling argument for me to switch.

GBoard is good but it has some annoyances, like inserting incorrect variants (too instead of to). That said, nothing peeved me more than iOS autocorrect system.

I hope this also fixes where they decided that the letter I meant I wanted to spell U...even though I've never typed it this way in my life.

I’m pretty sure they trained the autocorrect language model on social media. It’s hard to get it to use correct language sometimes.

I’ll say that so far on the RC typing is at least not as buggy as it was, as far as I can tell.

I think maybe because iOS learned the wrong words over time it would also be neccessary to delete the dictionary in Settings -> General -> Reset

I did that right after the update and for me it feels much better for now. Let`s see how it will be in the next couple of days

ios swift keyboard is so stupid, it actually gets the word correct the first time around by the time you move to the next word it auto-magically changes the prior word to something different. By the time you hit send, it would have authored for you a different piece of text than you intended.

why wonder if Android's is much better

The iOS 26.4 update that Apple plans to release as soon as next week includes improvements for the built-in iOS keyboard. In its notes for the software, Apple says iOS 26.4 offers "improved keyboard accuracy when typing quickly."

ios-26-4-keyboard.jpg

There was a bug in iOS that caused some characters to be missed when a user was typing quickly. The character appeared to be tapped in the keyboard, but was ultimately not inserted.

The missed characters could impact how auto-correct worked, as it was unable to predict what the users meant to type when there was a missed character.

There were multiple complaints about the bug on Reddit and other sites. Users said they felt the keyboard had gotten much worse in iOS 26, leading to far more typos. With iOS 26.4, this issue should be addressed, preventing the missed letters from causing words to be misinterpreted by autocorrect.

If you've experienced issues with the iOS keyboard that have been fixed in iOS 26.4, let us know in the comments below.

Update: An earlier version of this article mentioned a viral video that highlighted an issue where a letter would be replaced with another when typing, but it turns out the user was using QuickPath and did not have autocorrect enabled. The video features QuickPath's intended behavior, and does not serve as an example of the issue that was fixed, but some of the comments on the video likely related to the issue that Apple did address with the iOS 26.4 update.

Finallu!

I've just spent hours testing the RC build of iOS 26.4, while typing accuracy does indeed feel somewhat improved the key highlight/input mismatch bug is still present and is definitely not expected behaviour from slide-to-type.
thank you for the feedback. it resets my expectations. at this point, the bar is so low for apple software that I have to dig underground to find it.

[update] is there any difference with autocorrect and predictive disabled?

iOS does have multilingual keyboards now. I use a combined English and Italian one all the time. It’s really nice.
You can't combine Hungarian and English. Why? Makes no sense. Apple has an official presence in Hungary, they have iOS localized in Hungarian, they have autocorrect in Hungarian, why not dual language support? SwiftKey has had it for 10 years or more.

Because it HAS!! The keyboard is absolutely terrible right now. Why does it suggest "OSS" so often when I swipe "is"?? WTF is "OSS" and on what planet is that the most likely suggestion for what I'm trying to type in the middle of a sentence!? Or all of the potentially violent terms that it's impossible to swipe - go ahead and try to swipe "assassinate" for example. Yeah, like "assailant" is what I wanted to say there. Or try "murder" (border) or "rape" (rapper). You run into these terms often when talking about things in the news. It's ducking ridiculous.

It's very troublesome, the fact that the keyboard intentionally tries to neuter what we're saying... First amendment censorship, anybody?

Does anyone know when this bug originated? He said it was in 18 as well as 26, but I wonder when it first started happening. I'm still on iOS 18 and it feels like I run into this a lot and never had an explanation for it until now.
Don’t say that. Everyone here loves 18 and hates 26. 🤣

I’ve installed 26.4RC and find it’s working better than was 26.3. I don’t know if it’s just me, but is the font rendering smoother than before?

It's not just fast typing this issue manifests itself, but with dyslexic typers as well, especially on the iPhone keyboard in landscape mode, which is surprising as it's a larger area and should be more easier to use and accurate.

Also, the cursor has been a lot more difficult to place back at the start of text fields after some words have been typed without selecting the whole of the first word.

The iPad keyboard has been better than the iPhone one but not trouble free in this area.

I did start to wonder if I was developing some neurological decline that was impacting typing accuracy or exacerbating my dyslexia!

These difficulties have driven me to considering Samsung next, but I'll check it out in a store before drastically migrating ecosystems.

Allegedly "Improved keyboard accuracy when typing quickly"

I haven't seen any improvement.
But children are sure happy for Apple’s hard work on “8 new emoji including an orca, trombone, landslide, ballet dancer, and distorted face are available in the emoji keyboard”
