It's needed if they are going to introduce Neo with only 8gigs Ram. It will take optimization to keep it and M1 MacBook Air alive and well.
I also expect that Apple will need to greatly cut back on changes that break applications, otherwise the education market will become very unhappy. Apple should be making noises about supporting applications that run on MacOS 27 (Rosetta 2 excluded) for at least 5 years.

In my opinion, the Mac software marketplace has suffered from the various changes that broke a lot of software as the developers were getting tired of having to re-write applications. One example is LabView, which was originally written for the Mac, with National Instruments no longer supporting the Mac due to changes in the user interface.

The 2026 Neo is likely to be good news for all of the 8GB M series Macs.

There is a lot going on under the covers (at the OS) level to even make fat binaries work in the first place. It would be better to remove all that cruft, and code where compromises were made by Apple to support both platforms. Also, Rosetta 2 won’t be available at all in Tahoe. Less bloat on the disk for sure, but also less bloat required to handle both platforms at the OS kernel. Apple can truly optimize the experience for Apple Silicon now…
Fat binaries support is built in since NeXTSTEP, and it has been used since the PowerPC to Intel transition for x86/x86-64 and ARMv6/ARMv7/ARM64 transitions. It’s still going to be used for the upcoming ARMv9 transition.

"Most people make the mistake of thinking design is what it looks like," Jobs told the Times. "That's not what we think design is. It's not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works."

I'm not one of those irrational Tim Cook detractors, nor do I worship at Jobs' altar, but instead of the idealistic word salad cultural missives he produces about Apple's 50th and other milestones, Cook should direct banners with those Jobs' words to be hung in the halls of the Spaceship, and across the rainbow stage in the middle of it.

To illustrate with an example from tvOS 26:

In what universe is this remotely acceptable, never mind a desirable UX?

The warning signs prior to 26 being released were abundant, and they proved to be valid.

LG is fundamentally flawed as a UI, and heaping preference upon preference to try to fix its shortcomings for users who aren't blind, or at least those trying to comprehend what is in their screens, does no favors for the programming either.

Processor cycles are being consumed to draw these elements, and algorithms used to accommodate the superfluous effects. And when they fail, like with the some wallpaper colors being rendered in black, it's more than fair to question the fundamental choices that were made.

Doubling down on stupid is stupid.

So, intel Mac’s get the iShaft?
Yes, it was announced that Tahoe is the last macOS Apple would ever produce for Intel-based Macs. However Apple will continue to provide security updates for two to three more years after Tahoe’s release. After that you’ll need to switch to Apple Silicon as not even OpenCore Legacy Patcher can help you install newer macOSes on an outdated Intel Mac.

That is not normal. I have a 1st gen 4K (no LG) and a 3rd gen 4K (which gets liquid glass). Neither of them look like that.
What Apple TV model is this?

I don't think Snow Leopard had to fix the UI as well though?

I think Leopard had already ditched Brushed Metal, so no. It’s easy to forget about that now, but I really didn’t like Brushed Metal either. At least it didn’t impact readability though, the way Liquid Glass does.

Snow Leopard introduced some new graphical features and really wasn't stable until later point releases.
Yes, but I think everyone saying “snow leopard” because eventually it became stable while halfway threw macOS 26 still buggy.

Snow Leopard was my favorite OS. ❤️
Gorgeous wallpapers by my NatGeo friend Steve Winter.
Incredible user interface, beautiful, efficient, no lags.
Back in 2009 it looked like OS from the future compared to all those Windows machines.
Good old times.
Steve was still alive.
My grandmother was still alive... 😢

Well, I don't want to be *that* conspiracy guy, but since I have downloaded the Tahoe on my 2021 macbook pro, it has significantly deteriorated in the terms of battery life, smoothness and the fans are on all the time.

Edit: Yes, it's iOS, but still, please, fix my mac 😩
Thats standard code to force you to upgrade.

I can only hope. Snow Leopard remains the best OSX version. It had COLOR in the finder!

MacOS looks so much like Mac OS 6 with black and white finder icons, and grey everywhere.. Come on Apple, you're building Macs that have luscious displays, bring back Snow Leopard style colors to the finder!

To me, peak UI/UX was around Mojave/Catalina, before the iOSification. I also loved Tiger/Panther.
Big Sur -> Sequoia have been pretty good.
I never liked the look of Leopard/Snow Leopard, but Lion to Mavericks were acceptable.
And liquid glass has potential, but it's currently horrendous.

Well, I hold off updating my iOS from 18 to 26 for about a year now. Today’s software development simply can’t allow “stability release” even though this is the best for customers. Shareholders won’t be happy if Apple can’t produce new stuff, while customers won’t be happy if Apple can’t produce stable and usable stuff.

I’ll believe it when I see it. Though given apples obsession to satisfy their shareholders, I don’t have much hope as a customer.

Ahhh, OS X Snow Leopard. Still have very fond memories of that release. It even kept me stalling the eventual update to OS X Lion.

If Apple is truly serious about this approach to iOS 27 consider me very excited.

I am using Ventura on my Intel Mac and Tahoe on MBA M4. Generally it seems to me that Ventura is a Windows 10 (in analogy with PC world) and Tahoe is like Windows 11. Both are usable, but Ventura really is very lean and efficient. Tahoe is OK but has a lot of unnecessary eye candy. If Apple cleans up Tahoe to make it more business like Ventura, it will be a great efficient OS.

How? Isn’t the AI a huge new feature? Lol I feel like there’s gonna be a ton of new stuff here
I could care less just fix that damn Voice chat transcriber PLEASE! It’s like it’s become stupid. It stops halfway through sentances changes words and just has regressed so much for me.

Should I use like grok or Gemini and turn on their speech refognition it works flawless. Just apples built in system is sooo bad.

I read this news as Apple being focused on updating iOS for foldable devices and macOS for touch screens, which means Apple doesn't have bandwidth for any other features.

But that would be terrible for users that don't benefit from those, so you focus on bug fixes and refinement in your marketing.
