+1. There comes a point where you have to be smart about it, cut your losses and move on.

If Apple provide an unsatisfactory response at tomorrow's press conference then I fully intend to do just that.

I am also waiting on a call from the phone shop to clarify my options.

Pretty much. The trend is to hate on apple, why aren't you playing along?!

Everything about my I4 has been a better experience, the best I've had on a mobile. Deathgrip issue and all.

I am not hating on Apple either, the iPhone 4 would be the BEST thing I have ever bought IF the phone functionality worked in the same manner my 3G worked.

Its doesn't though, the phone sucks.

I have three succinct points to make on the issue:

…Time for a reality check people. This is neither new nor critical.

What's not new is the red herring of talking about dropped bars when its about dropped calls.

Why do you assume that Steve Jobs will be at the press conference?

Why do you assume he's not? Personally I think it will be Forstall but obviously Jobs shares most of the limelight as the public face of Apple so I think it's an obvious assumption.

If you'd bothered to read the linked article, you'd have noticed the point was that the dropped bars did not equal a proportional drop in data rates, which can safely be extrapolated to meaning no dropped calls either.

This could be really bad for people.

People experiencing reception issues, desperate for a fix are going to jump all over this update.

Apple is notorious for breaking things when updating software. Early adopters get screwed all the time by Apple's "fixes." This update could piss a lot more people off.

Does it really though? I always hold the phone in my left hand and I subconsciously avoid the signal attenuation. I cradle the phone with my pinky underneath the phone, which in turn allows my thumb more mobility, that a deathgrip wouldn't allow. In fact, I frequently did that with my 3G as well.

I can respect that some may not be able to hold it that way, but the sheer outrage from this seems overplayed to me.

Maybe Apple could make my iPhone 3G usable again... That'd be nice.

Except when I do this, I can't get any data transmission. Any. Zero. Which means if I'm not on wifi, I have to set the phone down, and wait 20 seconds and reload.

I haven't yet had any dropped phone calls. I have had my ear somehow hit the mute and hold button several times, and a front camera that will not work at all, causing my phone to freeze even after a clean restore - which means no facetime, unless other people want to see a black screen.

While I'm still here, bring 3G service to Kalamazoo and maybe I could load those web pages a little faster.

Thx.

The fact that it seems to impact data worse than it does voice implies that it may in fact be mitigated by software. Something that the phone is doing with data is different than what it is doing with voice - and they have made a big fuss about how on AT&T you can use data AND voice on 3g simultaneously, so there is *something* going on in software that impacts this.

I still think that the bridging of the antennas is causing the software to get confused in some way.

It is harder for me to test the data issue because my data is already wonky because I am in one of the Alcatel/Lucent AT&T areas...

Also, if your camera doesn't work - return the phone.

My phone seems to be working fine.... the signal is just as ****** as it was on my 3GS. I mean, sure, I'm using a case with my iPhone 4 and it can hold a call for over an hour. Yup, talking for over an hour without any problems at all. I'm loving my iPhone 4 and had 2 Verizon loving friends jump ship onto the new iPhone 4 and they are happy with it and the calls. I'm really sorry for those of you having real problems with your phone and signal. But, I can't complain because mine is working fine. I can't replicate the signal loss issue that everyone is yapping about. I don't think they will recall the phone at all.

I'm sticking with my iPhone 4.:apple:

running 4.1 on my phone actually increased the dropped calls I experienced.... so hopefully the official 4.0.1 is better....

can a software update increase the proximity sensor sensitivity?? i'm assuming it can. don't know really. i only had my first issue with it this morning, but i was pulling the phone away from my ear a little bit and it turned back on. my problem was putting it back to my ear, it took a while to shut back off. that is when i put it on speaker with my cheek. i hope they can fix that with a software update. seems easy enough.

Yes it can. All hardware on a computer/device can be controlled with software. Whether or not apple will change the sensitivity is another issue.

I'll test the 4.1 beta and report (although I haven't really experienced proximity sensor issues)

It can potentially if the hardware supports the changes.....kinda like you adjust the brightness of the screen. In the background it is giving it a different value? so potentially any piece of equipment can be reconfigured for sensitivity depending on the original hardware.

"While the software update obviously does not and cannot address the design of the antenna itself - or make the drop from holding the phone any less - it does change the way the issue is perceived among users. The result is that most iPhone users will see fewer bars disappear when they hold the iPhone 4 in a bare hand. The side effect is that the iPhone now displays fewer bars in most places, and users that haven’t been reporting signal in dBm will time see the - perhaps a bit shocking - reality of locations previously denoted as having excellent signal.

Interestingly enough, Apple has indeed changed the heights of bars 1, 2, and 3. They’re taller, and the result is that the relative heights are no longer linear, but rather a tad exponential looking. It’s a mind trick that Apple no doubt hopes will make the signal look better. If the bars are taller, they must denote stronger signal, right?"

Apple is notorious for breaking things when updating software.

Almost every other company/group that write operating systems is exactly the same, so how does that make Apple "notorious"?

The only way not to break things is if they never upgraded/fix anything.
Would you be happy if we were still running iPhone OS 1?

and yes...

Even "bug fixes" require low level library changes that can adversely affect 3rd party code.

You appear to have missed the entire point. I don't care how many bars you display, 1? 5? 4? If holding the phone in that spot causes calls to drop then there is a problem. The other phones are on AT&T's network and never drop calls in or around my office. The iphone 4 drops calls when held with the death grip in and around my office. How hard is that to understand?

...
My reply was simply addressing the fact that the phones in and around your office show five bars, and that this info can be misleading due to the simple fact that the formula might be wrong. It's not an explanation, nor excuse for dropped calls [on your iPhone 4]. That's all to it.

Now download iOS 4.0.1 and let me know how things are for you ;)

p.s. Here ya go. Just like I said yesterday :D

iOS 4.01 is now available for download

I am downloading as we speak [type].

Just check for an update in iTunes!

4.0.1 is LIVE!

Not sure if I want to update. I half wonder if it will make my reception issue worse. I think I'm going to wait until the details of the Apple press conference tomorrow are more clear.

downloading it too! Plz let it fix this problem!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
