I completely agree. Apple UI and graphics are always so elegant and sophisticated. This new Game Center design is super tacky and cheap looking. I hope it evolves yet again into something more Apple-like.

I think it looks pretty good, except for the selected button state, odd! I like it a LOT better than the old one that is for sure!

P.S. I can't seem to find where we can program words into the dictionary for typing in settings. Can someone tell me where that is?

Thanks :)

I actually hadn't noticed before, but indeed they do this already! Nice feature... :D

They change orientation, but currently the buttons stay in their current position and just rotate. This update will make the buttons move to different locations on the screen when you rotate the device.

hopefully the fix the bugs in the photo app

-deleted photos show up as black squares
-new photos don't show up
(i've found both are fixed if you quit the photo app from the multitask bar and then reopen)
-sync issues where photo cache corrupts and you have to recreate the cache

The REAL story of 4.1 is the change in update pattern.

The real story behind IOS 4.1 is that Apple is changing its update pattern. It used to be that they would release the X.0, then a few minor bumps, then announce the X.1 update as the "big fall release!"

This is the quickest x.1 release, and from the looks of it, the least feature packed.

Wait a minute, what? Game Center is an app?? I thought GameCenter was a collection of services and APIs that developers could use within their app, and that they would have control over the look of that (to match their game). This does look tacky and I'm now confused as to just what GameCenter is.

camera icons and buttons always changed to landscape for me?

+1

Me too

i've also noticed on a 3GS, with ios4 the camera takes a long time to load..
also hope they take a look at some audio issues..

Does the iPhone 4 have screen orientation lock? If so, how do you do it?
And also, I know your suppose to be able to play YouTube videos inside the browser like on the iPad but mine still takes me out of it? Is this an option to turn on?
Hopefully 4.1 will address that because I know a few people who can and cannot.
And yes, game center looks real cheap, hope it changes

For the screen orientation lock, double tap the home button to bring up Multi-tasking and slide left for iPod controls, the button on the far left locks your screen :)

Questions for those of you who have the update installed...

Has anyone notice No change in bars after doing the 4.1 update?
Is there any way for sure to know if this affects your signal... positive or negatively?

I just switched from Verizon and so far I like my iPhone/AT&T service. I have 5 bars at work and 3-2 at home... fine. What Im afraid of is that at home I will be down to 1 - no bars at home and drop service? I really like to keep things the way they are but i guess the only way to do that is no upgrade.

I will be very upset if i loose reception in my house.

Chris

When are you dolts going to understand that the "bars" issue is a display problem ONLY. That is to say, if you're getting 5 bars at work, you're probably only getting 3 or 4, if you're getting 3 at home then it's probably 1 or 2; the thing to understand is if you're not dropping calls you aren't going to drop calls in those same areas.

I just want it to be faster. Like, a lot faster. I've only got a 3G, and the 4 isn't out in Canada yet. This is the first time in a long time where a new OS from Apple didn't make my older device BETTER. :/

I'll buy a 4 when it's out, but the way things are going, I think I'll be lucky to actually get one before september.

they have added game center to restrictions
also added developer settings

This update has absolutely no effect on your actual reception. It only changes how the bars are displayed. Although this has already been beaten to death on the internet, it bears repeating: the iOS4.1 update will not change your existing reception at all. If you are getting good reception, you will continue to get good reception. If you're getting poor reception, you will continue to get poor reception. The update will only show a (supposedly) more accurate number of bars based on your reception.

I sure hope that's clear enough.

What about sending pictures taken in portrait via email? Are they orientated correctly now?

How about sending an email from within an app when you have an IMAP configured? Does the email get stuck in the outbox?

None of that stuff happens to me now. I do have an issue with taking screenshots in landscape and it saves them in portrait.

They rotate and change position. Look:

camera-lighting-flash-20100607.jpg

I'm pretty sure they mean that they not only rotate (which they do already) but reorient themselves in the same corners, relative to where they are in portrait (ie when in landscape, the "switch camera" icon moves to the top right as opposed to staying in place and just rotating.)

Since I'm writing in more than one language, I would have loved to see some kind of switch for auto-correction. I like the feature and want to use it, but as soon as I start writing in another language, it screws up my text.

Anyone think this will change?

edit: Just realized that the Switch already is implemented. >_>

Any word on whether orientation can be locked in the horizontal position? Vertical only is a bit silly.

It's already possible to lock in landscape position in iOS 4. I don't think it's a feature, but rather a 'bug':

1 - Turn off your orientation lock;
2 - Enter an app, then turn the iPhone to landscape;
3 - When in landscape, exit the app;
4 - In the homescreen, lock your orientation;
5 - Enter the app again, and... 'voilá', locked in landscape.

This trick works in apps that save states, never tried it on other apps, but I presume it wouldn't work there.

I’m really glad about the FT favorites. I’ll use FT for free international calling... but having a favorite default to voice would risk big charges! I’d have to have remembered to hit the little blue “more” circle, or else left those friends off of my favorites. Now... problem solved.

As for Game Center.... weird. Polished and functional, no doubt. But weird.

That doesn't happen for me.

Thanks, I feel kind of I didn't notice that but I hardly swipe to left lol
