The new iOS 4.1 beta that was just released today to developers appears to include the signal bar changes that Apple had previously described:
To address the issue, Apple will be issuing a software update "within a few weeks" that will adjust how signal strength bars are calculated and displayed. The change will adopt a recently recommended formula from AT&T that will more accurately display actual signal strength at any given time. The update will also increase the size of the smaller bars (1, 2, and 3) to make them easier to see.

The new signal bars appear slightly taller than the previous ones, and presumably Apple's calculations regarding signal strength has been revised. No word on if people are having any actual signal improvements beyond the cosmetic changes.

I wonder if their just masking the issue with a GUI update?

Interested to see if the problem continues
 
You'll have fewer bars but they'll be taller so I guess its a wash as far as surface area goes. :rolleyes:
 
Well if Apple really believes that a signal display change is going to fool the techies, they have something else coming. While I don't expect the issues to magically go away, maybe they can tune the attenuation to drop less radio signal than before. Instead of the anandtech -24 they measured on average in some tests, it can go down to 15. While still not optimal, it could help those in weaker signal areas. Who knows. Just my guess.

Any proximity sensor updates? Bueller?
 
I really hope they have fixed the proximity sensor in this release. It is driving me insane !
 
modem firmware updated too 02.07.01 from 01.59.00
 
After installing 4.1, I gripped the phone as described by people with issues and it still dropped, although not as seemingly dramatic. I still haven't had too much of a decrease in speed or call reliability with the grip dating back to 4.0.

I haven't had any issues with the proximity sensor yet, but I've only made a few calls. I'll update with any more findings as I use it more.
 
Taller bars? Are you effing kidding me? What is happening at Apple?

Edit: I'm adding the taller bars comparison graphic here for people who won't see it buried in the later posts. I compared the 4.1 vs my 4.0 on my iPhone 4 in Photoshop and colored in the difference. The new 1st bar is twice as tall as the old one! Haha:

Oh I so hope so the signal problem is easy to get around, the Proximity sensor is such a P I T A and what amazes me the media haven't picked up on it, and as far as I'm concerned it's a much bigger problem

No, because despite the loud complaining a small but vocal minority, most people are happy with their iPhone 4.

There are always some dud units that need to be replaced. Funny enough, almost everyone had a case for their 3G/3GS but people on these boards act like it is a bad thing to buy a case. Had everyone bought a case, I doubt this would even be a story because it would have most likely masked the issue with the small number of defective units.

@japanime: It's probably the same formula that other handset makers have been using for years. People on AT&T with iPhones had been complaining of dropped calls when they they appeared to have service. It is possible that they were about to drop but the phone was displaying too high of a value.
