I just can't wrap my head around the notion that after 3+ years........Apple still haven't figured out how to properly "calculate" and display signal strength? Not just apple, but also AT&T which has how many decades of experience?

WTF

People, the calculation change is nothing but a GOOD thing. And the taller bars are silly of course.

Before, it was deceptively showing you more bars than it really should have. Go read the post over at AnandTech. By the time you were down to four out of five bars, you've already lost half of your signal. This change increases the resolution per bar, making them more meaningful to actually know how much signal you have.

They should be admonished for how they calculated bars before, which showed 5 bars way too often, not for the change. It's a choice they made to make it look like it had better reception. Other handset makers do the same thing, it sucks. I'd prefer actual signal to noise numbers.

The real test is when it's released or a major site has access to the beta and tests it. Not based on bars, but by actual radio strength. Too bad Apple removed the fieldtest.app.

really? you are blaming att for apples problem? just wow.

any how apple is really p.o.ing people.

Agreed. I've read on other sites people compaining on T-Mobile in Germany and I think the other one was O2 in another country. The antenna issue just isn't AT&T, although I doubt that they help the matter.

"Interestingly, Apple made the speaker icon twice its original size as people were complaining that it was difficult to hear some conversations."

So now it's a waiting game to see if it works. I have a feeling that even if it does work a lot of people will still not be happy without a recall.

Perhaps in future apple will open up their communication a little better so that rumour and speculation that drives interest in upcoming products doesn't hurt the existing ones through misinformation and sensationalism.

This board still amazes me. People are complaining about this?

This is a GOOD thing. Apple's been lying to us with their bars for years. They're finally going to start telling us the truth about the signal we have. That's GOOD.

But people are complaining because it doesn't fix the hardware flaws? Guess what, it doesn't make burritos either! Or walk your dog!

So? It's still a positive change, even if it doesn't fix all your problems.

Yeah, and a lot of people are starting to wonder this: Why exactly did Apple remove the hidden fieldtest mode anyway?

Time for the conspiracy theories...lol.

Oh I so hope so the signal problem is easy to get around, the Proximity sensor is such a P I T A and what amazes me the media haven't picked up on it, and as far as I'm concerned it's a much bigger problem

What's going on with the proximity sensor? I use bluetooth 24/7, in my Infiniti (the 2010 models FINALLY support full contacts and address book syncing) and my stereo bluetooth headset (for those interested Sony makes a great A2DP headset, and I've tried Motorola JayBird models). I haven't used the phone much to make use of the sensor.

If this is another issue, than Apple truly needs to recall these handsets. They have BILLIONS, I'm certain a recall would be a tear in a salty sea for them and it would demonstrate their ability to admit a product fault.

Apple never ONCE said that this software update was a "fix" for the antenna issue. It was people on here to who made the assumption based on the timing of the announcement that there was an "issue" with the formula the iPhone had been using to calculate signal strength. It was never addressed as a fix for the physical touching of the device and the signal dropping.

People have set themselves up for a MASSIVE amount of disappointment that will subject the users of this forum to another month of moaning and "Apple are liars"! nonsense.

Apple's display of bars can take a flying leap. I want my -dBm back and field test mode back.

Damnit, I want IOS 4 on my original iPhone too so I can get dropped calls too!

(bad joke)

How dare you leave me out Apple? LOL

PS: As an original iPhone purchaser, I have to admit I'm popping popcorn and enjoying this.

It's on Consumer Reports, CBS News, pretty much every news channel.

Massive calls for a total recall of the device now.

Shhh! The haters don't want to hear a logical response!

Making the bars taller is being completely honest and good? Seems somewhat shady if you ask me. Which you didn't. But come on, it doesn't seem completely honest either.

Now when we have one little stubby bar, it will at least look like there is signal, even though the connection is likely in the crapper.

Ok, so can someone that already posted that they have the issue, and has access to the beta os, install it and simply tells us if it significantly helps or not. I don't see how any other comments are useful right now, including my own.
