Or as a study 3 years ago determined that 80%+ of people tend to exaggerate their claims to expand their ego and importance of claims made. Are you one of them? BTW its human nature to exaggerate....

Ok Prynce, if you want me to provide evidence just say the word... Why do people like to get personal? It's an effing product that has an effing problem. I dont make it or sell it, so why attack me.

FYI, no I am not exaggerating - i have no need to, I dont care about my ego or how important i look to you. I've got a problem with my new iPhone - it needs sorting.

The question is not can you reproduce the issue; all phones are clearly affected. This issue is "does it affect you in real world usage"? These are two distinct, separate things, and there's no need to conflate the two. I can time out my data connection by placing my hand along the black strip. Is there any circumstance where I would consciously place my finger across the black strip when actually using it? No.

If you commonly hold your phone "firmly, not too tight" in your left hand when using data as you describe, then I can imagine your frustration. I'm a fellow left hand holder, and don't.

Denying that it is simply not a real world problem for most people is as silly as denying their is an issue in the first place. Not saying that's what you're doing, but at this point, many/most of the antenna complainers are. Everybody needs to take a step back on the rhetoric, imo.

So holding the phone in my left hand is not a real world scenario??? Go figure

No, because despite the loud complaining a small but vocal minority, most people are happy with their iPhone 4.

The number of complaining users is not relative - the severity of the problem is.

Most users were happy with their Toyota also.

[Update 7] – Twitter user @alchemistmuffin reports iOS 4.1 (Beta 1) includes a “new type of encryption” which allows Apple to check if a device has been jailbroken. He explains below …

Also, iOS 4.1 has new encryption technology, that will constantly check if iPhone or iPod touch, have been jailbroken. This is done by digital watermark that appears when iOS is jailbroken, and this watermark cannot be removed, even if reverted to unjailbroken status. Apple store employees will check for the watermark during iPhone service.

The only problem I have experienced is the antenna issue but I can't duplicate this everywhere. I can only duplicate it at certain locations. I have absolutely no problems with the bumper case on it.

I think this update is mainly to address the randomly dropped calls issue some people are having. I know the antenna can cause dropped calls as well but some people, including Walt Mossberg, have been getting dropped calls without bridging the two antennas on the bottom left side of the phone. Mossberg mentioned this in his review of the device. He also mentioned that Apple would be releasing a software update to address the problem.

Wasn't there a report just released that showed that it was the drivers hitting the gas and not the brake that was causing the issue?

See the DOT report today by any chance? Mass media hype was the driver behind the Toyota 'problem' too.

Of course, when 'place in neutral, steer safely to side of road, shut off key' was suggested to those morons we were shouted down and called Toyota fanboys too.

Because there is a HUGE difference between the phone having a design issue and it actually affecting me. If it has no effect then it's not a problem. If the 4 works better than my 3G then I don't care about attenuation.

Plus I still think AT&T is doing something funky. I've had issues where I'm within 100 yards of an ATT tower and I cannot place a call. It's like the phone insists on connecting to some other tower someplace and not this nice shiny one nearby. I've now had this happy in proximity of 2 towers.

It's good that you're still clinging to the hope that somehow AT&T is to blame for this.

Ignoring the fact that Consumer Reports tested the phone in a radio test chamber where no towers are involved, and the iPhone 4 exhibited the antenna flaw on all 3 units they tested.

Taller Bars!
This is insanely awesome!
This changes everything. Again.

Couldn't agree more fellow fanboy!! These trolls need to STHU and go away! I bet they all use Windows!

The bigger bars look so delicious and the new super elegant UI. As you mention, this changes everything again. There's no way crappy Android or clunky Blackberry can keep up with this!

And to top it off, we got 5 insanely great flashlight apps!!! Wooo Hooo, I love Steve!! I'm skating to where the puck is going to be now!! I can't wait till my new iPhone can actually make phone calls too!! I know Steve will get it fixed in a few months!!!!

This board still amazes me. People are complaining about this?

This is a GOOD thing. Apple's been lying to us with their bars for years. They're finally going to start telling us the truth about the signal we have. That's GOOD.

But people are complaining because it doesn't fix the hardware flaws? Guess what, it doesn't make burritos either! Or walk your dog!

So? It's still a positive change, even if it doesn't fix all your problems.

This board should be called MacRumors:Complaining Section.
Unless the news is "Steve Jobs Saves 10000000 Babies From Getting Killed by Terrorists" or something of that nature, people are always going to find a way to complain... or maybe even in that situation. "Where was steve when 9000000000000 babies got killed by terrorists huh!?!? WHAT A JERK!"

proximity sensor

Well if Apple really believes that a signal display change is going to fool the techies, they have something else coming. While I don't expect the issues to magically go away, maybe they can tune the attenuation to drop less radio signal than before. Instead of the anandtech -24 they measured on average in some tests, it can go down to 15. While still not optimal, it could help those in weaker signal areas. Who knows. Just my guess.

Any proximity sensor updates? Bueller?

I just had to have my iphone4 replaced by apple because of the proximity sensor! They told me that it was a hardware issue and only fix was to replace it!

iOS 4.1 not available in Australia

Interesting that when I check for update it says 4.0 is the current version. In Australia on 3GS. Is 4.1 only for iPhone 4? Or US only?

If modem firmware was updated to 02.07.01 from 01.59.00 it's more than just bars.

That is exactly what I was thinking! I'm not saying there won't be any problems, but I'm sure they are doing EVERYTHING and ANYTHING they can with software and firmware so as to avoid hardware corrections or a recall or something! I mean DUH!

So let me get this straight.....now that the iPhone 4 has one of the best screens on the market they feel that they need to make the bars easier to read???? Doesn't make sense to me. Nor does releasing bumpers to cover up the beautiful design of the antennas. You gotta believe that apple knew about it and figured they would release a 'case' for the phone. Did they release cases when the other iPhones were released?

LOL. I'm thinking this new "formula" for showing bars basically amounts to show "all full signal" bars any time there is a signal to be found at all. Thus, it'll look like you have a great signal right up until the moment it fails. If you have noticed, OSX proper is already like that for Wi-Fi. It'll show a strength meter in the menu bar until you click on that network and then somehow magically a 1 or 2 bar network becomes full strength! I'm sure Apple would say once connected, having all the bars filled simply indicates a valid connection or something, not the current signal strength because it never drops until the whole connection is lost. I'm betting despite Apple and AT&T's claims, THAT is how they think their new signal should read most of the time.

The number of complaining users is not relative - the severity of the problem is.

Most users were happy with their Toyota also.

And lo and behold, it turned out that there is a good chance the acceleration problem was user error in the vast majority of cases:

http://www.cbc.ca/money/story/2010/07/14/con-toyota-report.html

So, while Toyota did have SOME problems it wasn't the massive issue it was made out to be.

As for the iPhone 4, the "defect" is that if you use the phone in an area with crappy reception and you put your hand over where the antenna is, it can be slightly crappier, such that AT WORST its as good as the 3G would be in the same situation. In most cases the phone performs BETTER. Further, if Apple hadn't screwed up their signal display algorithm in the first place, it wouldn't have been noticeable at all because you allready would have been down to 1-2 bars instead of in the 4-5 range!

The only problem here is one that is caused by the laws of physics and FCC regulations on where the antenna can be placed. Putting your hand in between the antenna and the signal will harm reception, just like it would do on ALL PHONES.

What do you want apple to do to fix this? Re-write the laws of physics? Get the FCC to allow them to use more powerful antennas placed in different areas? How about those pull out antennas phones used to have, would you like those instead?

Right on my man. Why don't these poor folks return the phone, get their money back and never post here again. Get themselves a droid and life will be perfect and no need to every cry again. Me, I am happy as a pig in mud with my iP4.
If reading about problems people are having with the IP4 bothers you so much, maybe you shouldn't read MR threads about IP4 problems. Attacking people who are having problems with defective phones because it seems to annoy you is juvenile.

I am in litterally shock... There were two ways apple could try to deal with this issue

A) admit u ****ed up, do a recall on defective devices and fix the hardware issue once and for all so nobody can poke fun of or complaine once it's all said and done with. You will look bad for a few months bit rectify the problem and move on, people will forget and want to buy the phone because they know it works an everyone is happy... They will more than make up the money again once it's fixed...

B) keep pretending people are retarded and issue a software fix. Not only are they admitting that the ip4 signal falls uunlike any other phone on the market BUT they are now making the signal bars bigger and "more accurate" (after 3 years of using the wrong algorithm???)

and have the balls to think that because it will show ur signal weaker but with bigger bars you will be ok with the call dropping more cause you only had 3 bars at the beginning of the call...

This blows my mind, do a recall it's the only way to get through this without destroying future sales for ip4
