For Apple TV owners great

iOS 4.2 was long overdue on the iPad so it's more a case of 'FINALLY!!!' than anything else. It does make the iPad much better to use.

Airprint - A disaster. Why launch a feature that only works with SOME HP printers? Stupid.

Airplay - Now this is a killer addition. Firstly it works brilliantly - I can look at my pictures from my iPhone / iPad on my Apple TV quickly. Very nice. Even better streaming music to the Apple TV is fantastic because the optical out is hooked up to my HiFI / Home Cinema - so music on your iPhone can instantly fill a room without any docking station. Very nice.

Better still when I was watching YouTube clips the video could be instantly streamed to my Apple TV. And even Audio within web pages could be streamed. So I can listen to soundcloud music through my sound system via the Apple TV.

So great if you own a new Apple TV.

I am waiting to see if the update has fixed the proximity sensor issue which I think affects almost all iPhone 4 users.

Airplay

does anyone know if airplay works with multiple devices at the same time?

i.e. can i stream to an apple tv and airport express simultaneously?

so you have a 3gs right? and you want to access free find my iphone? have an ipad?

create and verify your new account from your ipad (or findmyiphone for free capable device)

then enter your mobile me account details on your iphone 3GS, and there you go, Find my iphone for free on your 3GS.

Edit: d'oh just read this last bit in the news post (should learn to read)

so I send video I have put on my phone from iTunes to my ATV, but can't play things I recorded on my phone myself, to my ATV

That is RUBBISH

shame - was the only real use for it really..!

Also the new SMS tones are *****

It's a patent issue. HP deployments are massive. Apple should [and did] release it to show the functionality and work towards the next .x.x update to either 1). amicably work a deal with HP,or 2). modify their implementation and extend the functionality to 3rd party printers.

I'm betting on solution 2 as the license fees never work out to make it not worth the effort to just modify the implementation and bypass it all together.

so i can only stream to one airplay device at a time? Suddenly not as impressed!!

Thought it would be like iTunes and i could control a different devices in different rooms.

Yeah we were all hopping for that, and for the ability in general to share everything on the idevice to any other device on the network, whether a computer or another idevice. Sadly that hasn't been enabled either. Who knows, maybe with time they will add that functionality in like they did with Facetime (would be at least one nice feature to add into Lion so perhaps it is worth their waiting).

Very pleased to see the update to Keynote.

But where is iMovie for the iPad? I was really hoping that app would be made available, too.

We'll likely see some third-party app allow this, or at worst, the jailbreak community allow it in the same way they ignored Facetime not being supposed to work on 3G. We just need a little patience.

So for iPod Touch owners, you need a 4th Gen Touch to set up the 'find my ipod', but after that you could do it on your 3rd Gen or older Touch? That makes no sense why that's possible...

I'm guessing I could just go to the Apple Store and set it up on a 4th Gen Touch in store, then delete my account info from it and active it on my 3rd Gen at home.

I was hoping I could do this remotely and send the ******* messages that stole my 2nd Gen touch constantly just to annoy the hell out of them...

Airplay has so much potential, looks like Apple are doing what they always do and drip feeding us the features. When the next iOS update comes out we can all rave about that for having all the stuff this update lacks.

They already cranked the proximity sensor up to the max in 4.1. I don't think there's much more they can do until the next hardware revision (iPhone 5).

These are some really cool features makes me wish the iPhone was on my carrier of choice (rather not start a war), even though I like Android there is just something slick about how Apple integrates everything so well. And I am betting we will see tons of wireless speakers for iPods now like all the dock connectors, wonder what the audio quality is like or if it is degraded at all.

Yep, that sure does sound like them, but there is probably a lot of restrictions involved from Carriers and TV Networks.

That's going to depend on the speakers in question not on anything Apple does. Airplay sends the full unmixed digital signal (I've already received DD 5.1 signals through it). So the limiter is your sound system.

I've heard this too but where's the source? Also, thank goodness for Printopia/AirPrint Hacktivator if this is true.

The only supposed HP patent I've seen clearly isn't applicable - the claims require that the driver be sent to the mobile device over-the-air.

Ok people if you have a 'OLD" device...go to the apple store and create the account on their Iphone 4 or Ipad....and then you will have findmyiphone on your 'OLD' iOS device.

iPhone3 brick'd by 4.2 (sorta)

I have an iPhone3 (no phone service) and iPhone4 (with phone service). Updated the iPhone3 and now cannot more past the "no sim card installed" on the phone. iTunes says I have to insert a sim card to activate the phone. But I don't want to activate the phone. Only option in iTunes is Eject. Just want to keep using it like an iPod. Anyone else seen this?
