Airprint for all of you...

Enable Airprint without changing system files!

Source: http://www.lisanet.de/?p=71 (german)

Just by adding the mime type urf. It seems that all printer send out a preview in pdf as urf. As the mac printer system is build up on pdf, these files enable Airprint. Therefore no drivers are necessary.

Just ad "image/urf urf (0,UNIRAST<00>)" in /usr/share/cups/mime

Don't forget a restart, then delete and re-add the printers in system references.

Wow

I daresay Airplay and AirPrint are or will be awesome. And folders are useful too. Multitasking? Well, it's a little early to evaluate.

But I wanted to note that 4.2 has changed iPad experience beyond what i thought was possible - in a good way. I don't care if this has been posted multiple times: Safari is like a new app entirely. I just browsed for 45 mins with multiple tabs open and had *not one single page refresh*; it's hard to overstate how annoying it was before to have *everything* reload when coming back to a previously-opened page. I'm ridiculously happy about this.

And when I looked at the pages button another delight - the number of open pages is displayed like in the iPhone! I even requested that one from the mothership!

Very disappointed in AirPlay

Overall I'm pretty happy with 4.2... AirPlay is awesome... and there are some other little things in it that I like... however the biggest disappointment is AirPrint... Apparently my 2 year old HP multi-function is not new enough to be supported with AirPrint... now granted I didn't look very hard because I got discouraged quickly, but from what I saw most of the "supported" printers for AirPrint do not get good user reviews, mainly due to printing quality...

Seems like Apple really shanked one into the deep woods on AirPrint...

Can AirPlay be initiated from a Mac?

I am interested in dropping my cable TV service and going with iTunes for TV shows. A lot of shows that we watch are not available for rent from the AppleTV2, but they are available for purchase (individual episodes or season passes) from the iTunes store. AppleTV2 cannot access this content directly, but these shows can be purchased from iTunes running on a Mac and downloaded into the iTunes library. I used to have to connect my Mac to the TV in order to play these shows, but now that AirPlay is out, I am hoping I can utilize AirPlay for this. So, once I purchase an episode from the iTunes store and it gets downloaded into my Mac's iTunes library, can I stream this episode to the AppleTV2 via AirPlay? I have the latest iTunes and I have just upgraded the iOS on my AppleTV2.

Thanks.

Has anyone else noticed the easier-to-read default font in Notes on the iPod?

Yes it works.

There are a whole bunch of free Apps that'll enable your printer for Airprint. I think one is called something like "Airprint hactivate" or something. Just google it.

Folders? Revolutionary. Imagine what all you could do with that. Imagine the future ..... folders .... within ..... folders, and within ..... folders. Pure genius.

AirPlay Intermittent

I have noticed intermittent functionality with AirPlay, specifically with streaming music. I have an airport extreme with three airport express in support and a new appleTV, movies and photos stream well but the Airplay icon doesn't always appear when playing music. Thoughts?

If you purchase a show/movie via iTunes on your mac -- go to 'Computers' on your ATV2 and select your iTunes and go to you show. Airtunes is not needed. You'll select your show there. I do wish on the ATV2 you could purchase a show that is downloaded to your Mac's iTunes.

1. Upgraded iPhone and iPad to 4.2 last night.

2. Synced iPad with MacBook Pro.

3. Deleted all music from the iPad to free up space for movies)

This morning I found ALL 3,000 songs on my iPhone GONE.

The iPhone was on the same wireless network but was in another room when all this synching was going on between iPad and MacBook which were linked by cable!

Am I to assume that 4.2 synchs every 4.2 device wirelessly without being asked?

iOS 4.2.1 jailbroken

Hi ppl, one thing I can't understand, iOS 4.2.1 has been jailbroken and there is no mention of this neither on macrumors.com and neither on appleinsider.com

why is this? Engadget reported this straightaway...why not macrumors.com ?

Thanks
Darren

Thanks for this answer. I completely overlooked the capability to stream the TV show that is already in the Mac's iTunes library to the AppleTV2. I knew about it, but somehow it slipped my mind.

I have another question. The TV shows that are available for purchase from iTunes are not directly available from the AppleTV2. Can these shows be purchased from an iOS device (iPhone or iPad) and then sent to the AppleTV2 via AirPlay? If it is possible, is this going to be an SD version or an HD version of the show?

Yes you can. I've purchased a show from iPhone 4. If you purchase HD, it will (I'm pretty sure) download the SD to your iPhone 4 and it could Airplay to your ATV2. Later when you synch to iTunes, it will copy your SD version and will download the HD version to iTunes. I never purchase HD versions, as I simply don't care.

Sluggish WIFI

After installing 4.2 on iPad, I noticed that WIFI response was sluggish. It took Mail a while to download a few messages and made the iPad unresponsive. Safari, too, is significantly slower than before.

Since I've installed ATV2 several weeks ago, my wifi is sometimes painfully slow. I will go unplug the ATV2 to correct. After installing 4.2 was hoping this would go away. It did not, happened last night after installing 4.2. Something is wrong. I suspect the ATV2 is constantly 'searching/thinking' on the network and zapping bandwidth.

It sends the file you downloaded, SD if SD, HD if HD.

I've only skimmed the 9 pages of posts, so my apologies: but does anyone have any intel on

(1) why AirPrint support thru a Mac was removed, considering how easy it is to apparently re-activate it?

(2) why there are eligible devices for the free "find my iphone function"?

Those two things didn't make sense to me but I guess there must be some explanation.

Heck, while I'm at it, (3), why does the iPad and iTouch come with a video app but the iPhone does not?
