Who can confirm what we probably already know? It is the 4.2.1 version released last Friday, right?

The file name of the update released on iTunes is the same as the 4.2.1 GM seed from Friday (with the same build number).

So it does look that way.

Are the people who jailbreak the same ones who trick out their Hondas with intercoolers or put erector set spoilers on their Subarus. Let me guess, you wear TapOut hats exclusively.

I jailbreak for one reason and one reason only: BiteSMS. I've submitted feedback to Apple that it's the way I think the SMS app *should* work, but in the absence of any update, I jailbreak.

No Tapout or Affliction over here.

p.s. Hondas and Subarus are great project cars, and there's a lot of really cool stuff that can be done with them that doesn't look completely dumb. ;)

Is the update being offered as version 4.2.1 or as version 4.2?

Just wondering because I have the beta 4.2 on my iPad and iTunes says there is no new version.

Same here. I am betting this is an undesirable side effect of having loaded 4.2 on my iPad.

iTunes keeps acting like it expects my ipsw to already be there.. but it can't find it.

"There was a problem downloading the software for the iPad "myipad". The requested resource was not found."

you bastards, almost an hour to download the update

why is everyone trying to get it?

It must be where you are at or what data center (server) your downloading from.

Apple TV

The Apple TV update is still not out though which makes this update almost useless to me. Ive had 4.2 on my ipad and iphone for weeks now. THey better not delay the apple tv update for weeks on end. I will die in anticipation.

I wonderful if after I update my 3GS it will help with reception issues. Ever since the first ios4 update, I haven't been able to use my phone from inside my house (in San Francisco). Before the update and with every other phone i have had over the past ten years, reception was perfect. I've been on many calls with ATT iPhone tech support with no luck. Changed sim cards. re booted, re set and so on. My friends with non iPhones talk perfectly from my house.

Oh well...

No!

People who jailbreak are people who want their iPhone to do what it CAN do, not what Steve WANTS it to do!

Download update without connecting ipad/iphone?

I have my iphone with me at work and my ipad isn't connected to my mac, but I can connect to my mac at home remotely. Is there anyway I can initiate the download so it's ready when I get home without first connecting the device? Any little hack/trick to get this accomplished?

Favorite feature: you can now search within a web page. I think I like that even better than folders!

People who jailbreak are people who want their iPhone to do what it CAN do, not what Steve WANTS it to do!

Much less true in the last year, since the most-missed things “Steve didn’t want” have been added by Apple: added once they were finally ready and working well. (Because of course, Apple did want them.)

The main remaining reasons for people to jailbreak are (in no order):

a) piracy

b) some specific minor things that only a few people want (are they worth all the hassle and potential problems and extra time spent? those issues ARE real)

c) someone telling someone else they should want it (vague buzzwords are useful for this)

d) the sheer hobby value of modding your expensive gear!

Of those reasons, I can most appreciate the last! One of these days I’ll jailbreak my old iPhone for that very reason. But not the one I depend on daily, for sure.

I don’t object to jailbreaking (only to piracy), but I also have to honestly admit that the benefit of it, vs. the potential penalties, are way too small for most of the users on the planet to bother. (And I do object to the occasionally-heard idea that Apple should spend time/money supporting jailbreakers and testing to make sure updates work for them. That would slow development of the OS and would be a losing battle.)

SIMPLE QUESTIONS BEFORE UPDATING:

1 - Is battery life affected?

2 - Is multitasking exactly the same as iPhone 4?

3 - Has Safari stopped reloading every page when moving between them?
