just finished downloading it and it is installing now... the file name is iPhone3,1_4.2.1_8C148_Restore.ipsw

That was the iOS 4.2.1 GM seed's build number from last week.

It's likely that they just renamed it to 4.2

Nope; I've completed the download and installation and I'm up and running. It's 4.2.1 (8C148) as per my About screen in Settings.
 
It seems that in the prerelease, there was an update to 4.2, called 4.2.1, but to simply things, now that the "official release" is out, on your phone the final version will be called simply 4.2. However, the file name includes 4.2.1.



13 min to go here in Italy, although things suddenly slowed down.
