Just read the Apple press release.

Disappointing:

"*The free Find My iPhone feature is available for iPhone 4, iPad or new iPod touch (4th generation)."

Isn't this going to drive you to rush out and upgrade your iPhone 3G or 3GS to a new iPhone 4?

I'm already phoning around every store within a 100 mile radius to try and get my hands on a new phone. Really I am. I need my free Find My iPhone!!!

Just renewed Mobile Me Family Pack!

Seriously, Find my iPhone is now free! That's the main reason I just renewed my Mobile Me family pack (less than two weeks ago).... arggh!

The "find my iPhone" feature was the one thing that was tempting me to buy mobileme. I'm extremely happy that it's coming for free. Plus I can't wait to bring multitasking to my iPad. Long time coming! :)

So three pages and no one has pointed out that the 2nd gen touch shown at the bottom of the page now shows it with home screen backgrounds?

(Meanwhile the 3G shows the standard black background still)

Funny all this talk of not supporting iPhone 3G. The strange thing is that my iPad has felt '2nd Class' almost since I bought it. I bought my iPad about a month before the iPhone 4 and iOS4 releases. As soon as I got the iPhone 4 the iPad has seemed outdated because of not having the retina display, not having multi-tasking, also lots of apps still don't have iPad versions (the choice of blocky full screen or small area in the centre effectively makes apps unusable as far as I'm concerned). I hope that iOS 4.2 will finally make my iPad feel like it's worth having.

you can cancel any renewal of mobile me for 30 days after renewal... Try it under accounts page.

Why is FMi not available for the iP3G/3GS? It worked perfectly before on my iP3G when I had a full MM subscription.

I was personally thinking it was because there had to be *some* kind of background program running to support the feature--and the 3G (and less so, the 3GS) already is tight on memory. But, you bring up a good point that it was available paid before.

Perhaps for the paid people, the Mobile Me support is more likely to be their only email, etc.--and for the free users they'd be more likely to have another email account. Assuming the Mobile Me support is a separate app, maybe that's it.

Or, maybe I'm just looking too far into it and you all are right, they're just trying to sell more iPhone 4's. But come on, really? There's *so* many compelling reasons to upgrade, and you think they have to heap another feature on there (free Find My iPhone) to get people to buy it? Not to mention the work they had put in with 4.1 to get it to (finally!) work better on the 3G when they clearly didn't have to. The simplest solution--there's some sort of hardware constraint. Or, perhaps, there's a new chipset that is required or something.

People, stop whining and start reading!

footnote 3:
"You can create a free Find My iPhone account on any iPhone 4, iPad or iPod touch (4th generation) running iOS 4.2. Once you create an account on a qualifying device, use your Apple ID and password to enable Find My iPhone on your other devices running iOS 4.2. Find My iPhone is not available in all countries."

I think (hope) you just have to borrow a friends iPad/iPhone 4/iPod Touch 4G for a minute.

If true, this makes it even more ludicrous...

This is great news. I've always thought the Find My iPhone feature was a good one, but didn't want to pay for MobileMe.

Or maybe foreshadowing the future of MM as a free service for all?

Somehow I don't see Apple giving up any revenue streams.

Then again, I ordered my renewal off Amazon last week fro $48 so they'll probably make it free.

Anyone got Find My iPhone working? I tried updating and reinstalling. But it still asks me for a MobileMe account. My expired account isn't working.

you'll need the software update, which hasn't been released on itunes yet. if i'm not mistaken.

MM is not devalued at all. No other smartphone has services that match this. Yea, Google has Gmail which gives you calendar and contacts syncing but I've never got it working on any device, Android included. It was buggy, laggy and frustrating.

Also, FMi shouldn't be and isn't available for older hardware although from a technical standpoint, they do support it. But the service being free comes from the revenue made by the device. The older models no longer generate revenue like the iPhone 4 and other new models. Apple can't offer this for free for all devices because of the cost. A portion of the cost of the device is support fees. The iPhone 3G is already almost out, the iPhne 3GS is heading in that direction. That's like asking for a product replacement once your warranty is out at the Genius Bar, excluding major defects like the battery recalls years ago and the faulty NVIDIA graphics cards. I hope you guys understand what I'm saying.

For iPhone 3G users, performance is much improved. I have my friend's 3G with me because I was replacing the cracked digitizer. I put the GM seed on there and performance is pretty fast and not laggy at all.

Don't you think Apple employs the device serial number? In such case they would limit it to just the desired generation of devices.

Well.. I think this line: "use your Apple ID and password to enable Find My iPhone on your other devices running iOS 4.2." can be explained in two ways....

"Enable 'Find my iPhone" on the other device running 4.2 so you can find your device" (Enable, as in: Use the service)
"Enable 'Find my iPhone" on the other device running 4.2 so you can find it too" (Enable, as in: register it for 'finding')

We'll see where it goes....

Well, since my iPhone is a 3GS and my iPad Wi-Fi only FMi isn't going to be a whole lot of use to me.

I was hoping that syncing of Contacts and Calendar were going to become free as they are the only fetaures of MM that I would really use and can't justify the annual fee just for that :(
