How would i enable the find my iphone feature? Can i just download the app and it will work or do i need anything additionally?

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8B117 Safari/6531.22.7)

Love the people criticizing the new free service. Love it.

Previously paid only feature, minimum $99 a year cost, is now suddenly free for customers who buy current generation products.

Staggering, but not at all surprising, that this isn't "good enough" for some of you.

Just to further clarify. People who haven't spent a dime on iOS in a year or more (ie: 3G, 3GS owners, non-Mobile me subscribers) are "outraged" at not being handed a free feature that they were never promised, or even expected.

Yep, THAT, is Macrumors.

Sadly, I agree.

Seriously, 4.2 is just announced for release today, and you are already asking for 4.2.1? What's the matter with you?

This release IS 4.2.1. He was asking because the second GM release last week was 4.2.1, but in all of the literature today, they still refer to it as 4.2. Something's the matter with you, not him. :D

I'm sorry, but what ?

The 3GS is currently sold. People are paying good money today for it. So with your justification, it's even more ludicrous that the 3GS isn't included. The fact is if the service is going to be free, it should be for all hardware. By your logic, it should be free only for new purchases of hardware, not for current owners of the iPhone 4.

Who's criticizing a free service ? I think the people who think this is negative are criticizing having to pay for what others are getting free, based on some kind of artificial hardware purchase limitation that has no bearing on the use of the service itself.

Yep, THAT, is Macrumors.

Yep, always someone to justify Apple in whatever they do, no matter how boneheaded or greedy it might be. THAT is MacRumors indeed.

What about the hardware justifies this ? I paid for my 3GS same as any iPhone 4 owner. Greed is all it is.

How is it greed? They are offering something free. Just not for everyone. That's like Starbucks offering a free drink for people with a gift card who register for an account on their site and you, who didn't meet those requirements, are moaning about it. Nothing about the hardware justifies this, but that is irrelevant.

Another good example is when you buy a Mac, but over a month later, a new version of iLife is out. Only people who bought that Mac at that time or later gets a free upgrade and you don't. You have the same hardware right? Even more outrageous then, since the 3GS and 4 are totally different hardware.

Oh, so your assumption is that he was using illegal copies of developer releases? Something's the matter with you, imagining people are using illegally copied software without the slightest evidence.

From the bottom of the new Apple Find My iPhone page:

http://www.apple.com/iphone/find-my-iphone-setup/

* Create a free Find My iPhone account on any iPhone 4, iPad, or iPod touch (4th generation) running iOS 4.2. Once you create an account on a qualifying device, use your Apple ID and password to enable Find My iPhone on your other devices running iOS 4.2. Find My iPhone is not available in all countries.

Looks like the second update to this article is right. You need to create a MobileMe ID on a current gen device, then you can use that ID on any other device you want, so long as it has iOS 4.2 or better installed.

Uh, iPhone 3GS and not being eligible for free Find my iPhone ? That's a blatant reason right there.

I respectfully disagree with you on this one. Not many companies, if any, support their old products forever. You gotta give more attention to the new models. Plus, it's not very clear at the moment if 3G and 3GS are or will carry the feature later.

Because with 4.2, the iPad's orientation lock switch becomes a mute. For a lot of people, this is a terrible, terrible idea.

You are very right on this one. Completely slipped my mind..

Same here. It keeps telling me my information is incorrect, yet when I check my iTunes account, it takes the username and password just fine.
I think you have to have the 4.2 upgrade first...or are you running the GM? Maybe you have to wait for the final product.

And most will welcome it operating like their iPhone does.

Again, would make sense if the 3GS was an old product. It's not. It is currently sold as a current product by Apple.

Unification is fine, but the iPad is a completely different device with different functions to an iPhone. I don't even have an iPhone.

Right, but still, If I had bought my 3GS only a couple of days ago (it is still on sale) I would definitely feel treated as a second class customer.

I think you have to have the 4.2 upgrade first...or are you running the GM? Maybe you have to wait for the final product.

Well I've been running 4.2.1 GM since last week. I guess we really won't know what's going on until it's actually released and installed on many devices today.

Looks like the second update to this article is right. You need to create a MobileMe ID on a current gen device, then you can use that ID on any other device you want, so long as it has iOS 4.2 or better installed.

Which will be a big problem when everybody finds out that creating a MobileMe account on a device locks that device to that account, meaning your friend is now out of his Find My iPhone free so you could get yours.

Another good example is when you buy a Mac, but over a month later, a new version of iLife is out. Only people who bought that Mac at that time or later gets a free upgrade and you don't. You have the same hardware right? Even more outrageous then, since the 3GS and 4 are totally different hardware.

All purchasers of Macs then get the new iLife version.

Again, if this was tied to current sales vs old sales, no argument. It's not. They still sell the 3GS and new owners of it aren't getting the service for free, while people who have had iPhone 4s for over 5 months or iPads for over 7 are getting it, contrary to iLife upgrades...

Your analogy doesn't even begin to apply. Keep apologising boys, Apple might throw you a bone for being in the "Apple does no wrong" camp.

I was so excited that Find my iPhone is now free...but I just realised I don't even have an iPhone lol. I has an iPad but it never leaves my house.

I've been running the 4.2 GM for a while now, it's a great update. Glad everyone can have it now :)

Because with 4.2, the iPad's orientation lock switch becomes a mute. For a lot of people, this is a terrible, terrible idea.

Didn't people say the exact same thing when it waas announced to be a mute switch but Apple turned it into a orientation lock? Btw, it's very easy to lock the screen, just double tap and swipe right. Brightness control, volume control and orientation lock. Having the orientation lock is very confusing... Most people expect a mute switch to be next to the volume buttons not an orientation lock.

This is seriously starting to make me angry:

I remember when I had the first iPhone and the iPhone 3G. Back than all the new features from software updates were available to all devices (except ones that required some sort of hardware support that the older model didn't have) but now Apple is not even giving us 3GS users features that our device could easily handle.
First they didn't give us HDR photography now they won't even give us Find My iPhone?? Why?
Also, why aren't they updating the old Apple TV to support audio AirPlay?
I am not asking for video AirPlay, because I understand that this is one of the bigger new features and possibly a reason for some people to go out and buy an Apple TV, but the old Apple TV had always supported AirTunes, so why won't it work with the iPhone?

Also, the Apple site says

I have 4.2.1 GM on my phone and there are no new text tones. Where are they? Are they iPhone 4 only?

The older ATV does support AirTunes. I think you can find it in AirPlay, but no video streaming. So you aren't losing any features. Wait for the actual release, I remember installing the 4.1 GM on my iPhone. It had no wallpapers.

I'm sorry, but what ?

You said you think is negative. That's criticism. Also, people pay MORE for the iPhone 4. About $100 more if you can do math.

Uh, iPhone 3GS and not being eligible for free Find my iPhone ? That's a blatant reason right there.

should only be on ipad and ip4 , we paid money for the upgrade for new hardware and this a gift to those people.

you don't upgrade....you don't get free features, enough said.

How would i set all of this up? I have no experience with mobile me or find my iphone

Find My iPhone still works with 3GS, you simply have to buy mobileme.

It makes sense. 3GS + MobileMe ≈ iPhone 4. (cost wise)

yes it's terrible for me as well, but why doesn't Apple provide an option that allows user to select? it's not too hard and I believe that it doesn't affect the OS stability.

I was faster ;)
