Very close as in 7 months from now.

The lengths some people will go to to justify Apple not having done any wrong is just ludicrous. It seems no matter how big my ignore list gets, there's always one or 2 more.

If this is what you think then you are far away from getting my point. Now please, do add me to your ignore list and do it quickly...

I can't comment on the value of MobileMe for its users but "Find My Phone" should never have been part of a paid service.

For the money we pay for the phone and contract, if they have the tech to do it, it should be part of the standard phone os.

Couldn't agree more. :)

Again for the more obtuse, iPhone 3GS is sold today. You can still give Apple 550$ smackers and get a iPhone 3GS, brand new, sealed in box.

But you PAY LESS. The iPhone 4 costs more! You're the obtuse one who can't accept the facts. 4 costs about $100 more than 3GS cost wise. Not that thats my explanation for why 3GS doesn't get the free feature. But using your argument, 4 costs more.

Nope, doesn't work. My Apple TV doesn't even show up on my iPhone, in iTunes it does.

Also, why would they include the new text alerts in the final version but not in the GM? I thought the GM was the final version!

GM is for developers. I doubt they care about what text alert tones are included and aren't.

You didn't lose any functionality then. AirTunes only worked between iTunes on computer and AirPort or ATV. Only the name changed, but it works exactly the way it did before. No functionality was removed.

yes it's terrible for me as well, but why doesn't Apple provide an option that allows user to select? it's not too hard and I believe that it doesn't affect the OS stability.

Confusion. If you're iPad was screen lock, and someone else's was mute, then it would be confusing. Mute switch makes sense from a hardware POV since it's above the volume buttons.

Find My iPhone still works with 3GS, you simply have to buy mobileme.

It makes sense. 3GS + MobileMe ≈ iPhone 4. (cost wise)

Agree.

should only be on ipad and ip4 , we paid money for the upgrade for new hardware and this a gift to those people.

you don't upgrade....you don't get free features, enough said.

Exactly, you pay more for new stuff.

But I think his point is if Apple still sell it, they should fully support it.

But the cost is much less. About $100 less. By your logic, we iPhone 4 owners should get free MM for a year since that costs $99 a year.

Find My iPhone only free for iPhone 4? No other phones? Talk about fragmentation.

Fragmentation only exists in hardware and software not matching up. In this case, one software feature that is paid for is now free. Hardly fragmentation.

The 3GS does everything it did the day you bought it. It's not a lack of support and it wasn't sold with the expectation of free Find My iPhone.

That 1000 times over.

This is what the 3GS crowd told use 3G users and now the 4 users are speaking the same to the 3GS. Turns out, next year your iPhone 4 will be in the exact same position. But you already knew that.

Apple should give us paying MobileMe subscribers an extra feature now, due to FMi service being opened up to everyone's grandma lol

That's some serious fragmentation going on with the iPhone's.

New feature not supported on a phone that's still being sold as new?

This better include the APple TV

Yeah, I hate when I lose my Apple TV, this will be great to help me find it ;)

Looking forward to the 4.2 update, but as always, I'm going to wait and see what everyone else thinks of it before I jump on board.

(And one of these days I'll upgrade to Snow Leopard, too... :p)

My uncle just brought in his iPad to have some music loaded (pretty cool device, btw)..
He is showing an update available, while my iPod Touch 2nd gen is not :(

not really, Starbucks gave everyone the chance, just some were to lazy to sign up, so they lose out. ALL iphone owners took the appropriate steps by buying hardware, (some apple care), and paying their service fees (although not to apple but that contract subsidizes the initial price of the phone).

I have found with apple, you pay a premium fee for their products. I don't mind, as i pay them, but like any high end retail store/ car dealer, there are certain "boutique" services you receive. FMIP is such a service, its piece of mind for people who spend this kind of money for phones, mp3 players, ipads, ill even throw in laptops (wouldn't that be cool to have it on a mbp!)
there is no reason NOT to allow all devices to use this service. the bandwidth is tiny (maybe not at first as everyone will use it today for example).

this is pure greed. its apples way to force an upgrade nothing more. especially for something a 10 year old cell phone could handle as well, how do you think the cops can track you, if you go missing or do something bad.

The cops are different and they use different technology than Find My iPhone. It's hardly the same as me trying to find my iPone that I lost.

Yes, but those boutique services only exist for new models. If you went in there with a car you bought more than a year ago, you wont receive the same benefits and services that someone who just bought their new 2011 model car today receives.

There is reason to not allow all devices for a free service. You already enjoyed support and software upgrades for your device. The portion of the device cost that is the support fee is already spent. Me on the other hand, I just got my device months ago and I have only begun to enjoy my support and software upgrades.

It's not greed, you just aren't given free stuff for older hardware. Perfectly acceptable and understandable. Unless you are greedy yourself.

The 3GS does everything it did the day you bought it. It's not a lack of support and it wasn't sold with the expectation of free Find My iPhone.

No but the point is that we didn't know it was going to be free for only iPhone 4 users. If 3GS users knew that beforehand then fine make your choice. The fact is that a current selling product, which up until a few months ago was the top of the range iPhone, is not being offered this service for free as well. IMO it stinks

I'm sorry, but what ?

http://store.apple.com/ca/configure/MC637C/A?mco=MTgxNTgyMjk

The 3GS is currently sold. People are paying good money today for it. So with your justification, it's even more ludicrous that the 3GS isn't included. The fact is if the service is going to be free, it should be for all hardware. By your logic, it should be free only for new purchases of hardware, not for current owners of the iPhone 4.

Who's criticizing a free service ? I think the people who think this is negative are criticizing having to pay for what others are getting free, based on some kind of artificial hardware purchase limitation that has no bearing on the use of the service itself.

Yep, always someone to justify Apple in whatever they do, no matter how boneheaded or greedy it might be. THAT is MacRumors indeed.

Offering free service for current generation customers. How greedy.

The 3GS is currently sold, yes, as Last Year's hardware at 50% the price of an iPhone 4 ($100 less). I know you feel that you deserve something equal to current customers who have paid Apple more for newer hardware, but sadly, you're wrong in this case.

The 3GS does everything it did the day you bought it. It's not a lack of support and it wasn't sold with the expectation of free Find My iPhone.

Would make sense if only new purchases of iPhone 4, iPod Touch 4th Gen and iPad were getting the service and not those that bought the hardware without the feature in the first place.

But you PAY LESS. The iPhone 4 costs more! You're the obtuse one who can't accept the facts. 4 costs about $100 more than 3GS cost wise. Not that thats my explanation for why 3GS doesn't get the free feature. But using your argument, 4 costs more.

The iPod Touch 4th Gen costs LESS and gets the free service.

Argumentation fail.

Expectations have gotten out of hand. 3G(s) users are lucky to even get the iOS update. Most companies don't provide support for last seasons products, although since the 3GS is still sold as new, I can see some of the frustrations. But you can end that with the purchase of MobileMe if you choose. I have an iPhone 4 and Mobile Me and I don't care that some are getting some of the functionality that I pay for, for free.

Seriously, Find my iPhone is now free! That's the main reason I just renewed my Mobile Me family pack (less than two weeks ago).... arggh!

I wouldn't worry about it. I'm sure the coming year Apple is going to give a major update to MM so those cheapskates that don't want to pay for it will probably end up getting so they won't miss out. ;)

That's some serious fragmentation going on with the iPhone's.

New feature not supported on a phone that's still being sold as new?

If Apple gives iPhone 5 owners free MM or whatever, I'd be fine with it. I got a lot of use from my iPhone 4 and enjoyed it for nearly a year. I got some freebies like FMi as well. I accept that people who buy new stuff get treated better. Its business. That's how software companies make money. People expect better stuff in new software releases. That's why they buy them

That 1000 times over.

This is what the 3GS crowd told use 3G users and now the 4 users are speaking the same to the 3GS. Turns out, next year your iPhone 4 will be in the exact same position. But you already knew that.

I accept that wholeheartedly. Refer to my post above.

So when I update my jailbroken 4.1 iPhone 4 what will happen. And is there a reliable jailbreak for 4.2?
