not really, Starbucks gave everyone the chance, just some were to lazy to sign up, so they lose out. ALL iphone owners took the appropriate steps by buying hardware, (some apple care), and paying their service fees (although not to apple but that contract subsidizes the initial price of the phone).
I have found with apple, you pay a premium fee for their products. I don't mind, as i pay them, but like any high end retail store/ car dealer, there are certain "boutique" services you receive. FMIP is such a service, its piece of mind for people who spend this kind of money for phones, mp3 players, ipads, ill even throw in laptops (wouldn't that be cool to have it on a mbp!)
there is no reason NOT to allow all devices to use this service. the bandwidth is tiny (maybe not at first as everyone will use it today for example).
this is pure greed. its apples way to force an upgrade nothing more. especially for something a 10 year old cell phone could handle as well, how do you think the cops can track you, if you go missing or do something bad.
