The older ATV does support AirTunes. I think you can find it in AirPlay, but no video streaming. So you aren't losing any features. Wait for the actual release, I remember installing the 4.1 GM on my iPhone. It had no wallpapers.
Nope, doesn't work. My Apple TV doesn't even show up on my iPhone, in iTunes it does.

Also, why would they include the new text alerts in the final version but not in the GM? I thought the GM was the final version!

should only be on ipad and ip4 , we paid money for the upgrade for new hardware and this a gift to those people.

you don't upgrade....you don't get free features, enough said.

Again for the more obtuse, iPhone 3GS is sold today. You can still give Apple 550$ smackers and get a iPhone 3GS, brand new, sealed in box.

Unification is fine, but the iPad is a completely different device with different functions to an iPhone. I don't even have an iPhone.

It is all about user expectations. There is a reason why iOS on the iPhone looks exactly the same that of the iPad.

What about the hardware justifies this ? I paid for my 3GS same as any iPhone 4 owner. Greed is all it is.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8B117 Safari/6531.22.7)

Previously paid only feature, minimum $99 a year cost, is now suddenly free for customers who buy current generation products.

Just to further clarify. People who haven't spent a dime on iOS in a year or more (ie: 3G, 3GS owners, non-Mobile me subscribers) are "outraged" at not being handed a free feature that they were never promised, or even expected.
...

I respectfully disagree with you on this one. Not many companies, if any, support their old products forever. You gotta give more attention to the new models. Plus, it's not very clear at the moment if 3G and 3GS are or will carry the feature later.

You are very right on this one. Completely slipped my mind..

I agree with you in your first paragraph. New products get more attention. But if you are paying for MM and only using FMi, then you have a right to be pissed. But MM has other great features that justify its cost.

And most will welcome it operating like their iPhone does.

Agree, people always get confused when the screen doesn't turn. Then I flip that switch and they go Ahhh.

Again, would make sense if the 3GS was an old product. It's not. It is currently sold as a current product by Apple.

It IS an old product. It costs less than the 4 and was introduced more than a year ago. Its not a discontinued product, but it is old because the iPhone 4 is newer. Apple doesn't sell it, ATT does.

Unification is fine, but the iPad is a completely different device with different functions to an iPhone. I don't even have an iPhone.

Mute switch makes more sense, the iPad is a content consumption device. Video, audio and photos is what it does a lot.

Right, but still, If I had bought my 3GS only a couple of days ago (it is still on sale) I would definitely feel treated as a second class customer.

Yes, but you paid less for it. About $100 less unless you are not in the US, which then I do not know the prices for.

If you bought that 3GS long before, you already enjoyed multiple software updates and daily use of that device. You already enjoyed the support for awhile. Part of the device cost is support fees. But that fee only lasts for so long before it runs out.

You said you think is negative. That's criticism. Also, people pay MORE for the iPhone 4. About $100 more if you can do math.

2 things :

- I'm not criticizing the free service or the fact it's free. I'm not looking a gift horse in the mouth at all. In fact, I'd like to even be able to do so, but the fact is, the horse ain't being gifted to me. I'm criticizing Apple's discrimination based on an artificial limitation that doesn't even reflect their current support status for hardware.

- 550$ is 100$ less than 650$, but it's still quite a lump of change. There is just no reason for Apple not to offer this service to 3GS owners. If they wanted it based on new purchases only, they should have made it for new purchases only and not offer the service to people who bought hardware more than a month ago, no matter which hardware.

It IS an old product. It costs less than the 4 and was introduced more than a year ago. Its not a discontinued product, but it is old because the iPhone 4 is newer. Apple doesn't sell it, ATT does.

It's currently sold. End of story, it's not "old" at all, it's brand new in a box sealed with a 1 year warranty. And 100$ off of 650$ is still 550$ and solid lump of change.

I'm still trying to figure out why so many people love this FMIP app?? Do you people actually lose your iPhones and require this? I couldn't imagine ever waking up and having no clue where my phone or wallet or keys would be. Perhaps I need to start partying like you kids.

To all those outraged about it possibly not being compliant with the 3G. Seriously now, when was that phone released? As is, we're already halfway through the iPhone4 life-cycle. The 3GS has been out for 1.5 years already - there comes a point where you have to pull the plug on old technology. Is the 3GS still for sale? Sure. However it's also at a price point to where the very entry level consumer who just 'wants an iphone' can afford to purchase one - if that same consumer is also looking at having a lifetime of upgrades and all the bells and whistles than that's one poorly educated consumer. As far as the current, long standing 3GS people......while your device may still work quite well for you - you're going to have to learn that you're about 7 months from being 2 product life-cycles behind the trend. That's just advancement in technology. Personally, I think Apple does a great job at still trying to keep everyone updated as much as possible with still trying to advance and progress. It's a difficult balance and they do it better than 98% of manufacturers out there.

BTW, Samsung - I'm still waiting for a firmware upgrade for my 3.5 year old DLP TV

But I think his point is if Apple still sell it, they should fully support it.

Yes, I do get this point. But Apple, like all companies wants to make money. Apple is still selling the 3GS but who would disagree it is a model that is very close to being discontinued. Putting them side by side, 3GS and iP4, which one do you think they want you to buy? I'd say hands down the iP4. Well providing free services for the iP4 only is one more incentive.

Believe me I don't like this either but it's how the market works.

Is Airplay working with a second genration ipod. How come Apple TV is getting a 4.1 update and not the 4.2? Do we know what is coming in the 4.1 apple tv update?

Apple is still selling the 3GS but who would disagree it is a model that is very close to being discontinued.

Very close as in 7 months from now.

The lengths some people will go to to justify Apple not having done any wrong is just ludicrous. It seems no matter how big my ignore list gets, there's always one or 2 more.

The 3GS has been out for 1.5 years already - there comes a point where you have to pull the plug on old technology.

Apple is pretty happy to offer me the service if I pay for it. Funny how that works uh ? Find my iPhone works even on the iPhone 3G.

Seriously, 4.2 is just announced for release today, and you are already asking for 4.2.1? What's the matter with you?

As a software developer, you should be able to figure this out for yourself. If not a software developer, what are you doing running illegal copies of software that was given to developers under NDA?

That's a whole lot of vitriol.

Unless I'm mistaken, 4.2.1 is the official name of today's release, as 4.2.0 was killed at the GM level. Clearly, the poster who was inquiring was asking if it is officially called 4.2.1, as opposed to impatiently demanding a new update. I'm surprised you didn't figure this out for yourself.

Seriously, Find my iPhone is now free! That's the main reason I just renewed my Mobile Me family pack (less than two weeks ago).... arggh!

If that is the reason you renewed, maybe you shouldn't be renewing in the first place. MobileMe is much more than find my phone..

Further devaluing MM for paid users.

I can't comment on the value of MobileMe for its users but "Find My Phone" should never have been part of a paid service.

For the money we pay for the phone and contract, if they have the tech to do it, it should be part of the standard phone os.

How is it greed? They are offering something free. Just not for everyone. That's like Starbucks offering a free drink for people with a gift card who register for an account on their site and you, who didn't meet those requirements, are moaning about it. Nothing about the hardware justifies this, but that is irrelevant.

Another good example is when you buy a Mac, but over a month later, a new version of iLife is out. Only people who bought that Mac at that time or later gets a free upgrade and you don't. You have the same hardware right? Even more outrageous then, since the 3GS and 4 are totally different hardware.

not really, Starbucks gave everyone the chance, just some were to lazy to sign up, so they lose out. ALL iphone owners took the appropriate steps by buying hardware, (some apple care), and paying their service fees (although not to apple but that contract subsidizes the initial price of the phone).

I have found with apple, you pay a premium fee for their products. I don't mind, as i pay them, but like any high end retail store/ car dealer, there are certain "boutique" services you receive. FMIP is such a service, its piece of mind for people who spend this kind of money for phones, mp3 players, ipads, ill even throw in laptops (wouldn't that be cool to have it on a mbp!)
there is no reason NOT to allow all devices to use this service. the bandwidth is tiny (maybe not at first as everyone will use it today for example).

this is pure greed. its apples way to force an upgrade nothing more. especially for something a 10 year old cell phone could handle as well, how do you think the cops can track you, if you go missing or do something bad.

The 3GS does everything it did the day you bought it. It's not a lack of support and it wasn't sold with the expectation of free Find My iPhone.
