Look, it's very simple.

The iPhone 4 is the top tier iPhone that Apple sells. To incentivize you to buy an iPhone 4 and upgrade from your Original/3G/3GS they are offering a very nice server called "Find my iPhone" for free to all iPhone 4 Users.

iPhone only.

I saw that on the Apple/ios page. That is a neat feature I didn't know was coming. I'm sure most of you probably knew about it though.

If Apple gives iPhone 5 owners free MM or whatever, I'd be fine with it. I got a lot of use from my iPhone 4 and enjoyed it for nearly a year. I got some freebies like FMi as well. I accept that people who buy new stuff get treated better. Its business. That's how software companies make money. People expect better stuff in new software releases. That's why they buy them

I accept that wholeheartedly. Refer to my post above.

It wasn't meant against you. You have your head screwed on. :)

Current generation customers includes iPhone 3GS.

No, it absolutely does not. You know full well that there is nothing "current generation" about the 3GS.

The fact that its still on sale in Apple stores at a massive discount is irrelevant to "current generation" hardware.

Except the free service also applies to owners of 3GS who happen to have an iPad, or a 4th gen iPod touch.

It doesn't even start to make sense. A 199$ iPod Touch gets the free service, a 550$ iPhone 3GS doesn't, even though both are sold today.

Massive discount ? A 8 GB 3GS is 550$. A 16 GB iPhone 4 is 650$. I don't see the massive discount...

You shouldn't need to upgrade to a IP4 though unless the 3GS that Apple sells is junk and not worthy of the free service. Its still a very capable phone. Most contracts now come with 18-24 month deals.

Expectations have gotten out of hand. 3G(s) users are lucky to even get the iOS update. Most companies don't provide support for last seasons products, although since the 3GS is still sold as new, I can see some of the frustrations. But you can end that with the purchase of MobileMe if you choose. I have an iPhone 4 and Mobile Me and I don't care that some are getting some of the functionality that I pay for, for free.

The iPhone 3Gs is sold at a lower rice. Using their own arguments against them, the iPhone 3GS costs about $100 less. By that logic, iPhone 4 owners should get free MM altogether.

Would make sense if only new purchases of iPhone 4, iPod Touch 4th Gen and iPad were getting the service and not those that bought the hardware without the feature in the first place.

The iPod Touch 4th Gen costs LESS and gets the free service.

Argumentation fail.

Really? Apples to apples please. The iPod touch can't be compared as the same as any iPhone. That's argument fail.

Now you're just picking at the straws. First you say new hardware, then new purchases of new hardware. Stay consistent.

By your logic, us iPhone 4 owners should get free MM since the price difference is $100.

So then instead of buying a new iPhone 4, buy MobileMe.

Find my iPhone works fine on 3G/3GS it just isn't free.

No but the point is that we didn't know it was going to be free for only iPhone 4 users. If 3GS users knew that beforehand then fine make your choice. The fact is that a current selling product, which up until a few months ago was the top of the range iPhone, is not being offered this service for free as well.

If FMi was valuable enough to be worth paying $XX for, and you decided to pay the $XX for it, then you got what you paid for at a price which was worthwhile to you. Fair enough.

That a company didn't tell you that they'd offer a free service favoring their newer product, and didn't tell anyone about it before telling anyone about it, is not unreasonable. If you bought it within 30 days, you can return it and get a refund; if not, come to grips with the reality that things change and early adopters pay a price. Quit whining.

So when I update my jailbroken 4.1 iPhone 4 what will happen. And is there a reliable jailbreak for 4.2?
when you update to 4.2 you will lose your jailbreak, you would need to jailbreak again. At present there is no official jailbreak as it is still classed as beta (so hold off updating for time being), expect to see a jailbreak within 24 hours of release I would say.

Apple Marketing Exec: "Hey, what if we took that Find My iPhone feature and offered it free to all current generation hardware this holiday season? Wouldn't that be a great holiday incentive?"

Board: "Hmm, yes it would."

Jobs: "Good idea."

All: "Let's Do it!"

iPhone 4 customers: "Sweet! Where did this come from? Happy Holidays to Me!"

iPhone 3GS owners: "Waaaaaaaaa!"

iPhone 3G owners: "Does 4.2 fix my phone or break it?"

iPhone 1G owners: "At least my screen's not yellow."

Except the free service also applies to owners of 3GS who happen to have an iPad, or a 4th gen iPod touch.

The iPhone 3GS comes with a contract. If you want to break that contract for a contract free phone, thats entirely different to what is going on here. Please stop mixing in random crap and picking at straws.

The iPod touch is NOT the same as an iPhone. Comparing the two means you ran out of iPhone to iPhone arguments and therefore are wrong.

That's a $100 difference genius. 650-550=100 By your flawed logic, 4 owners should get free MM. Not to mention, stuff depreciates. Your one year old 3GS isn't worth 550.

So then instead of buying a new iPhone 4, buy MobileMe.

Find my iPhone works fine on 3G/3GS it just isn't free.

I wouldn't buy an iPhone 4 because in 6 months time it will no longer be eligible for top of the range updates

If FMi was valuable enough to be worth paying $XX for, and you decided to pay the $XX for it, then you got what you paid for at a price which was worthwhile to you. Fair enough.

I dont have an iPhone anymore i was just sticking up for the guys who got screwed. And im sorry i disagree, it is unreasonable as the consumer wasn't able to factor that into their buying decision. If they wanted to just offer it to IP4 owners then it should have been done back in the summer when it launched. That way everyone knows whats going on

Really? Apples to apples please. The iPod touch can't be compared as the same as any iPhone. That's argument fail.

You wanted to make the price argumentation. If it is about price, then iPad at 499$ and iPod at 199$ is cheaper. If it is about current generation hardware, then iPhone 3GS is current generation, it is sold brand new in box.

So which is it ? It doesn't even start to make sense.

Now you're just picking at the straws. First you say new hardware, then new purchases of new hardware. Stay consistent.

I am consistent. I've said since the first time you've replied : It should be free to everyone that has a device on which the service works. This even goes so far as to include iPhone 3G owners.

Your one year old 3GS isn't worth 550.

Neither is your 5 month old iPhone 4 worth 650$. So which is it ? However, a brand new in box sealed 3GS is worth 550$.

That's not what anyone pays for iPhone, unless they are seriously inept.

An iPhone 3GS is $99

An iPhone 4 starts at $199. That's twice the price. Try again. (Or rather, don't. Throwing random unlocked iPhone prices out as examples is hardly trying)

I'm still trying to figure out why so many people love this FMIP app?? Do you people actually lose your iPhones and require this? I couldn't imagine ever waking up and having no clue where my phone or wallet or keys would be. Perhaps I need to start partying like you kids.

To all those outraged about it possibly not being compliant with the 3G. Seriously now, when was that phone released? As is, we're already halfway through the iPhone4 life-cycle. The 3GS has been out for 1.5 years already - there comes a point where you have to pull the plug on old technology. Is the 3GS still for sale? Sure. However it's also at a price point to where the very entry level consumer who just 'wants an iphone' can afford to purchase one - if that same consumer is also looking at having a lifetime of upgrades and all the bells and whistles than that's one poorly educated consumer. As far as the current, long standing 3GS people......while your device may still work quite well for you - you're going to have to learn that you're about 7 months from being 2 product life-cycles behind the trend. That's just advancement in technology. Personally, I think Apple does a great job at still trying to keep everyone updated as much as possible with still trying to advance and progress. It's a difficult balance and they do it better than 98% of manufacturers out there.

BTW, Samsung - I'm still waiting for a firmware upgrade for my 3.5 year old DLP TV

Well said.

Heck with some of your people's logic, you are implying Apple should give free iPhones to everyone.

It's like anything else. You buy a car then a year later, they improve the car and give it a more powerful, more fuel efficient engine. Then you go into the dealer and say, oh by the way, can you swap in the new motor for me for free??? No that's not happening. Same with the iPhone.

For all of you who bought a 3Gs lately, well you knew ahead of time before purchase, that the phone is no longer current and will be EOL pretty soon. But you saved the $100 and bought the cheaper, older generation phone.

You are so funny

You are so funny! iOS4.2 isn't about find my iphone - it's about improvements and new features! With 4.2 I can *use* my iPad finally - thanks to multitasking. Eg. open a ssh-tunnel to my router and then access my transmission webgui over safari.

BTW: I have a MM-subscription. I never had to use fmi. I tried it a couple of times to show my friends how well it works - but in 4 of 5 times it did not! The day I will really need it, I'm pretty sure it won't work too. So forget fmi and enjoy the real features of iOS4.2 :)

The 3GS is currently sold, yes, as Last Year's hardware at 50% the price of an iPhone 4 ($100 less). I know you feel that you deserve something equal to current customers who have paid Apple more for newer hardware, but sadly, you're wrong in this case.

Yup.

Lexus owners get free car washes. Why can't I get one for my Toyota Yaris? My Yaris is a 2011 version, and it's worth more than my friend's 2002 Lexus, so how come I don't qualify?

That's not what anyone pays for iPhone, unless they are seriously inept.

Uh ? Plenty of people in Canada pay those prices. You know why ? Unlocked and no contract. In Europe too. The only inept people are those constantly locked to a carrier in a contract.

The line at the Apple Store on the day of launch was longer than at Rogers/Bell/Telus combined. Yet the Apple store only had the above 500$ pricing and wasn't selling subsidzed phones in Canada.

You only choose to insult people who pay that price because it suits your argument.

I'm still trying to figure out why so many people love this FMIP app??

It's not even a little bit hard to understand. Find My iPhone is the greatest feature you hope to never, ever have to use.

A lot of people manage their business/lives from an iPhone. Losing it could be an absolute disaster for some people, between the potential loss of data and financial burden to replace.

FMiP provides several levels of assistance in recovering a lost phone that might otherwise never be found.

It's a no brainer.

iPod touch and iPad are two different products. Same with the 3GS and 4, which isn't the same generation. The 4 came out after the 3GS, so it is of a newer generation. It's about generation. The latest generation get features and software upgrade priority over older generations. Generation doesn't mean what is sold today but when those devices were first released.

But please, I need a laugh so please state the reasons why you think the free feature should be for ALL users. This time, leave out the iPod to iPhone price comparisons. And iPad to iPhone as well.

Hey guys, the free Find my iPhone seems to be working now but it crashes the settings app when I try to accept the new terms of service. I'm running 4.2 GM, not 4.2.1 GM

Edit: Not crashing anymore.
