Excuse my ignorance, but other than pinch to zoom, what is 2 and 3 finger multi touch being used for on the iphone because if its not being used, the solution seems simple. The best answer is to make a section in setings where you can see what your multitouch options are and let you set what does what the same way that you can on your Mac.

You can tap with three fingers and then drag to zoom into the screen like a cntrl+scroll on the mac. (That is, if you allow it in system prefs.)

If you meant that (when you mentioned "zoom") already, sorry.

One trouble with Apple is that they refuse to add more buttons even if they make sense. So we end up with Morse code home button tapping and Martian style multi-tentacle gestures.

Yeah, sort of like when people moaned about moving from the telegraph to phones

It's called evolution. "Martian style" to you may be kids play to another...

Apples is one of those companies who sell things to last only 3 years, always changing processors, chaning the OS to make older models uncompatibles and reserving existing technologies for later on...

The iPad is just another example.

oh please. its the CONSUMER that demands the latest & greatest. it apple were stupid enough to sit on a product and leave it unchanged for *years* guess what would happen? youd btch about it and buy something else that had more modern capabilities.

thats the name of the game, dude. new processors, new features.

that being said, apple products differ from those of say microsoft, because they are very consistent over the years. see Mac OS X and contrast that to the many recent versions of Windows.

feature, not a bug. my dad has enough trouble using one button on a mouse. a single home button is perfect because he always knows what it does and where it gets him. KISS principle for the win.

Ah, yes, yet another reason to jailbreak. Just put iOS 4.3 beta 2 onto my iPhone 4. Not only did I remove the UDID requirement, but I've enabled multitouch gestures as well. Was a piece of cake :p.

I like having options. Four and five fingers on an iPhone might be tough, especially if you have big hands/fingers. Still, to have the option - worth it.

I completely agree, for some people it may be difficult, but that's not a reason to prevent others from being able to do it who may find it incredibly effective and efficient. There are many times when double tapping the home button, then finding the app icon, then selecting it is MUCH harder than a simple swipe would be. We have four finger gestures on our track pads and those really aren't that bigger than the iphone screen ...

Back when Jobs was still using mice at NeXT in the early 1990s, I was programming touch UIs on capacitive screens for use by the mass public.

Secret or overloaded gestures are not necessarily good evolution.

Sometimes KISS means having a button for more than just one action. Think of radios, ovens, and many other devices.

Even the iPhone doesn't have just one button. It also has power, volume and silencer buttons... because they're used for common tasks that you want immediate access to. More buttons are not automatically bad.

For instance, most users have one or more other favorite tasks that they'd like a button (or always-available gesture) for, from orientation lock to send/end to notifications, to camera, to whatever.

Guy needs to cut his fingernails, desperately.

HAHA That is the first thing I noticed too. I mean dude if you are going to do these kind of demos invest in some clippers.

My guess is that if they get enough positive reports from the beta testers they may roll it out to all devices as all the iOS devices work similarly.

I'm sorry, but the best feature in that video is the Settings option to control the functionality of the side switch. Finally, I can have rotation lock with my switch again!
