And if you think Orange's customer service is bad, 3 has all Indian call centres, with the aim to sell sell sell. I tried for months to terminate my 30 day rolling mi-fi contract, i was lied to on every call i had to go to a 3 store to get the store manager to try for me, even he had to speak to the Indian call centre who tried to sell him products! Once the contract was eventually terminated i got a final bill, which i paid, then i got two more letters stating i hadn't paid and nasty phone calls from debt agencies who took my details 3 times to pay it.

I will NEVER go near three again!

+1 on that...!!!

When I was on Three (all them years ago), when I terminted my contract, the amount of times I was told, 'Yep, next month will be your final bill' was ridiculous...!!:p

.....I think I must've received more than 4 'final bills'..!!!! Never again.....!!

3's customer service is terrible but if you never need to call them then so what? For me the trade off is worth it to get the best data network for a really cheap price. I'm paying £10 less a month on 3 than I was on Orange and getting much better service

Certainly put me off from wanting a contract MiFi. PAYG is better as they won't be able to take money from my bank account.

The latest moderator comment on Three's blog post about all you can eat data on payg says that they have put in controls to monitor whether people are tethering because it is against the T&C's. Hmmmmm

From 3s help pages:

Can I use my iPhone on Three for tethering?
Yes, you could use your iPhone for tethering if you're on The One Plan. But if you're not on The One Plan, we'd suggest that you buy one of our Mobile Internet Add-ons by going to My3.

T-Mobile are saying that it's definitely classed as "mobile broadband" now and there's a charge :( shame really. How does 3G tethering differ from using 3G on my phone? I don't understand, I thought it just relayed my data connection to whatever was connected to it!

It's the potential for a much higher usage of data.

That's just a recommendation. Anyone who even thinks about looking at these forums about an issue such as this has the common sense to keep an eye on their usage and not go above the limits agreed in their contract.

All of three's iPhone plans can be used for tethering without an add on. It's just that they assume you'll be using it heavily and might go over if you only have 500 or so MB.

Yes... I know.

I posted that in response to another message that stated

You need to read my comment in context.

Where do you get this info? Threes blog states that tethering is only allowed on the One Plan so yes I agree with you if all iPhone plans are the One Plan but officially it is against the T&C's on any other plan. At least that's what they say on the blog

bite the bullet and updated to 4.3 (as expected lost the Jailbreak). Hotspot working for me T-Mobile purchased from Apple Sim free, rolling 30 day contract.

there's no excuse any more as the networks have all use unlimited data. Could understand if they still had the unlimited tariffs as people would go crazy but why the hell cant be use our allotted data on what we want.

Spoke to an O2 rep on the phone today and talked about PH, how 3 and vodafone offer it as a no extra cost thing. While he wouldn't tell me what's coming in the new contract reshuffle(from 29/3) he did say that I would probably be very pleased!

Here's hoping for free PH all you can eat data and an early upgrade!! (only joking about the last 2 but we can all dream!):)

I will NEVER go near three again!

I managed to get out of my old 3 contract early as they changed terms and conditions. Though the experience was painful, dealing with call centres who just want to sell you something is annoying.

I understand the network is better than 2 years ago, but I wouldn't want to deal with their customer service. To be fair to O2 their staff have always been helpful to me when I've called them. It's just the network and daft policy decisions they make that makes me want to jump ship.

I just signed up for the O2 Bolt On and got this message:

Thank you for your request. We're adding the 500MB UK Data for Tethering and Browsing Bolt On you asked for. It'll cost £7.65.

500MB UK Data for Tethering and Browsing lets you use your mobile as a modem to connect your computer to the internet and includes 500MB additional UK data per month. You'll be able to use your full UK data allowance for either tethering or browsing.

You'll see these details on your next bill. You can check it at www.o2.co.uk/myo2account.

Enjoy your new Bolt On, thanks again for being on O2.

Regards,

O2

So it looks like I will be able to use my normal data allowance, as well as the extra 500MB for tethering. However, they also sent me an SMS saying that the bolt on will start on the 20th (my next bill date)

Edit: Personal Hotspot is now up and running for me. So I now have 1.25GB per month to use... better get downloading.

I had the opposite experience with O2. I've come close to pulling my hair out with them in the past. Having sampled other networks, I've come to resign myself to the fact that they're all a bit ******.

So far, 3 have offered amazing service but I'm confident that they'll prove themselves to be a total pain in the @$$ before the 12 months are up.

I am on T-Mobile UK and I could always do tethering.

I also have Web and Walk PLUS which specifically allows tethering

Since 4.3, when I enable the personal hotspot, and connect via my laptop, I get redirected to a T-mobile page asking me to pay more money.

This should not be happening with my account but T-mobile customer service don't know how to fix it and re-direct me to talk to Apple! :(

Hi all

Im on Orange UK

Ive had a tethering plan and been using USB tethering for a few months now.
When i updated to 4.3 the hotspot worked fine. Good speeds too.

If you leave tesco mobile try 3network they dont charge for tethering its in with your unlimited data bundle. This one really is unlimited.

Thats where im heading next.

You get a free micro sim online from there website. On paygo if you top up £10 a month you get so many hundred minutes and so many hundred texts and 1GB of data all for a £10 top up....

Worth a look.
Try it with a free sim...

I'm on vodafone uk, and I just turned on the PH from the main settings page...and then watched as the option disappeared before my eyes

It's now in the network settings for some reason, and I'm able to turn it on and link my iPad to it, however when trying to browse it just times out - the iPhone has full 3G signal

Hopefully I haven't just been charged for the 500mb tethering/hotspot add on by vodafone!

EDIT it's now back on the main settings page ....
