$30/month is already a hefty fee for data usage. It surprising that AT&T can get away with charging more for tethering. Hopefully a bit of competition will solve that problem.

Amen, brother. If I could keep my existing $30 unlimited plan and get the mobile hotspot service as lagniappe, I'd be extremely satisfied.

kinda off topic but...

so verizon iphone will have VZNavigator and Vcast Media Manager? and I assume it is impossible to delete without jailbreak... SO these apps will a part of ios 4.2.5 and eventually part of the ios 4.3 for cdma 4?

My question is what does Vcast media manager do? also I on my previous verizon phones.. I have been able to backup and restore my contacts via "backup Assistant" will I be able to restore my contacts to my iphone with that? or will I have to do it manually?

Is that proven anywhere? I can't imagine Apple allowing them to put carrier apps you can't remove. They didn't do it for any of the other providers around the world did they?

I thought gizmodo said they would have those apps, on the live blog

... hold on let me find it

Apple (Phil Schiller) said explicitly - no crapware in ROM.

The press at the event saw none on the phones they got to demo. Supposedly the only thing was the Hotspot stuff. The claim was that the Verizon specific items would be in the app store for download.

well this is what Jason said

Jason Chen:
Tim Cook just sidestepped the question about whether people will have a bad experience not being able to use data and voice simultaneously by saying that all people have been asking is for it to be on Verizon. [Ars Technica]

Jason Chen:
Verizon’s iPhone will have the hotspot app in there by default, as well as VZ Navigator and V CAST Media Manager. Verizon app spam! [Technologizer]

A standard no comment on when an LTE iPhone is set to appear. [Technologizer]

..... does this mean as soon as you restore your phone you lose the crapware?

Very disappointed they didn't use the redesign of the phone to release the white iPhone 4!

"Apple’s own Phil Schiller assured the press that Verizon would not be loading up the device with crapware, too. “We want the experience to be the same for every iPhone user. So there are no special Verizon Apps preinstalled,” Schiller told Ars. “AT&T offers customers some apps via the App Store. I’ll let Verizon comment if they are working on anything for that.”"

I updated my previous message to fix my reference to Tim Cook.

And Jason Chen is a douche.

I believe you. Strange, I don't know why Gizmodo posted that. Oh well good to hear though! and that is what I expected apple to do

update:
just found this from technologizer

Jason: No pre-loaded Verizon apps, Matt. Just the hotspot utility.

but vcast will be in the app store

conclusion: Gizmodo failed for some reason, posted that.
but back to my question, can I get vcast from the app store restore my contacts with backup assistant

Tethering via mobile hotspot and then....

you get a call and all data stops.. I'll wait for LTE

TUAW seems to have flip-flopped on the issue. My old CDMA phone (Treo) went to voice mail - did Verizon change something on their network?

Seems so. It seems that all the current phones have priority on voice.

Anyway, I think importance of simultaneous talk and data is not as great as some suggest. Majority of users won't really see difference. However, if you have habit of browsing and talking the same time then naturally this is an issue. Its good to remember that even GSM iPhone puts data on hold if you don't have 3G connection.

No offence but why are you quoting a (meta) liveblog written by someone who wasn't even there?

Does AT&T allow Wifi tethering for free on their android phones? If so, then I'm not sure why they wouldn't on the iPhone, especially if Verizon offers it for free.

Yeah, you didn't get the memo that they weren't invited? How can they liveblog at an event they're not at.

By reading other live blogs and then blogging based on that information... The age of internet journalism.

so whats the actual difference to tethering which ive been using for the last 2 years?

Tethering thru Bluetooth/USB allows for only one device. The Personal Hotspot would allow for multiple.

Although you could simply use the computer tetherering to share the connection though wifi
