It's also legal for AT&T to boot you from their network and charge you an ETF.

Yes... it's in your terms and conditions that you agreed too. If you misuse the service you purchased (like any service) they have the right to "boot you" and charge you for the services used.

More than likely, AT&T will respond with a competitive program. That's what free enterprise is all about. Best side affect of Verizon joining in with the iPhone.

So I need to get permission from AT&T even though the option to use tether is on my iPhone 3GS?

You need...
  • iTunes 9.2 or later installed
  • DataPro with Tethering data plan
  • iPhone 3G or later with iOS 4
  • USB or Bluetooth tethering

Item # 2 means you need a plan to cover it.

And heck, if you are already paying $25 for 2GB of data, should it matter how you use it whether it's on your iPhone or your laptop?

You are not paying $25 for 2GB of data. You pay $25 for "the average amount of data used by customers paying $25 for 2GB of data", and that is a lot less than 2GB. Here is how the phone company calculates a price: "We offer 'up to 2 GB per month'. People buying this use 1 GB per month on average. The cost of supplying 1 GB per month, plus some profit, equals $25 per month. That's what we charge". If you had to pay for the cost of actually supplying $2GB per month then you would have to pay more. If you use tethering, then you will consume more then what the phone company assumed for the avarage user.

Why does tethering ever cost more, other than carriers wanting more money? For AT&T, you have 200 mb (NOTHING) or 2gb. I use like 1gb, and would love to have another for free tethering.

Apple should just include it and give carriers no option to monitor its use or disable it. It they don't like it, they don't have to sell the iPhone.

How you use the your data shouldn't impact how much you pay. The only thing that should matter is how much you use. Carriers should not be able to charge for a service that that the phone, not the carrier, provides.

Agree

Is there a way to change the name of your wifi hotspot?

sigh.... these next three weeks will be sooooooooo slow.........

AGONY!!!.....

so will cdma and gsm iphone 5s launch together in june? will it be LTE? or will we have to wait for 2012

ipad 2 launch date?

Holy crap, who knew there were AT&T fanboys?

Well.. Yes. Given any concievable situation where there is more than 1 choice, there will of course be at least 2 different options and rabid defenders of said options.

I have an iPhone on AT&T. I've had good coverage with no problems.
So of course anyone who chooses Verizon must be insane. (sarcasm)

Those of us that are sane realize that there are those who live in areas where one of the providers have better coverage. Those of us that are sane realize that thier particular experience with a provider may not reflect someone elses experience.

I have MyWi.. no worries for me! I mean come on, we have known that the iPhone can act as a WiFi hotspot.. and they are just now implementing it now?

At least AT&T will be stronger as a lot of people will switch to Verizon.. and hopefully that means AT&T will get better Android phones!

I was wondering the same..... but more importantly is not 4.2.5 but the new firmware that will be on the cdma iphone.

I think 4.3 will launch on february 10 or shortly after, for cdma and gsm phones. But we don't know if the 24kpwn and/or the Shatter exploit has been patched in the new firmware.

....

So will we get gsm iphone 5 and cdma iphone 5 in june?! or cdma a little bit later?

24kpwn has been patched for a while. SHAtter is the only hopeful exploit but it may or may not have been leaked and if so, it may have been patched.

I just want folders that hold more than 12 apps, without jailbreaking.

Yeah I agree with ya there. I have my phone jailbroken.. and having the unlimited amount of apps in a folder is nice.. but I see why Apple left it out. Sometimes you forget which folders have apps beyond the 12 app limit.. and you might forget that you have certain apps! My one folder has over 30 games in it... And I love it!

They are AT&T's pipes. So you do need permission to use them.

Agree that it's weird that what you use the pipes for matters so much. When what the really matters is how much you use the pipes.

They are really just trying to dissuade or stop customers from activities that they fear will use too much of thier pipes.

... since when was 24kpwn patched? I mean it makes sense that it would be patched, as people are using it now. Yea SHAtter probably did get leaked but that doesn't mean apple will patch it right away.

If SHAtter is patched, we'll just find another exploit.

Either Verizon will push the envelope and offer unlimited data, tethering, and other cool options for iPhone users or they will pull an AT&T: As soon as decent fast phone comes along (like iPhone 4), they will pull the plug, put caps on the data, add fees for tethering, and limit the capability of a great phone.

I'm hoping for the former, which may pressure AT&T to remain competitive and offer it to current iphone users who are considering switching.

Expect the latter from Verizon.

+1 for the new competition giving us more options/features.

-1 because AT&T is waiting to see what Verizon is going to charge for thier various services and then most likely offer the same at not 1 penny less.

From what I understand, when an iDevice is used for tethering, it runs hot enough that you can also use it as a coffee warmer.

"That's not a bug! That's a FEATURE!"

competition FTW!!
but yeah, I wish ATT would do like 200MB, 1 GB, 2GB, and UNLTD, everyone is happy. at $5 increments. makes so much sense. and free tethering.

Well I just want a notification system that is not circa 2003. Oh, and app closing that is not lame. Really, holding icons down until they jiggle as a metaphor for closing an app? L-A-M-E-W-A-D. Apple - pull a page from history and steal from Palm / HP.

The notification system is one of the only major complaints I have with iOS. Nearly every other mobile OS bests it by a long shot.
