There's an option in mail settings to turn on google calendar sync. Just an easy button to swipe.

Yes but it doesn't work! I added an entry in Calendar App/Mac and it will show up in Google Calendar (Browser) but NOT in iPhone Calendar. Then I made one in iPhone Cal and it shows up in Google Calendar (Browser) but NOT in Mac Calendar App. What a pity!!! And that worked so fine and absolutely reliable since February '09… One of the very best features by far!

Edit: When I make an entry in Google Cal (browser) it will show up in Mac Calendar but NOT in iPhone Calendar. I am feeling really screwed up now. Never made such a bad experience with any Apple product before! It's a real Windows feeling. You can't rely on anything.

Very slow update! I have a 3G iPhone (16Gb model with about 12Gb of data) and after two hours the progress bar on the backup pane hasn't moved five percent.

I launched the Activity Monitor utility just to confirm that there is some disk activity and I see that data is being written at about 500 Kb/sec. The USB cable is connected to the front port on my MacPro.

I think my iPhone 4 will be here before it finishes backing up...lol Why the hell is it back up even after I already backed it up:confused:

Now my iPhone 3G on OS 4 shows the lock screen for about 10 seconds before it crashes and reboots. I'm so frusterated

I think that our iPhone are still somewhat stuck in the recovery mode loop. :( Have to know more commands to break out of the loop. :(

Gmail Exchange - doesn't work?

Anyone else having problems with adding Gmail to Exchange? It does not push emails, does not sync when I read/delete emails on the phone... in fact, it doesn't even LET me delete emails from the phone.

I've never had Gmail on the Exchange client because I've used that for my work email... is this how it normally acts or is this a problem with the iOS4.0?

Wow. You need to calm down. Are you using Gmail Exchange for calendars? Go look at the settings on your phone.

I updated my home in under 10 minutes (10 seconds for backup) and everything is working fine. My google calendar is still there and I just tested creating an event on the web in Google calendar and it showed up in both iCal and my iPhone 3GS (iOS 4.0). I then deleted the event and it disappeared from the phone and iCal as well. Finally, I created a test event in the iPhone Calendar app and made sure to select the "right calendar". Lo and behold, the Event popped up on the Google Calendar web interface because I created it in the Gmail calendar and not one of the other calendars.

Take a chill pill and check what your settings are and what you are doing.

Before the upgrade, I had my Gmail calendar syncing as a CAL DAV account and the upgrade process automatically converted it into a setting of "ON" for calendars in my Gmail account.

@room237: Just use Gmail account type instead as it supports calendars better than the Google Exchange ever did. Google Exchange never displayed emails addresses of attendees and their statuses properly whereas CAL DAV and whatever the GMAIL account in iOS4 does.

It is possible that the fake exchange from Google no longer works on iOS 4.0. Real exchange should work though.

PS. If you need contacts from Gmail, use the exchange support for just Contacts until either Apple fixes iOS or Google fixes their Exchange emulation.

So far.. I'm hating iOS 4.0

Only because it killed all my contacts..

Thankfully I have backups at work in vCards on outlook.. but of course today we had a hardware issue with our servers.. and if I lose my contacts.. I will absolutely cry.. :p

problem updating iPhone 3g

I tried updating via 'new software is available' link within itunes and I get the following message " An error occurred while backing up this iphone (-402636789). Would you like to continue to update this phone without backup - continuing without back up will result in the loss of all contents on this iPhone"
Any suggestions??????

Anyone having issues with google contacts/calendars not showing on their phone needs to just wait. It is syncing back with google's servers. But very slowly. I guess their servers are suffering just like apple's.
My iPhone had no contacts, no email, no calendars at all for about an hour, then they slowly started appearing, was another 30 mins before all the contacts were back there, but they came, all automatically.

I'm not about to read through 40 pages of posts, but if it helps anyone I was able to upgrade my wife's 3G without any major problems.

Just clicking the update button did not work. I tried at least 3x before I gave up. I Googled the fix for 3G and the solution is to do a restore. Just be sure to do a manual backup then go through the restore process. It will basically wipe the device, then upgrade to 4.0. Then it will restore all the data and most of the apps. I say most because I had to re-install some missing apps.

I think you've got it. I waited until I got home from work to do the update and it went off without a hitch. Impatience leads to pain almost every time.

Interesting

Here's an interesting tidbit. My mother has had a .Mac email address back when .Mac allowed a single user to add another full email account for $10 extra per year. When Apple changed .Mac to MobileMe, they stopped allowing this but still honored those who have this extra account.

Now, I helped update her 3GS to 4.0, and apparently she can use over the air syncing with ALL her applications. Before she would have had to pay $99 for a full MobileMe account. However, for some reason, she now has over the air syncing with the $10 a year addition to their single user .Mac/MobileMe account. Very odd. :)

Those of you who have lost contacts or calendar entries synced locally on your Mac, don't forget about Time Machine. It's fairly easy to retrieve your lost data that way. If you aren't on a Mac or using Time Machine, well... sorry.

Not working on my primary computer

Every time I click 'check for updates' on my primary computer it says 'itunes is up to date' and i know this! what about my iphone? On my secondary computer it allows me to download the update but what will happen if i update on my secondary computer? will i lose anything?

I installed iOS 4 GM version on my iPhone. Now, I can't update my iPhone to iOS 4 by using "Update" in iTunes. Do I need to use the "Restore" function to update my iPhone?

Because of the time it was taking, I left my update to work itself out overnight. Everything is now working fine, except that I no longer havea phone signal and there is no reaction when I pop out and re-insert my SIM.

Anybody suffering from this?

Any help appreciated.

I installed iOS 4 on my 3G. It is a lot faster than 3.X, almost approaching 2.X in speed. I have more than half of my 16GB phone filled, and it still sails along. I recommend the update for all users.

Dang after 5.5 hours the update was still backing up my 3gs. So I canceled it, removed every song and app from the iPhone. Update only took 10 minutes after that, including resyncing all my songs and apps.

It seems there are certain apps like facebook and IMDB, the back up was hanging up on.

Wife's 3G had a huge Camera Roll which was never deleted though all imported and synching to photo album. Used OS X Image Capture App to delete the roll. Backups super quick without it. Also did Download Only, then Restore and finally Synched back everything else. Went real quick.

And, suprisingly, iOS 4 is faster and the 3G seems much improved performance wise...

How big is iPhone 4.0?

After a few glitches and restarts, I was finally able to download and install it on my iPhone 3G. But now the "Other" is clocking in at 2.96 GB?!?! Can this be right? Is the new iOS really that big? That seems excessive.

Only took me like 10-15 minutes to download and install the update earlier. Had my phone in airplane mode for it, don't know if that made a difference.

after taking a long time to copy all my contacts by hand, yes i did this just in case, i updated in about 10-15 minutes, no problems at all and all my contacts and everything else stayed the same. absolutely no problems even with 28gigs full.
