Well into the third hour of backing up so far, and the indicator is only below the "k" in "Backing up..."

This is on a 3G.

going on a little over 2 hours backup for me. 3G did a sync and backup BEFORE updating. Guess Ill leave it overnight and see if anything has happened tomorrow morning. Oh well guess many of the features are for more "advanced" models anyway. Hows that for sour grapes.

My update went fine.

My wife's iPod Touch 3g apparently got bricked by the software.

It keeps trying to update over and over again and fails every damn time.

Unhappy wife.

The backup of the device apparently is corrupt . Wonderful.

Now what?

Unplug from computer and make sure it's off. Then Plug in and quickly hold down BOTH home and power (sleep/wake) for exactly 10 secs. then let go of JUST the sleep-wake button and continue holding home until it shows up in iTunes (you won't see anything on the screen if you did it right)

Interesting. I have a 32gb iphone 3gs. I did a backup before installing ios4.

When i updated the os it didn't need to do another backup and finished the whole thing in about 30 minutes or a little less.

Maybe if you just do a manual backup and then immediately update the os it goes faster. I hope that helps others.

Backup should go faster if you UNsync all your music, videos and photos BEFORE installing the new software.

then resync after installing.

Is my logic sound?

I sync my calendar via Google's calendar. It's all gone after the update. Why? How do I fix? Nothing is lost on google.com calendar site.

My iPod touch took 2 hours to back up, all the while the progress slider only progressed about 5%. I checked on it not long ago and it had suddenly began restoring. The full restore took another hour.
I had to do a shutdown and reboot of my iPod touch after the update. Everything was horribly slow before that. Now it's purring along with 4.0.

A Different FIX for "No Service"

I updated the OS without a full restore (about 30 min) and when I finished I had no 3G or Edge signal. Just "No Service" at the top left of my screen.

I tried a reset, a Hard Reset and another hard reset, to no avail. I went into settings and tried turning 3G on and off: no luck.

I then turned on airplane mode and turned it off. THAT TOTALLY SOLVED MY PROBLEM.

I had put my machine into airplane mode before the upgrade and it was OUT of airplane mode after the upgrade. Perhaps there's a bug in the update process that is related to updating from that state. (Like keeping the settings in airplane mode, but not showing that in the settings app.)

Anyway all seems fine now (so far).

Pete

Oh NO that's a real HEAVY drawback!! I just checked it and you are right. No entries in iPhone calendar at all! That was one of the main features that I was using and it worked pretty well since February '09. I would never have updated to iOS 4 if I knew that before!

:( :( :(

Have a look at

I am afraid my next phone will be an Android...

Those of you with excessive backup times - how much stuff is on your device? I am assuming quite a bit?

I was thinking along the same lines since folks were complaining about all their photos being low-res until after a resync. So, because I have tons of photos on my 3G, I stopped the backup AGAIN... unsync'd all of my photos, and started again. That was 3hrs ago and the bar has barely moved.

I'm thinking either this update wasn't really ready for primetime, or there's something wrong with my phone. My phone has never been jailbroken and everything by the book, and it's been working fine up until now, so I'm betting somebody rushed this update before it was all the way cooked for all device models. Likely it's only really ready for the iPhone 4 and thats it. The rest of us are just a bunch of big fat unpaid beta testers.

There's an option in mail settings to turn on google calendar sync. Just an easy button to swipe. Much better choice.

Can sync to Yahoo Calendars now also.

Seems to be a 3G issue from all the posts I have read. I have yet to read a post about this happening on a 3GS. I could be totally wrong though.
