Not only does our update and restore take over 6 hours. We can't even use custom backgrounds for the home screen! Looks like Folders is all we get.

During the "restore in progress" on my 3G, I noticed the new wallpaper pop up for a moment. Total B.S. Mine is currently restoring music, which will take a while. I made sure I performed a sync first and then a separate backup before I ran the update. The backup process during the update only took about 10 minutes for me.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_0 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Mobile/8A293)

I downloaded the new PS this afternoon, and so far I really like. The folders are great, and it's nice having a new wallpaper on both the home, and lock screen.

They don't mean "worth it" as in money spent, obviously. They mean "worth it" as in time spent, battery life, funcion, sluggishnish, etc. They mean, if they upgrade to 4, will the extra features outweigh any problems from running on an old platform.

This question is best answered by someone with a 3G that updates to 4, not someone who seems to be grumpy today.

Exactly right. Well said rmatthewware

Just had a thought...

Of those whose update and restore are taking a long time, how many have your phone plugged in via the USB hub of your Apple monitor. I do, and I'm thinking maybe the hub in this monitor is only USB 1 speed (not 2.0). This could be the culprit. Arggggg!!!!

Download took 3 mins for me on a 100mbs connection. I love being in Singapore . . . seems like Apple has peering here for all their stuff. :)

Backup went smoothly, took like 3 mins. Installing now . . .

I have a 3G.

Nevermind, that's not it.

Doesn't my iPhone normally get 'backed up' anyway?

Wow - it is like a sector for sector copy. (meaning it is just taking a very long time and I have an 8GB 3G)

Cannot wait for my faster iPhone 4 this week!

B

I have the same problem....It takes FOREVER

I can't even. 8 hours anymore. Apple inplementation if multitasking must drain it. Heck even when on 3.1.3 and jailbroken with backrounder my battery was better.

I remember some of the developers writing about this when they installed it.

Now that you've installed a new OS, you need to drain your battery and charge it up again. This fixed the problem for them.

Backing-Up Taking Forever

The back-up portion of the installation process is taking forever. Anyone else having the same problem? Any fixes or suggestions guys?:(

Anyone else having issues with iOS 4 on the 3G? Mine keeps crashing randomly and reboots. I didnt start from a backup on this update so I know old data isn't an issue. Glad my iPhone 4 comes thursday...

Yeah, me too except that i did not plan to get that iPhone 4. Need help!

I stoped the first backup and did as people said here. I tried to restore. Things went even worse. I got the apple screen of death for half an hour and then hard reset the phone. It came on eventually, thankfully the phone is working. I will not be going ahead with restoring or updating any more. I will wait until I get my new Iphone 4 to experience the new features. Or I will buy an android phone...

At this point I dont care If I dont get the new iPhone. I love this upgrade. I feel like a new man......

It SURE will make it easier if I DONT (damn you, if I dont), get my planned iPhone 4 on Thursday!..

Come to Pa Pa !! ! ! ! !

As soon as my mom saw the wallpaper mashed with icons, she immediately muttered, "busy busy busy busy busy." I couldn't help but laugh.

My 3G 16 Gig with 2.6 Gigs free took WELL over an hour (Going on hour 6 right now) It does eventually get past the Backup state. Mine is still currently 'Restoring iPhone applications...' Looks like it does a complete wipe, installation of iOS 4, then restore from backup. Even after my restore from backup completed it continued on with more 'restorations'. Going on 3 reboots of my phone so far

Annoying isn't it? Thinking that in a week time you are going to set the 3.1.3 again...

All my photos are low resolution after upgrading?

Both me and my son-in-law upgraded our phones now all our photos are low resolution and fuzzy. Whats up with that?

Man, it's a RAM eater on my 3g! Love the new software (although a bit on the sluggish side) but seems like the best features are for the 3gs and for iphone 4. Can't wait to get my iphone on Thursday!

Just resync your photos and it will optimize them! I freaked out also when I saw them on my phone, but ANOTHER sync and it will take care of it!

I have the redsn0w jailbreak. Tried to download the 4.0 and upgrade directly and got an error--on my iPhone was a cartoon pic of Steve Jobs saying something in Russian! iPhone was stuck in recovery mode so I'm restoring now and hopefully it will upgrade fine...

What's up with that?
It restored and loaded 4.0 just fine...

Did anyone get the cartoon pic of Steve Jobs saying something in Russian? I wonder if it was unique to the RedSn0w jailbreak (of 3.1.2) or of the 4.0 load? Gotta think the former, but it would be cool if it was the latter....

Ugh.

My update went fine.

My wife's iPod Touch 3g apparently got bricked by the software.

It keeps trying to update over and over again and fails every damn time.

Unhappy wife.

The backup of the device apparently is corrupt . Wonderful.

Now what?
