For those who are getting worse life with 5.1:
1. Did you download off iTunes or phone?
2. Setup as new? Or backup?

I installed through iTunes and setup as new and my battery is great. 4 hours standby, 35 mins use, still have 100 %.

Both me and my wife think we get considerably better battery life with 5.1. I get much better standby time - I use my phone as an alarm clock (unplugged) and it's always the same battery life when I wake up vs before.

I'm seeing much better battery life on my 4S. Gave up jailbreak for it. But I tried to do ota while jailbroken and it refused so i went to iTunes, clicked update, and it downloaded the big 800mb file instead of the 189mb ota one. It kept all of my data and apps so i didn't set up as new or restore from backup. just updated straight from iTunes. But i calibrated the battery and did a hard reset.

It's better on my side too. I get standby 1d 3h and 2h usage - 66% now.
Updated over the PC without clean install or battery fully drained. Just charged till 100%.

Over the air update worked for me. Id assume this is how apple tested it to work. Woke up today.

7hrs usage
1 day 17hrs standbye

26% left. Now 25%. If 10hr is left in the 20% I'm laughing. Sorry to those who are not having as much luck.

Also out yesterday lost 3% on edge.

Hats off to the programmers.

My battery was about worse yesterday then the first day

6 hours, 20 minutes usage
23 hours, 30 minutes standby

And I charged it with 7% left

So still pretty good considering I wasn't at home all day.

I think it's incredibly difficult to tell whether battery life is better or not, as with every day use it's impossible to conduct a controlled test. Add to this the fact that apple have appeared to have changed the calibration of the battery percentage meaning that it sticks on 100% for longer and the intervals between percentage points is not always consistent.
What i can say from my point of view is that my phone seems to drain less in standby, and the usage time is less because of this.
I'm just going to turn off the battery percentage and stop worrying about it!

Might I actually be able to achieve the 200 hours of standby claimed initially?

As you can see it's been about 30 MORE minutes and it's STILL at 100% battery (10h 50m standby)

*points and screams* SORCERY!!!

Someone lynch him!

(I wish my battery was so outstanding :( )

MUCH worse after updating to 5.1

My iPhone 4S has been sitting next to me unused for 2 hours, and battery strength has declined from 100% to 70% in that time. I did not have this problem before updating. I've tried turning some features off, but I have an iPhone to monitor my e-mail, so really, it's worthless to me without a steady stream of e-mail, and unusable as is since the battery won't last but a few hours now.

Count me as one with significant improvement under 5.1

OTA update, no changes to config. Before update, would consistently be in the 20% range at the end of a day. Now I'm above 50% at the end of the day. Feels like my old iPhone 4 did under iOS 4.x so I'm delighted.

After my first day of having really bad battery life, it seems to be about normal (about 4 hours usage/1 day of standby). Really wish I could get more usage time, but oh well, I play too many games I guess!

Took off charger yesterday at 8:00 AM. Am at 64% at 3:45 on Sunday afternoon traveling with GPS going and just had 40 minute conversation. This is crazy better!

My 4 is now at 63% with 5hours 11 minutes of usage and 1 day 17 hours of standby. I dig 5.1. My battery is a lot better.:)

Well another day, and a tremendous improvement. I got 5hrs use and 1 day 2hrs standy with 32% battery remaining. None of the use was with playing music, all of it was phonecalls, pictures, internet or texting.

here's mine since update
